Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

The schedule still hasn't been released, but it is clear that the 2 remaining opponents will either be Penn State or Air Force on 1/3+4 OR Maine will split up the dates and play single games against two of Bentley, Sacred Heart and Niagara. BC, MC, Lowell (2) and Cornell are the only other teams with unknown NC games and all are very unlikely to play a game vs Maine.

Air Force will be in Dartmouth the prior weekend playing the Ledyard Classic and will be in West Point on 1/10+11. A stopover in Maine would seem to fit perfectly since the Academy will be on break all that time.
Penn State is playing in the Pittsburgh tournament the previous weekend and are hosting Minnesota 1/11+12 so they could squeeze in a trip to Maine.
Lowell is believed to be playing at Penn State in November which eliminates them.

However, what works out perfectly is:
Maine vs 2 AHA opponents other than Air Force; USAF plays 2 with Penn State, BC or MC plays 1 with Penn State and the other plays Cornell. That would leave AIC and one other AHA team with the only remaining OOC game in the country.

There are still scenarios out there where Maine gets Penn State for two but it isn't as likely :(

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

Tim may not have liked "schmoozing" for money (most people probably don't), but he was successful at it.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

Tim will be coaching two very good players in Greer and Dudek at Kimball Union. I don't know about Greer but Maine recruited Dudek very hard. In the end, Maine couldn't match BC offerings and Dudek committed to BC. Greer committed to Penn State.

Also Bird and Wood are transfers from St. John's in Mass. They are Brown recruits.

TIMMAY's coached some good players at Maine too. A lot of them underperformed. Don't expect to see much different in his new gig. Defense will be told not to hit, just retreat, retreat, retreat, poke at the puck with the stick. Offense, if you don't have advantage, just dunmp the puck in and retreat, retreat, retreat. Don't take any chances at producing something, caution is the number one priority.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

I will be so disappointed if the schedule comes out and it is Air Force or a split with two of Niagara, Sacred Heart or Bentley.

Air Force and Niagara would probably be good opponents in terms of the PW.

I wouldn't mind seeing Maine playing either, or both, while climbing the hill back to respectability. Both of those teams have been relevant lately, while Penn State is still very questionable in that regard.

Article from the BDN. To me, the most telling quote is: “I’m going to help them raise money for a new rink and fitness center. I guess all that fundraising that I didn’t really want to do at Maine may help me now,” quipped Whitehead.

I have to wonder if Maine can reasonably expect Tim to help it recruit..?

Given human nature, that doesn't seem likely to me.

Like I said before look for this NEW Maine ERA to be looking everywhere's and you can bet that Red has contacts like Walsh & Standbrook, your quite right in that I won't expect too much from TW,as we all know you can get accustomed to that approach from him...no matter what he says...he's bitter and in a lot of ways. My last .02 on Mr. Whitehead...it's a NEW Time for Maine Hockey and final a breath of fresh air from what is has been.

Totally random, but I will be in Orono in a few weeks, needing a few beers and food. Google reveals Bear Brew and Woodman's. Any thoughts, alternatives are appreciated. Thanks.

And Pepino's, if it's still there. Go with the green sauce.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

I'm surprised Whitehead took a prep school job. No way he is going to make the $150K someone mentioned before. I was actually expecting to see his name mentioned with the Huntsville opening or take a job at a D3 school. I never thought a hockey coach could be a full time job at a prep school.

It won't be his only job. He will also be working in Development for KUA which will require him to do more fundraising. His wife will be teaching math at the school and I'm sure both kids will be attending. What is tuition now at KUA? I know at NYA it is $26K so free (or reduced) tuition is a nice perk. I would guess that between him coaching and working in Development, his wife teaching and tuition for the kids the total compensation will be north of $200K.

Fixed you post... though I hear they are working towards having some residence halls in the near future. ..

Eta: kua is $50k for a boarding student and $30k for a day student
