Maine Black Bears 2026 Offseason: Missing Out on Mistlebacher

umbagog, umbazooksus, meduxnekeag, souadabscook among my favorites
Ambajesus is pretty tough to beat, too, as far as the name goes.

My uncle from Millinocket had a camp there. Wasn't a great place to fish, but one time I took my 7 YO cousin out in the middle of the pond to attempt to catch a stray togue.

Well, fuck me running, that kid hauled in a 28" pickerel.

In 30' of water.

On a nightcrawler...

He's over 40 now, and still has that old photo on his wall.

I miss fishing in Maine more than I miss hockey, probably, and that's really saying something.

that has got to be the biggest pickerel ever caught 🤣

I feel like this would increase the fatigue and risk of injury for teams trying to make a deep run into the playoffs. I think the regular season schedule is perfect the way it is.
Plenty of other competitive leagues have a much more taxing schedule..

But also yes it would be great if we could add 1.5 months to the season too- just because more hockey = awesome

Might have been a state record 🎣.
Or, part of the culture, a fishing story worth telling just gets better everytime its told as details get improved. 😉
Hell, if I had caught the damn thing, it woulda been 31" by now!

(OK, just had to look it up; the Maine record is an astonishing 7 lb, 2 oz. hog from Balch Lake in 2007. They didn't list its length, but the tables have it at nearly a yard long. Andy's likely went around 4 and a half or so, easily the biggest I've seen, and I've caught a whole bunch of Maine pickerel.)

All pike/pickerel species are so fun to catch. They fight like hell! They are like freshwater barracuda.

My older cousin makes musky lures and he caught a frickin MONSTER on his own lure. Did not see it in person but the picture he showed me was epic.

Does he fish the introduced musky way up in The County?

Breazeale and Renwick are coming to Portland Monday/Tuesday for a playoff series for those in Southern Maine wanting to see some alums play. Tickets allegedly 15 bucks across the board because the Mariners can't give them away.

Ohio State is playing two game sets at RPI, Union, and Sacred Heart this season.

Seems like a list Maine could figure out its way onto.
Alfond Arena is one of the most inhospitable places for visiting teams, the cost is significant (not that that matters for a BTHC team) and you run a substantial risk of losing two road games. Plus Maine may not want to make the return trip to Columbus for some reason. And don't forget that these things are planned out several years in advance, so if something were in the works we wouldn't see it until 28/29 or something.

Also, the Buckeyes might still hold a grudge. It's been over three decades; get over it ;)

Renewed the season tickets this morning. Three in the lower bowl was $1138 + $15 fees (a 23% increase). That works out to $22.35 for 17 games, $21.07 for 18 or $19.96 for 19 games. 25/26 was 17, 24/25 was 19.
