Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Unless one of us wins Powerball there won't be any money to renovate or rebuild Alfond Arena. Harold is dead and the school has managed to ostracize Stephen and Tabitha. The endowment fund for hockey barely managed 200K in the first year. The school is looking at tens of millions in shortfalls over the next decade. So put any grand visions away.

The recruiting situation is getting better. Just look at the NHL draft picks expected to show up in Orono. Next season is going to be tough but I do expect to see this team return to relevance for 2017-18 - just about the time Maine is preparing to host in Portland. I think Red gets this team into position to win and them hands the reigns over to Ben Guite.

The big question for me is how much support will the program still have by then?

Stop being a crusty old Mainer. I know that planning for the future is a foreign subject for most Mainers......but fundraising for facilities is a process. No one gave a rats *ss about basketball or the Pit (aptly named!).

Get right on it then, let me know when you get a couple of bucks towards that new arena

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Both Hutton and Shore were Whitehead recruits, and he was able to bring in a few elite players, as many of us have said, based partly on the coat-tails/previous greatness of you know who. My point is, RG has yet to bring in any player of their ilk.
I'm thinking Robbins might be his first high profile player. Might not be as good as Hutton or Shore but he looks to be a pretty good player

Arent the "draft picks" coming in 6th and 7th riund guys? Can't expect much out of that. Wake me up when there's a 2nd rounder on the way (Gus, Shore, Howard, Bishop).

The endowment fund you're talking about, is that the thing they announced a few years ago? Where someone would match up to $5 million or something?

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Chase Pearson was selected in the 5th round, Holway in the 6th and Shea in the 7th. Drawing a blank on who the 4th draft pick is?

I think Nyquist was a 4th round pick by Detroit.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

You're right Gus was a steal by Detroit coming out of that Swedish pipeline.

I'm still not getting my hopes up.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

It doesn't matter how good the team is, kids from south of Lewiston do not want to come to Orono
Plenty of other area's to recruit...Western Canada needs to be looked at again/Quebec has many-many solid players and has been known to have Goaltenders that can play...and there's always Michigan/Minnesota & Massachusetts...the 3 M's in hockey from years ago. Recruiting has changed big time...not just the Elite 8-10 teams getting the stud players, now you can say at least 20-25 teams have legit shots at top players...just the hard fact is Maine has dropped off the Hockey map in terms of playing for Hardware...use to be Maine was always mentioned in the Top 20...Top 4 or 5 in Hockey East and always a sleeper to surprise most and be in the running for a spot in the Frozen 4's....not anymore though, they have dropped(imo) from being in the top 25 to being in the lower 15 of College Hockey's 60 Div.1 schools. We can go over it and go over it, but it's a MESS from top to bottom.

My hopes have gone down the drain the last 2 years/counting this season in progress...but it seems Organizations like Detroit have the knack to pick gems/sleepers from the 4th round to the 7th round...at least we can hope that "IF" the Wings pick a player that they see something worth the pick, as they are frugal with there picks. A player like Nyquist or Jimmy Howard or a Paul Karyia are hard to find and come every 10-15-20 years.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Say what you want about Pierre doing the games (Shawn Gendron?), NBC is certainly not cheaping out and sending the B team this weekend.

The game is on TSN in Canada. Mike Schutte just posted a picture of himself watching the game, talking about how he has missed the games and the experiences at UM. I'm lobbying him to bring the family back to Alfond next season. I do not think it can be overstated how much this program can benefit by reconnecting with alumni of the program. Aside from the donations there are tangible benefits to having those guys at games and around the rink.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

The speed difference between ND and Maine is a joke.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Another game another loss. They try, they play Reds game, they just don't have the talent to compete. Matty is the only bright spot tonight.

Tomorrow it will be a blow out

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Yep, its what bad teams do. They hang around, but in crunchtime(3rd period), their lack of talent, shines thru and they lose.

Matty and Robbins are the only 2 guys who stood out. Shots on goal 40 something for ND and 20 for maine.

I only saw about half of the game so take this for what it's worth, but I thought Hamilton played pretty well too. DiPauli was flying all over the place and Hamilton seemed like the only one that could keep him in check IMO. He had a couple nice moments where he slowed or stopped DiPauli altogether.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Matt played another outstanding game. 42 more saves I believe. He never saw the game winner and never had a chance on Lucia's power play tally.

Robbins was the lone forward who consistently got chances. Byron was defended well. I feel horrible for Cam Brown. If the cost wouldn't be prohibitive I'd love to see the whole team go to the funeral with him.

Hamilton had a good game and Schurhamer had his moments. Unfortunately Maine does not have enough players who consistently string those moments together to accomplish much more than putting on a good show for a period or two. I hear it from players after every game. "We have to play like that for 60 minutes." They just can't.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

Penalty's killed Maine last night, they played as well and as hard as could be expected from this group...goaltending kept them in the game...speed factor was key for Notre Dame...but Maine put in some tough physical play that I don't think ND expected...still missing the net on shots...didn't count but figure at least 25 shots wide and high. They just don't have the clutch finisher, Robbins did play well and that bodes well for next season(*awful to think that way with the season still going)...and Bryon is a weapon but ND and all teams keep an eye on him and give him little room to function.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

I can't imagine tonights game is even worth watching. Expended a lot of energy trying to keep up. Matty will have to keep the score under 2 for Maine to have a chance as they generated little offense last night. I should be used to this team by now but its so frustrating to watch.

Re: Maine Black Bears - Return to the Glory Years or On to Oblivion?

What's to get frustrated with? As much as I hate the saying, it is what it is. They are, say we shall, "undertalented". Not much can be done until they get more speed and more snipers on board. Simple as that. Matt played well but he is not Chris Terreri, capable of stealing games. Patience is key until we get some real hockey players in Orono.
