LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I was thinking what was different about watching the Lakers play this past Saturday and the simple answer is that they were fun to watch again. The lakers have not been fun to watch in quite sometime and Saturday, they were fun to watch .

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I was looking at the North Dakota thread and they have three names they are down to so they can replace the Fighting Sioux as there nickname . One is Nodak and a fan wrote, what the hell is a Nodak , . He said I can just see opposing fans chanting No-dik No-dik. God did I laugh.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I am curious which league Arizona ends up in .
I am too. Big 10 makes most sense to me for financial reasons. Then NCHC, for geographic reasons. But we'll see. Can't rule out the WCHA I guess.

This was talked about on this week's Laker Hockey Show. Damon didn't seem to know which league the Sun Devils would choose but I'll be shocked if Arizona State chooses the WCHA. Damon also mentioned that he thinks there will be shifts/realignment in conferences again in a few years,

That is why Bowling Green is holding on to all the CCHA material. If you talk to people from Bowling Green, they think there is a shot the CCHA will be reformed and the reason being is cost of travel.

ASU will probably join the NCHC, but as stated, I think that will be temporary. I really don't think they are able to join the Big 10 if they're not a part of the conference in other sports. I would consider what other Pac-10 teams that might field D-1 hockey. If you watch the first intermission interview with Rick Comley from the 1994 NCAA Championship game, he actually predicted we'd have a Pacific division in college hockey by now. I would love to see some re-alignment, with the WCHA getting Western, Minn-Duluth, and St. Cloud. The Alaska schools joining the Sun Devils in a pacific conference (not Pac-10, one similar to the Great West Hockey Conference from the 80's with Northern Arizona), would probably work best for all involved. Just my opinion, and will definitely enjoy the games this weekend.

Unless the addition of Arizona State causes a sudden surge of western schools adding Div 1 hockey, it's hard to see any kind of Pacific Div 1 hockey conference in the near future. Although I agree that having the two Alaska schools in such a conference makes sense (time zone wise; geographically they're not close to anyone else), that makes only 3 Div 1 hockey schools in the Pacific west. You need at least 6 to make it a viable conference. If and when we get at least 3 more Div 1 programs out in the far west, then I can see it maybe happening.

It's as likely as anything else, and more likely than most. I'm fine with the CCHA being revived as long as UAH can be a part of it this time. ;)

Defenseman Jason Bird leaves the Lakers

Nov. 11, 2015

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State coach Damon Whitten has announced the decision by sophomore defenseman Jason Bird to leave the team, effective immediately.

Bird, a native of Toronto, Ont., appeared in 23 games as a freshman and scored his lone goal of the season in the season-opening game against Michigan Tech. He also racked up four assists during his freshman campaign, including the helper on a game-winning goal against Alabama Huntsville.

Bird has not appeared in any games for the Lakers (2-6-2, 0-2-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) this season.

"We would like to thank Jason for the commitment and service he put into the program," said Whitten in a statement.

"We wish him the best of luck in all of his future endeavors."

I don't think that comes as any big surprise. Damon brought in more D-men than normal last season (his 1st as coach) to create competition for all the openings at that position. I would have been surprised if Wright, Chatham and Bird all stuck with the program. Roque had already recruited Renz and Roll for last season. I kind of thought Wright, Chatham and Bird were probably battling for 2 spots between the 3 of them. And with McArdle and Headrick coming in this season, that put Bird in even more of an odd man out position in terms of playing time.

This will leave us with 6 current D-men following this season. Colin Saccoman is scheduled to come in next season, which brings us up to 7. Either Cole Hults will also now be brought in next season, or we'll be looking for another D-man to bring us up to 8. I'm not sure what the plans were for Cole Hults. I have been thinking he was 2 seasons away, but am not sure. If Cole Hults was projected for 2 seasons out, then maybe Jason Bird didn't like his chances of seeing more playing time next season even with only 8 total D-men.

If it happened, I wonder if LSSU would be a part of the revival of the CCHA or stay in the WCHA?

I would think the CCHA, mainly because of travel costs (especially if we assume that the 2 Alaska schools weren't part of the CCHA). Depending upon how much shuffling there was, if the CCHA was reconstituted, you might even see the NCHC and WCHA combined under one of those two names.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Lake Superior State is one of four Western Collegiate Hockey Association teams to play the Arizona State Sun Devils during their inaugural Division I season.

