LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I have a question for the experts on this sight. How many of our players would have been affected by the propesed new age legislation we are hearing so much about. Thanks in advance.

It has been discussed on a recent Laker hockey show. I believe Bill Crawford said it was either 15 or 17 players. I don't remember exactly.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Recruit 20 year old players and just let them get better at a younger age playing division 1 hockey. What's next ? Teams like the Lakers bring in the players at 20 and they still beat the big ten schools and other schools of better programs and than they demand players can't be over 19 to play as freshmen. Talk about a bunch of children crying to get things their way. The big ten league has been a dull boring brand of hockey .

Thanks Section P. That's a big number. Good thing we are getting things going before the new legislation.

Bill, I'm not sure why you responded in the way you did. I get what's going on but why discourage someone who is providing so much information in a positive way. Nothing posted is negative. All the articles, links to various podcasts, interviews and the like are done extremely well.

Someone like me can come on this sight and get everything they need all at once.

And about the thread that discusses the new legislation. That's what I've been reading and got the information regarding the age of our recruits. I just wanted to know how much this new legislation would have impacted the recruiting we have recently done.

I'm glad it helps, as the good ship Laker is getting a lot more coverage and exposure on both sides of the bridge, with the resurgence of the program under head coach Damon Whitten, and I'm trying to highlight some of that, especially for LSSU Laker fans that might not know where to find it. Unlike some, I'm looking forward.

Here is the latest article by Randy Russon of www.saultthisweek.com on Laker coach seeks return to the glory days.

The new age proposal is not a done deal yet, although there are valid concerns the Big 10 will have the weight to push it through.

LakerBaker isn't attempting to just pass along information in a positive way. It's being done in a sarcastic way. I don't know if you were reading the forum much last season, but if you were then you know LakerBaker was trashing Damon Whitten for much of the season. LakerBaker must have went over the edge on that criticism because the Board Admin suspended LakerBaker for a while early this year. When LakerBaker started posting again, it was pretty much just copying and pasting (almost verbatim) info from local sports media, with a little obvious sarcasm mixed in. All this copying and pasting from LakerBaker is classic troll like behavior.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

And don't you find it a little strange that LakerBaker is his handle instead of LakerBacker.

I think all he does is trash up the joint.

Oh "Bill" let other people make up their mind, it's clear you are not as clever as you might think you are.

I understand you perceive yourself as being the den mother of this forum.

Let others make up they own mind, take your own advice, and put me on ignore, like you promote to others. I'll continue to share opinions and provide information to LSSU Laker hockey fans, as it is this forum's intent.

Much like head coach Damon Whitten, I'm looking at the present and ahead, not stuck in the past as it appears you are.

Like you, I woke up today in a free country, compete with freedom of speech.

Merry Christmas "Bill" and go Lakers.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Merry Christmas to all LSSU Laker fans!!

Check out Randy Russon's great article in www.hockeynewsnorth.com on the good ship Laker preparing for 2016 and their tournament next week in Vermont.

You can hear all games on www.yesfm.net with the Voice of the Lakers, Bill Crawford.

Ringy Dingy!

The holiday break will end for the Lake Superior State Lakers early next week as they head to Vermont for a pair of non-conference games as part of the Catamount Cup tournament.

It was back in 2001 when the Lakers won the Catamount Cup as champions of the annual four-team event.

When that is over and they begin to focus on the second half of the 2015-2016 season, the upstart Lakers will face a heavy Western Collegiate Hockey Association schedule that features 16 games — eight at home and eight on the road.

The Lakers will head into conference play in 2016 with a 4-4-4 record from 12 games (they have an overall mark of 6-10-4) which has them tied for fifth-place in the 10-team WCHA with 12 points.

Tied with Alaska-Anchorage for fifth spot, the Lakers are within two points of fourth place Northern Michigan and have two games in hand on the Wildcats

Lake Superior State will be out to try to take advantage of the home ice of Taffy Abel Arena when the WCHA schedule resumes in the New Year. The Lakers will begin 2016 with four straight games at home — January 8-9 against second-place Bowling Green and January 16-17 against aforementioned Alaska-Anchorage.

