LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

I really like the throwback jerseys the Lakers are wearing this weekend. A nice way to honor the earliest teams on the 50th anniversary celebration. I also love the new "Wall of Champions" at the north end of the the arena.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

What a game, man. Lake Superior State's offense intended to make a statement after ranking 10th in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association in scoring last season.

The Lakers came through loud and clear with Friday's 6-1 non-conference victory over Michigan State in front of a Great Lake State Weekend crowd of nearly 2,800 fans. The Lakers enjoyed their best offensive production since edging Union 6-5 in overtime on Oct. 18, 2013.

LSSU (1-0) broke open a 1-1 game with five unanswered goals, including three in the third period. Six different players scored goals for the Lakers, and sophomore defenseman Owen Headrick led LSSU in points with one goal and three assists. Brayden Gelsinger (1-2—3), Mitch Hults (0-3—3) and Kris Bindulis (1-1—2) all had a multiple-point game.

LSSU goaltender Gordie Defiel played nearly 55 scoreless minutes after giving up a goal early in the first period. He finished with 19 saves, including only three in the second period. The Lakers out-shot Michigan State, 34-20.

Gage Torrel gave LSSU a 1-0 lead with an even-strength goal at 2:43 of the opening period, and MSU's Villiam Haag tied it, 1-1, with a power-play goal at 5:21. LSSU's J.T. Henke regained the Lakers' one-goal lead with an even-strength goal at 18:43 of the first period.

Laker Max Humitz scored a power-play goal at 13:45 of the second period, enabling the Lakers to carry a 3-1 lead into the third.

During the final period, Gelsinger made it 4-1 with a power-play goal at 3:43, and Bindulis followed with a 5-on-5 goal at 5:37. Headrick finished off the scoring with a power-play goal at 9:35.

The Lakers were 3-for-11 with the man advantage, while MSU was 1-for-6.

LSSU and MSU meet in Game 2 of the series at 6:07 p.m. Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena. MSU's Rhett Holland received a game disqualification in the third period and will not be eligible to play Saturday.

During first intermission Saturday, LSSU will recognize its LSSU Athletic Hall of Fame 2016 inductees: Kris Dunbar, Randy Sieler, Bruce Hoffort and the 1975-76 LSSU men's basketball team.

Ringy Dingy!

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

I have to say that that was one of the best Laker teams to watch in years. Yes, there were still mistakes and they will learn from those, but the fire they seemed to have was great. Shooting at the net every chance, finishing checks and getting to the puck were MUCH better than in years past. This team will continue to improve and I hope we see the excitement grow. It was also the best student crowd I have ever seen, they were loud and having fun. Nice to have that "7th man". Great idea moving the student section.
Hope we have the same type of game tonight!

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

I would like to see this Lakers team play without all the ticke tack calls from the officials. Neither team should be happy with way the game was called. The Lakers did survive though and the special teams got a ton of experience going forward.

Just wait until December.

Great way to start the season, my brother was in the Soo and attended both games, said there was a great atmosphere in Taffy. I know Michigan State isn't supposed to be very good by their standards so I caution against running too wild with expectations based on this but still, any time you can beat a Big Ten school of 47,000 kids with comparatively endless means compared to our program's it is something to be proud of, and it's been quite a while since the Lakers put up 13 goals in a weekend. Great job Lakers, hope to see you build on this going forward!

Someone made the same comment to me after the game. I.e. It's been a long time since the Lakers scored 13 goals on a weekend.

From the LSSU post-game press release: Last 7 goal game: 1/2/09 vs Robert Morris. Last 12 goal or better series: 11/4-5/2005 vs WMU (10-0 and 3-1).

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

The good ship Laker had a great weekend, man, and head coach Damon Whitten is steering them in the right direction.

Here is a recap of the weekend from Randy Russon of www.hockeynewsnorth.com and www.saultthisweek.com

http://www.hockeynewsnorth.com/ncaa/headrick-sparks-laker-victory/

Lake Superior State Lakers flashed a new-look offense en route to a 6-1, opening-night win over the Michigan State Spartans before a Friday crowd of close to 2,800 at Taffy Abel Arena.

After scoring the fewest goals among any team in the 10-member Western Collegiate Hockey Association in 2015-2016, the offensive splurge served as a nice welcome sign to the 2016-2017 campaign for Lake State.