The puck drops at 7:37 p.m. ET Friday and 7:07 p.m. on Saturday night at Taffy Abel Arena. The games will be broadcast live on your OFFICIAL home for Laker Hockey, 99.5 YES FM, www.yesfm.net, with the Voice of the Lakers, Bill Crawford

Friday night, local veterans, and active or retired military personnel will receive free admission to the game. Immediate family members accompanying the personnel will receive a 50-percent discount. Families are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance at the Norris Center Information Desk and provide some kind of proof of service. The Soo BlueLiners would also like to invite all veterans and active military personnel to the BlueLiner Room for free coffee prior to the game.

The Lakers (2-6-2, 0-2-2 WCHA) enter the matchup with the Sun Devils following a pair of 1-1 ties against then No. 14-ranked Bowling Green State. Last weekend's series saw the Lakers earn their first two points in the WCHA standings in an unconventional series split.

Sophomore goaltender Gordon Defiel (1-4-2) appears to have returned to form after a slow start to this season. Defiel made 70 saves on the 72 shots he faced during the series, good for a .972 saves percentage. The Stillwater, Minn., native also produced a 0.92 goals-against average on the weekend. Defiel turned aside all 29 shots he faced during the third and overtime periods of both games.

With the strong performance last weekend, Defiel raised his saves percentage to a respectable .900 clip and lowered his goals-against average to 3.21.

Senior Zach Loesch (1-0--1) scored his first collegiate goal to help secure the 1-1 tie in the series finale. The tally was Loesch's 10th career point in 91 career games. Josh Nenadal (3-0--3), a freshman from Brecksville, Ohio, netted his third goal of the season during the series opener.

Both goals for the Lakers came during the second period of the series. This season the Lakers have 12 second-period goals, more than any team in the WCHA.

The Sun Devils (3-6-0) became the 60th team in collegiate hockey this off-season, rising from club-team to independent Division I status, and are playing a hybrid schedule against NCAA Division I, Division III and junior A opponents. The Sun Devils also play a number of games against American College Hockey Association club teams.

Arizona State enters the matchup coming off of a bye week. The Sun Devils were swept at Wisconsin Oct. 30-31.

Freshmen Jordan Masters (4-5--9) and Joey Raats (1-7--8) lead the Sun Devils' scoring attack and a freshman class that ranks first nationally in overall points. The Lakers lead the WCHA in rookie scoring and rank sixth nationally.

Ryland Pashovitz fills the roll of starting netminder for the Sun Devils with 378:29 minutes in net this season. Pashovitz holds a 2-5-0 record, 3.01 goals-against average and .919 saves percentage on the season.

The Lakers are tied with Minnesota State for third-most power-play attempts (49) in the nation and are converting 12.2 percent of their attempts. The Lakers' penalty kill currently ranks fifth among WCHA teams with a success rate of 84.1 percent.

The Sun Devils power-play comes in at an impressive 24.3 percent, however their penalty kill currently sits at 80.4 percent.

Following the weekend series against ASU, the Lakers play a two-game WCHA series at Bemidji State. The Lakers enter this week tied with Alaska for eighth-place in the WCHA standings. The Beavers sit one point behind the Lakers, and the Nanooks are 10th.

Alumni Association Tailgate

Join the LSSU Alumni Association for a pre-game tailgate at the Lukenda Alumni House on Sat. Nov. 14 at 5:30pm before the Lakers play the Sun Devils at 7:07 pm. Stop by for a game of foosball or cornhole as the Alumni Association grills up burgers & brats. The cost is $5 per person or free if you bring a dish to pass.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

The Soo BlueLiners invite all veterans and active military attending Friday's Lake Superior State hockey game to a pre-game coffee hour in the Soo BlueLiners Room, located west of the lower-level concession stand and across from the elevator.

LSSU and Arizona State play at 7:37 p.m. Friday in Taffy Abel Arena. All veterans and active military will receive free admission to the game, and their immediate families can get a 50 percent ticket discount. Some type of proof of service is requested.

Tickets can be purchased or obtained in advance at the Norris Center Information Desk in the Norris Center lobby.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I am sure Arizona's power plays and freshmen scoring does look impressive by scoring 16 goals against Southern New Hampshire. Against everyone else they have one power play and 7 goals.