As the Lakers ice the youngest team — by far — in the WCHA, head coach Damon Whitten said he is “okay” with the team’s record thus far this 2015-2016 season.

“I like the effort we have been getting and we are definitely improving and doing better than expected for a team that was picked to finish last in the WCHA this season but we have a lot of games to play in the second half and we can’t afford to let up,” said Whitten, while guesting on the Laker Hockey Show, which airs on Sault Ste. Marie radio station ESPN 1400.

To be sure, the Lakers have been getting a lot out of their younger players.

Of the Lakers top 10 scorers, six are freshmen, two are sophomores and two are juniors. And of the two goalies who share the workload for the Lakers, one is a freshman and the other is a sophomore.

Sophomore J.T. Henke leads the Lakers in scoring with 6 goals, 6 assists, 12 points.

Then it’s junior forward Gus Correale and freshman forward Mitch Hults both at 4-5-9, freshman forward Gage Torrel at 3-6-9, freshman forward Anthony Nellis at 2-6-8, freshman defenseman Owen Headrick at 3-4-7, junior forward Alex Globke at 4-2-6, freshman forward Diego Cuglietta at 2-4-6, sophomore defenseman James Roll at 1-5-6 and freshman forward Jake Hand rounding out the top 10 scorers at 0-5-5.

Freshman goalie Nick Kossoff has a 2-3-1 record to go with a 1.99 goals against average and .920 save percentage while sophomore tender Gordon Defiel has 4-7-3, 2.78 and .916 numbers.

Ah, so you are in the vein of all great Internet trolls who break out that old, true trope when criticized, as if criticism of stupid, sarcastic speech were an attempt to squelch all speech, or if even banning speech on this forum is somehow an abrogation of speech. Man, take a gander at con-law sometime.

Merry Christmas to the vast majority of Laker fans whose reputations are damaged by the likes of LakerBaker, the Truth Squad, etc. You would think that the second year of Whitten would be a time of enjoying the advances made and the turnaround that looks like it might be happening. Do not let the post-turds wear you down.

Good luck this year, unless you're ahead of us late, in which I hope you lose everything and Gordy Defiel's optometrist is hit by a bus. :D

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Since there aren't any previews for the Catamount Cup out yet (and I'm not about to attempt to write anything,) here are some stats for the four teams in the tournament. All numbers are for overall stats, unless noted:

Team offense:
Brown - 2.50 (T-33 with UAA)
Colgate - 2.47 (T-39 with BG)

Brown - Nick Lappin - 12 7 10 17 1.42 (fun fact: Nick's Dad Peter played against LSSU in the '88 championship for St. Lawrence)
Vt- Mario Puskarish - 19 5 11 16 .84
Colgate - Tyson Spink - 17 7 8 15 .88
LSSU - J.T. Henke - 17 6 6 12 .71

Brown - Tim Ernst .896 2.93
Colgate - Charlie Finn .891 3.55

I went ahead and put the stats for Colgate on here, even though we don't play them, since tiebreakers are determined by number of goals scored. None of the teams appear to be having grand seasons and are probably looking at the Cup as a way to jump start their second half against what may be preceived as mediocre teams.

Sorry this took up so much space. My original formatting did not work well at all, making look as if it drags on forever.

From the numbers, it looks like four pretty evenly matched teams. Maybe a little home ice advantage to Vermont.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I think the Lakers have a good chance to win the tournament in Vermont. I didn't realize how weak the other teams in the Catamount Cup were until jsmithe pointed it out.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Here is another great article, by Randy Russon of www.hockeynewsnorth and www.saultthisweek.com bout the LSSU Lakers and life for third string goaltender, Aaron Davis. Great job Randy!

He is in his third season with the Lake Superior State Lakers and has appeared in just one game in his Western Collegiate Hockey Association career but junior goalie Aaron Davis continues to work hard and be a supportive teammate.

