MAC hockey conference...

Is it just a matter of time before this happens? Will it ever happen?

Western Michigan
Bowling Green
Miami
UMass

Buffalo?
NIU?

Would they be forced to play hockey in the MAC if there were six teams that had hockey, like the Big Ten? Or could/would they play in separate conferences?

MAC doesn't have the stature or the balls to even attempt to "force" this issue, even IF (and it's a BIG 'IF') two more of their current members jumped in to the D1 mix.

More importanly, UMass-Lowell is NOT the same UMass that is in the MAC.

So there are only 3 MAC teams that play hockey. They need 3 more to make a conference.

It's far more likely that the GLIAC would form a conference, since 4 of those teams play hockey, and one of them used to. And a GLIAC hockey conference would be pretty historic, since there are 7 national championships to 1 in the MAC.

and we know that's not going to happen any time soon.

Where does OP mention Lowell? UMASS-Amherst aka the Minutemen of Hockey East are in the MAC as an affiliate member for football. On the other hand, their official NCAA affiliation is with Atlantic-10 so you are kind of right in that they aren't a full MAC member.

So many possibilities for some HE or future HE teams.

Umass is in the MAC for football... and everyone has wanted them out of Hockey East forever. So this is as logical as it comes. BUT, what happens when UMass drops their football program (as they should)?

Uconn is essentially in the MAC starting next year for football (AAC will be on par with MAC football after the departures). They could move to the MAC for football and start up a hockey conference with the 6 minimum with these two New England schools. Then their hockey team might actually win more than 10 games a season in a conference like this.

oops, I forgot that ther is both UMass and UMass lowell playing hockey. Sorry about the mistake.

FWIW, Ohio and Kent have both had D1 hockey teams in the past and both were in the CCHA. It is more likely that the CCHA would reform in some manner if more area schools added hockey as opposed to the MAC adding hockey as a sport. LSSU, NMU, WMU, Ferris, BG, Miami, Ohio, Kent would be a good start.
