Maine Black Bears 2020: The Hunt For Red October

Maine can clinch a playoff spot with a UNH loss to Lowell. A UConn win over UMass also keeps second place within reach. However, if Lowell and UConn both get a win or a tie in their games, they pass Maine and knock the Bears down to 5th in Hockey East. So if your priority is just getting Maine into the playoffs, go Lowell! If your priority is getting Maine to second overall (a long shot to be sure) then go UConn! If your priority is getting Maine home ice, then go UNH and UMass!

Go UNH and UMASS it is, then.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2020: The Hunt For Red October

Maine was so close to having both games go their way, only for the teams they need to win to choke leads in the final two minutes. UMass loses to UConn, and UNH ties Lowell. Maine is in fifth.

Could Umass be in pairwise trouble if they somehow choke in Hockey East quarters? There is a very good chance that will be a tough series for them.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2020: The Hunt For Red October

That couldn't have gone worse. Not only do both UConn and Lowell pass Maine, but the tie by UNH means the Black Bears don't even clinch a playoff spot.

It didn’t go well for Hockey East, but the Northeastern loss and UML tie looks like it helped them in the PairWise. Back in the 15th spot. Need a win tomorrow.

There's a chance. It all depends on who they're paired with in the QF. They still haven't clinched home ice yet, so they have work to do regardless.

Here's a hot take for everyone: Has UConn proven that they aren't this "inferior team" that all their opponents "should have beat", at least in the second half?

It could work out very well for the conference, with Northeastern, Maine and Lowell all in the top 15 by night's end, depending on results out west.

They're still in the bottom half of the KRACH.

Well they have some very bad non conference results but their play down the stretch has been impressive.

Re: Maine Black Bears 2020: The Hunt For Red October

It looks like Maine will finish the night 13 (if UAA wins or ties) or 14 (Alaska wins) in the pairwise.

I still have them in Albany with #3 Cornell, #8 Clarkson and #9 UMass.

That might be a favorable regional, Cornell and Clarkson have the 41st and 43rd SOS respectively, so they might be more vulnerable than their seeds and records appear.

Per PlayoffStatus, it looks like Maine currently is sitting with a 43% chance of making the NCAA tourney.

Tomorrow will be the first opportunity I'll get to see them live this season (sadly the only time I'm home in Maine these days is around the holidays when they don't play), so really hoping they can show the same road mentality they did against BC.

I'm laughing at the regional talk.