Davis, who put up good numbers over two seasons in the North American Hockey League — primarily with the reputable Coulee Region Chill organization — has to yet play in a game for the Lakers in 2015-2016 while having seen action just once in 2014-2015 after being idle in 2013-2014.

Undaunted, the 5-foot-8, 160-pound, third-string Lakers goalie remains positively realistic.

“I’m in a situation where I just have to work hard every day, earn everything I can, push the guys ahead of me,” noted Davis.

“I do what I can to help the team. There’s always a chance of something opening up and if that chance comes, I have to take advantage of the opportunity,” added Davis, who serves as the reserve goalie behind sophomore Gordon Defiel and freshman Nick Kossoff on the Lakers depth chart.

Lakers goalie coach Terry Barbeau, who is in his third go-round at Lake Superior State and has worked in a similar capacity for both the Soo Greyhounds and Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League, praised Davis for being “very positive in a tough situation.

“I have a lot of respect for him in his role with the team and how he carries himself in that role,” Barbeau said of Davis.

I can't wait to hear the Voice of the Lakers, Bill Crawford, on www.yesfm.net with the calls of the games in Vermont. I expect the Lakers, led by Damon Whitten, to come home with another trophy.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Here is the LSSU Lakers athletics preview of this week's Catamount Cup.

With the holiday season winding down and the second half of Western Collegiate Hockey Association play resuming in January, Lake Superior State travels to Burlington, Vt., for the Sheraton/TD Bank Catamount Cup Dec. 29-30 at the Gutterson Fieldhouse on the University of Vermont campus.

The Lakers (6-10-4 overall, 4-4-4 WCHA) open against the host Catamounts (5-12-2 overall, 3-5-2 Hockey East) at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday before facing Brown University in the 4 p.m. game on Wednesday. Both games will be broadcast live on 99.5 YES FM.

Sophomore forward J.T. Henke leads the Lakers in scoring through the first half of the season with six goals and six assists for 12 points.

Following Henke are junior forward Gus Correale at 4-5-9, freshman forward Mitch Hults at 4-5-9, freshman forward Gage Torrel at 3-6-9, freshman forward Anthony Nellis at 2-6-8, freshman defenseman Owen Headrick at 3-4-7, junior forward Alex Globke at 4-2-6, freshman forward Diego Cuglietta at 2-4-6 and sophomore defenseman James Roll at 1-5-6.

Torrel and Hults are tied for third in rookie league scoring, while Nellis is tied for fifth and Cuglietta is tied for ninth.

Headrick ranks eighth in league scoring among freshmen and leads all freshmen defensemen in scoring.

The Catamounts enter the matchup having lost their last two games and going a combined 3-6-1 in their last 10 games.

The tournament hosts rank 11th in Hockey East scoring with a team average of 2.11 goals per game and rank eighth defensively with a 2.84 goals-against average.

Mario Puskarich leads the Catamounts in scoring after posting five goals and 11 assists through 19 games played the season. Sophomore forward Jarrid Privitera and his brother, senior defenseman Alexx Privitera, are tied for second in points and are the only other players to reach double figures in points so far this season.

Junior goaltender Mike Santaguida has made 16 appearances in net and has produced a 4-9-2 record and a 2.70 goals against average. Santaguida also boasts a .911 saves percentage.

The Lakers captured a 5-3 victory over Vermont in the 2011 Catamount Cup. All-time, the two programs are tied at 4-4-0 overall with the Lakers holding g a 3-1-0 advantage in Burlington.

The Lakers cap the Catamount Cup with an unfamiliar foe, having faced the Brown Bears twice in the history of the programs. Both previous matchups were during similar holiday tournaments with LSSU capturing a 5-1 victory in the first meeting at the Western Michigan Hockey Classic in 1980. The last meeting between the Lakers and Bears (2-7-3 overall, 2-5-2 ECAC) came in 1993 with Brown claiming victory and evening the series with a 6-4 win at the Dexter Shoe Classic in Orono, Maine.

Of late, Brown is winless in their last four games and has combined for a record of 2-5-3 in its last 10 games.

