Re: Maine Black Bears, 2010-2011, Redemption or FORE, I say......
By deep doo doo, I'm talking about like 10 wins at best.

If Nyquist bolts after this year it's safe to say Maine is going to be in deep doo doo next year...
you didn't think that when Cornell went down to his knees trying to keep a flying puck in at the blue line was one of the stupidest? The second he went down and I saw DaCosta closing in, and heading to the neutral zone, I "knew" it was a goal.
and gosh, gee whizz, I sure am glad that O'Connor did not play, I would have hated to see any maine defensemen playing rough and hitting anyone. silly bully merrimack warriors.
I like how Timmy was trying something new... a bazillion attempted touch passes and actual team play... but NOW is not the time to start something new... way too many blind touch passes and way too many turnovers all over the ice.
I really think that it is just plain "the end of an era"
Say thanks tomorrow to Nyquist, it has been a pleasure watching him
the best part of MY night was seeing BobF's face when he saw ME in a Maine jersey, NOT a Merrimack jersey. heh heh heh.
I doubt Abbott comes back. He's one of the more desirable college free agents out there and has been scouted a ton this year he'll be gone.Even if Nyquist leaves, they're returning 3 proven, impact scorers (Abbott, Flynn, Diamond) and I fully anticipate breakout years from Beattie and Swavely.

I'm a frustrated and I'm not very optimistic, but are you outside of your mind? 07/08 was the most horrendous trainwreck I've ever seen for Maine offensively. Our leading scorer had 10 goals. The team's GPG was 2.26, which would put them in a tie for 2nd to last in the conference this year. And that team won 13 games.
Even if Nyquist leaves, they're returning 3 proven, impact scorers (Abbott, Flynn, Diamond) and I fully anticipate breakout years from Beattie and Swavely. Just trust me with Swaves. Guys like Mangene (who are critical puzzle pieces, albeit not the most gifted natural finisher on the team) usually discover productivity as an upperclassman.
I'm perfectly comfortable with the more veteran version of those 6 guys manning the top 2 lines next year in some combination. And you just never know what you'll get behind them. Amestoy is spunky, tenacious, and you can't coach his kind of speed...if Anthoine takes his skating to the next level, he has an awesome shot to compliment his board banging style. So you never know what you're going to get.
To say this team is going to be markedly worse than 07/08 because Nyquist is gone is a little overboard.
The goal tending crew will also have more experience and should be improved.

God I hope so! Certainly can't be worse in terms of number of soft goals!
A rational approach. Every college hockey team has turnover of players every year. That's one of the reasons college hockey is so exciting. The goal tending crew will also have more experience and should be improved.
I don't doubt this at all. Hopefully you are wrong, but if it does come true, I retract everything about next year's team being at least competitive. Losing Abbott and Nyquist next year, Maine will be worse off than a one legged man is an ### kicking contest.
Perhaps more infuriating will be a certain coach who will use them both leaving early as an excuse until 2014.
Keep in mind that without Nyquist setting them up with easy tap ins, some of those guys' numbers are likely to go down. Maine may have one good line next year, but the next 3 lines are going to be pretty weak in my estimation. Throw in shaky goaltending & D and a "challenged" coach and you may be in trouble. Keep in mind as well that a lot of Maine's wins this year were against some teams who were really rebuilding this year and those W's are likely not going to be as easy to come by next year.
