Maine Black Bears 2026 Offseason: Missing Out on Mistlebacher

Poor goaltending cost the team any chance for NCAA Tournament spot. 48th in goaltending no chance at being successful. Maine offense averaged 3.31 goals per game. Barr can blame Poirier and Marques all he wants but it was Rousseau and Boija
Goaltending is wildly irrelevant to the topic of Marques choosing to leave for a program that will be road tripping across New England all winter.

“Culture” is another code word for fit. I trust Barr to figure it out. No reason not to.

As far as Poirier goes, if he was a pill and they cant afford him anyway, hasta la vista. He wouldve been great on the 2024-25 team because that one had the leaders to bring him up a level. This one did not. Ideally, you need both. But if the $$s an issue PLUS he’s a passenger not a driver for culture, then I get why Maine cant get it done

Miguel Marques has transferred to Northeastern.
It was fairly obvious Miguel wasnt energized playing at maine, too bad that Barr couldnt bring him around, the kid has a ton of potential. Sucks he is staying in conference.
Im worried this was an indicator or was it one off. If we hear the same whining from Barr next year about players work ethic and culture problems etc then we got a big problem.

Marques never fit on this team as a player. Not looking at stats but watched every game and he had to lead the team in turnovers. Didn’t like making the simple plays, tried to dangle through and it maybe worked a couple times.

No idea how to post twitter links these days but this suggests Poirier has not technically entered but is still expected to, and also mentions that he had hip surgery recently for all the conspiracy theorists out there.

I had mentioned back in early March that he was headed for hip surgery this offseason. Sounded like surgery would help, but from what I heard his hip issues go deeper and might be something he has to manage for his whole playing career which is unfortunate. Hopefully it doesn't diminish his offensive skills and he's able to get back to full health, wherever he ends up.

Someone mentioned a fight between porier and lepinski. If they have to choose between one or the other they need size big time. If you’ve ever been near the team with skates on they were a d3 team of 10-15 years ago, all little guys. Watching the frozen four, they were all big teams. National title or bust every year, if they’re going to be small they have to be dogs like Fowler and Russel. Your whole team can’t be 5’8” and expect results in the playoffs.

If Lipinski sticks around (which it looks like he might) and plays more to his size he could be the biggest surprise on the team next year. The opportunity is there for him to get top-6 minutes and with his skills in the dot (top-5 nationally last year) he should see ice time in all situations. Just needs to stay out of Barr's doghouse and play with more consistency game-to-game.