The six goals were the most the Lakers have scored in a single game since October of 2013.

In Friday’s 6-1 non-conference romp over Michigan State, sophomore defenseman Owen Headrick sparked the Lakers with a goal and two assists. The Garden River First Nation product is a graduate of the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League.

Another defenseman, freshman Kris Bindulis — formerly of the Soo Eagles juniors — had a goal and an assist for Lake State.

In front of a nearly capacity crowd inside Taffy Abel Arena on the final night of Great Lake State Weekend, Lake Superior State defeated Michigan State 7-3, to claim the series sweep. LSSU scored four goals in the first period Saturday (Oct. 15) to take a 4-0 lead into the break, tallied two in the second period and finished with a goal late in the third.

The Lakers improved to 2-0 with the victories and combined for 13 goals in the series, the most by a Lakers team since outscoring Western Michigan 13-1 in November 2005. Saturday's seven goals were also the most by the Lakers since defeating Robert Morris 7-6 on Jan. 2, 2009.

Freshman Max Humitz opened the scoring 6:26 into the first for the Lakers with a power play goal and the second goal in just his second collegiate game. Senior captain Gus Correale then scored an even strength goal just over mid-way thru the first and Gage Torrel's even-strength marker put the Lakers ahead 3-0, just 40 seconds later.

Correale's second goal, a shorthanded tally, came two minutes after Torrel and gave the Lakers a 4-0 heading into the first intermission. The shorthanded strike by Correale, assisted by Diego Cuglietta and freshman Collin Saccoman, would eventually record as the game winner.

20 minutes of action and 13 shots were all freshman goaltender John Lethemon would see after getting the start for the Spartans in game two. Lethemon, making his collegiate debut, saved just nine shots in recording the loss and was replaced by junior Ed Minney to start the second period. Minney finished the game by allowing three goals on 17 shots.

The Spartans tallied two goals within 1:18 of each other to cut into the Lakers lead 4-2, early in the second period with even-strength tallies from Logan Lambdin and Zach Osburn.

LSSU responded with a pair of goals to go up 6-2 with an even strength goal by Anthony Nellis and a power-play marker by Mitch Hults. The goal for Nellis was his second point on the night and third for the weekend. Hults' tally capped a four-point weekend for the Stoughton, Wis., native after tallying three assists in Friday's 6-1 victory.

MSU tallied their third and final goal with 18 seconds left in the second period to head to the second intermission trailing 6-3. Gordon Defiel started his second consecutive game in net and made 30 saves while the Spartans outshot the Lakers 33-30.

J.T. Henke's goal with 2:22 left in the final frame drove home the final nail and wrapped up a three point night for the junior and a four point weekend.

After scoring a goal and adding two assists on Friday, Garden River, Ont., native Owen Headrick dished out three assists on Saturday evening and led the Lakers with six points for the weekend.

A crowd of nearly 3,500 were on hand at Taffy Abel Arena to watch the Lakers finish off the sweep of the Spartans, the first time LSSU swept their former Central Collegiate Hockey Association rivals since hosting MSU five years earlier on Oct. 14-15, 2011.

The Lakers 2-0 start to the season is their first since opening the 2013-14 season with a sweep at home over Robert Morris on Oct. 11-12, 2013.

LSSU opens Western Collegiate Hockey Association play on the road next weekend against Alabama-Huntsville. The Lakers and Chargers are slated for consecutive 7:07 p.m. CT starts on Oct. 21-22.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Feels as if we are back in the 90s with the way this team played over the weekend. The WCHA site has the video of the goals scored last night and Fridays game but there is no sound with it.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

So far, the WCHA's record against NC team has been really, really bad. At least the Lakers are 2-0 so far in NC play.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

Huntsville is going to be a tough series . They beat Ferris twice and tied Mi Tech at Tech .

I agree, UAH has a history of playing the Lakers very tough in recent years even when on paper it should have been a push over. That's why they play the game.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

I assume out of town fans noticed that the YesFM link is now working at the Lakers website and they were able to listen to the stream of the games this past weekend?

Re: LSSU Lakers 2016-17

The new USCHO poll is out for the week, and Lake State got 6 votes/points.

While it's a way off from being ranked, people noticed this weekend. Hopefully we can keep it up & get on the board.