Leading the way for Brown has been senior forward Nick Lappin with 7-10--17 after 12 games played this season. Tommy Marchin, a freshman forward, ranks second in scoring for the Bears with six goals and seven assists.

The Lakers resume WCHA play with a home matchup against Bowling Green State Jan. 8-9 before welcoming Alaska-Anchorage Jan. 16-17. LSSU and the Seawolves are currently tied for sixth in the WCHA standings with 12 points each.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Brand new article by www.saultthisweek.com Randy Russon on the good ship Lakers and their second half.

As they eye the second half of the 2015-2016 season, the upstart Lake Superior State Lakers have a heavy Western Collegiate Hockey Association schedule that features 16 games — eight at home and eight on the road.

The Lakers will head into conference play in 2016 with a 4-4-4 record from 12 games, which has them tied for fifth-place in the 10-team WCHA with 12 points.

The Lakers will begin 2016 with four straight games at home — Jan. 8-9 against second-place Bowling Green and Jan. 16-17 against aforementioned Alaska-Anchorage.

As the Lakers ice the youngest team — by far — in the WCHA, head coach Damon Whitten said he is “OK” with the team’s record thus far this 2015-2016 season.

“I like the effort we have been getting and we are definitely improving and doing better than expected for a team that was picked to finish last in the WCHA this season but we have a lot of games to play in the second half and we can’t afford to let up,” said Whitten.

To be sure, the Lakers have been getting a lot out of their younger players.

Of the Lakers top 10 scorers, six are freshmen, two are sophomores and two are juniors.

And of the two goalies who share the workload for the Lakers, one is a freshman and the other is a sophomore.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Here a preview of this week's tournament in Vermont from the Burlington Free Press.

Wanted to make sure Dopey and "Bill" saw that :D

Ringy Dingy!

There is a common theme among the four college hockey team competing in the University of Vermont's Sheraton/TD Bank Catamount Cup at Gutterson Fieldhouse: It's a great opportunity to start turning a season around.

None of the four — host UVM, Lake Superior, Brown and Colgate — has a record on the plus side of .500. Two wins Tuesday and Wednesday could, as Vermont coach Kevin Sneddon pointed out, provide critical momentum as the teams wrap up nonconference play and prepare go plunge back into league competition.

"We've got three other teams that are in very similar situations to ours, teams that are trying to use this tournament probably to springboard their second half," Sneddon said. "It should make for some great hockey."

The Catamounts (3-5-2 Hockey East) are 5-12-2 overall with a 2-6-0 record in their last eight games. Tuesday's opponent, Lake Superior, is 6-10-4 overall, 4-4-4 in the WCHA and 3-1-1 in its last five. Brown (2-7-2; 2-5-2 ECAC) has lost its last four and Colgate (5-11-1; 2-6-1 ECAC) is 1-6-1 in its last eight. The bears and the Raiders play the Cup's first game at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

For Vermont, the Catamount Cup games are the first two of its last four nonleague games that includes New Hampshire on Saturday and Dartmouth on Jan. 8. All four are at The Gut.

"It's a big opportunity for our club," Sneddon said. "We can make some strides and try to get some 'Ws' on the board and try to balance out the win-los column a little bit more and get some confidence going into league play. That's key for us.

"We've played an awfully tough schedule but most of our work is going to have to be done in league play. We understand that. We're certainly in the thick of things with more than half the season left to go in Hockey East play."
Critical to any turnaround UVM hopes to accomplish will be gaining consistency overall and improving dramatically in special teams, where the Catamounts have been woeful. After finishing among national leaders in penalty kill in recent seasons, Vermont is 51st out of 60 NCAA Division 1 teams with a 76.6 percent success rate. The power play is even lower, ranking 58th at 10.2 percent conversion.

"We have to clean up those areas. We've got to start treating it more as a 5-on-5 situation and not just be relaxed and laid back just because we have the extra man or if we're short-handed we have to put in that extra effort because we're down one," said captain Yvan Pattyn. "It's being prepared and being mentally focused man-up or man-down."
