Maine Black Bears 2026 Offseason: Missing Out on Mistlebacher

Saw the Mariners on my flight to Pittsburgh. They are big boys; could be the tallest median height team I’ve ever seen
I'm still on the fence regarding team size being a deciding factor. Seen a bunch of itty-bitty BC teams skate circles around beefy teams, and have seen beefy teams negate speed here and there.

Red liked brawn, and we all saw how that worked out. Looks like Barr prefers a balance of the two factors, and that's worked out better, overall.

At the end of the day, if the refs don't call interference, it's good to be bigger, and if they do, it's better to be faster.

If HE actually had consistent officiating, every program would know which way to lean.

Yeah but Barr wants to play a heavy offensive game, dump in and forecheck grind the boards. Cant do that with smaller guys.
Its a bit confusing to me in that he seems to have wanted D guys on the more mobil side of things. Which is fine but you have to control that net front.
Around D1 the avg team is closer to 6' and 180 to 190 now. Im not a fan of being in that average by having half smaller guys and half 6'4+.
Barr is in a tough spot, this next season will determine what his head coaching ability is.

Was this a numbers crunch from a transfer portal addition or are we actually getting the rug pulled out from under us by Lowell? Either way, neither top forward recruit making it to Orono is concerning.
Probably was asked to wait a year and he probably didn't want to wait another year. I don't blame him honestly.

If that is the case Barr's gotta own that one. Not sure how anyone can objectively look at Voronin on tape and see his underlying numbers and think you can risk pushing him a year without him going to another program. With how freely players can move around these days you can't really use that strategy with talented players anymore.

Cory Larose announced as part of the 2026 UMaine Sports Hall of Fame class. Second player from the 98/99 team to get inducted (Steve Kariya was the first).

One of my favorite players from that era.
