Maine Black Bears, 2010-2011, Redemption or FORE, I say......

Re: Maine Black Bears, 2010-2011, Redemption or FORE, I say......

I think people have been saying this the past couple of years. Then he was given an extension.

Exactly. "Just one more year"........"next year is our year".......blah blah blah. Thousands of Red Sox fans said the same thing for DECADES......many were born and many died before they ever won anything again.

If only we could catch a break or a "bounce" or stop running into "hot goalies" or not have our "travel plans changed" when going to road games or if we could just get a new HEAD COACH.........

Re: Maine Black Bears, 2010-2011, Redemption or FORE, I say......

Chris Imes was heads and tails better than anyone on this team and he had enough heart and will to lead a team to the promised land. Not sure who on this team you'd compare him too. That team had good goaltending also

Good point. There are no comparsions to the 95 NCAA team. That team was a classic example of a good team being builit from the GOAL out. Start with Allison, add Imes, Tory, MacIsaac, Rodrigues, and White on D and spalsh in some gritty, hard nosed forwards like Shermerhorn, Wansborough, Cardinal, Lovell, Conlan, Purdie, etc. and you had good team. NO comparison to this team. On most nights, this year's Maine team look like they are skating five forwards.

Re: Maine Black Bears, 2010-2011, Redemption or FORE, I say......

I look back at Maine's run in the early/mid 90's and, to me anyways, a lot of their success was due to the fact that top recruits had really two choices if they wanted to play in the east: Maine and BU. With BC's rise and UNH's consistency, it gives kids more options and Maine doesn't appeal to most as it used to. I look at a guy like Cal Ingraham, for example, and think with his size, speed, etc, he would have been coveted by Jerry York if he were at BC back then. I just think other programs have caught up and passed them by and don't see what Maine can do to grab it back.

That might become a problem for UMaine, but I really don't think it's a very big part of what is wrong right now. We do have a goalie problem, but other than that our team has plenty of talent to play with any other team in the country. I know that BC probably wasn't at their best at the Alfond, but the Maine players absolutely dominated them all throughout the game. Clearly, our guys can play, but playing effectively as a team is another issue entirely and has more to do with the game plan and coaching than with the talent level. We've got the talent in Orono right now, but they just don't make a team committment to defense first and focus on that all game long, and our coach seems powerless to direct them for long in a direction that will keep them winning.

The teams' line changes suck as well.........how can you dominate if you are on the ice for long stretches. Maybe Timmy needs a whistle like Umile..........defense lapses seem to happen happen then ..............

This is a classic example of why I do not post anymore! #1 Walrus took my post out of context. As I was comparing the talent up front! Others indicated we did not have the same type of talent level at the forward position of Shawn teams!

#2 Your post is LOL funny when you mention defense and Jacque Rodrique! He was a specialist who almost exclusively saw the blueline on the power play, and then played wing on the 4th line! Conlan a hard nosed forward? Wayne could skate, but so can Mangene!

You mentioned 6 forwards and if you take this years top 6, (Gus, House, Flynn, Abbott, Dee, Diamond) while not as gritty they certainly have more talent. On D, Imes and Tory were elite, the others were solid d-men along the lines of a Van Dyk, and Dimmen. In goal Allison was head and shoulders above what we have witnessed to date. But they played team defense, we have not done that consistently this year, and with inconsistent goaltending it kills!

Here's Kyle Beattie's quote on the game "It's a cruel and twisted game that can be brutal on you". How true. By the way, this kid is developing before our eyes. Two goals this weekend. Nyquist had no comment after the game. I feel really bad for him.

So this year's team has more talent than that one, at least at forward. I'd pretty much agree based on pure skill and tools levels. And yet that team won 30 games, maybe the best NCAA tournament game ever, and almost a national championship. This one will be lucky to win a quarterfinal round in the HE tourney. Besides goaltending, what makes the difference?

What managed to take that group of relatively average forwards and turn them into a powerhouse of a machine?

You answered your own question. Goal tending. In addition, the bounce of the puck in hockey is huge. As the saying goes, "there are times when it is far better to be lucky than good". In addition, it's difficult to make comparisons with teams in the past because game situations and the opposition is totally different.

Whatever it is.......it's definitely not the coach!

I can't see how you completely blame Whitehead. He had you guys in 4 Frozen Fours and 2 title games, right? Maine seemed to take a jump forward last year and ended up one OT goal from the NCAAs. You guys have a Hobey finalist who is clearly underachieving this year, too. Can't be 100% on Timmay.

Nyquist has had one good weekend all season and this one was it. Have fun in Detroit, we'll hardly miss ya!

The guy is extremly talented.......but this season, in THIS system........he has been ineffective.

I just said that.......IT'S NOT THE COACH!!! No one wants to come to Maine anymore.......it's too far away from civilization. Plus Conte, Whittemore, Agganis, etc are MUCH bertter than Alfond......especially the fan support!

Great post. Tim is on the hook for poor recruiting for a couple of years. The team is still trying to recover from that.

I apologize:rolleyes:. Rodrique reminds me of ONeil,

Abbot is quoted in the paper, we outplayed them, UNH scored 5 goals and Maine 4, tell me how Maine out played them?. I could see that comment if it was 1 -0 game and Maine shelled the goalie but got nothing by. That wasn't the case at all

Not so much you, but there are people on this thread who want to throw all the blame on Whitehead. That's not fair and not even true.

I honestly don't know if, say, Jimmy Howard was a Walsh or Whitehead recruit, etc, you guys know that much better than me. I do know that you guys have been able to get guys like Nyquist, House, O'Neill, Bishop, and others to come up there. They aren't the top flight names Maine has had in the past, but to me, it seems like Whitehead is doing a good job with what he has. I think the local competition is much better now and that is Maine's biggest culprit.
