LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

We're going to be shorthanded tonight. Drapluk, Hayes and Cuglieta are out with injuries. Schmitt is out with the flu. Correale will probably play but is not 100% (injury).

And despite that we tie a very good BGSU team. I'll take it after the disaster of a weekend against UAH. Gordie definitely redeemed himself after his poor play last Friday. I'll be shocked if he hasn't earned the start for tomorrow's game.

Yep, and it would be even nicer to get another point or two tonight. Hopefully the flu hasn't spread.

Don't they get flu shots ? I hope to nights game is a good one to be at. My luck will be we picked the wrong night to make it . I am very interested to find out how good a recruiting class this one is.

You won't get to see some of them. I'm not sure what the lineup for tonight will be but neither CJ Hayes nor Diego Cuglietta made the trip due to injuries. Hayes is probably the fastest guy on the team and Cuglietta is a very good skater also. But you will be able to see several of our first year players.

Tie game at the end of the 2nd, with Zach Loesch netting his first collegiate goal!

Nice to see the Lakers salvage another tie down there. That rink is an absolute joke.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Very nice bounce back weekend for the Lakers. Good job Lakers.

Very nice indeed. A split on the weekend through two ties is something to be proud of playing a ranked team on the road.

Had a great time at BGSU Arena. Two great, intense games and the BGSU fans were friendly. Talked to a couple Laker fans as well.

The Lakers looking good with back-to-back ties on the road against no. 14 ranked Bowling Green. Randy Russon's www.hockeynewsnorth.com has more on this, and the world of local hockey.

Backed by the return-to-form netminding of sophomore goalie Gordon Defiel, the Lakers left Bowling Green with a pair of 1-1 ties versus the Falcons, who had entered the weekend as the no. 14 ranked team in the nation.

The two ties boosted the fortunes of the Lakers, who improved their overall record to 2-6-2 and 0-2-2 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Defiel, a freshman sensation in 2014-2015 who had struggled earlier this 2015-2016 season for the Lakers, came up big in the back-to-back ties by stopping 70 of 72 shots.

Second-year Laker head coach Damon Whitten was full of praise for his charges — and singled out the play of Defiel.

“I thought we played like men,” Whitten told Lakers play-by-play announcer Bill Crawford after Saturday’s tie. “Really proud of the effort, up and down the lineup.

“(Bowling Green) is a tough place to play a hockey game and a tough team to play against. They’re a physical team and I thought we matched that,” continued Whitten. “Gordie Defiel had a heck of a weekend and it’s great to have him back playing the way we know he can.”

With the strong weekend between the pipes, Defiel now has a 1-4-2 record to go with a .900 save percentage and 3.21 goals against average.

The Lakers are home next Friday-Saturday against the Arizona State Sun Devils in a pair of 7:07 p.m. matches at Taffy Abel Arena, you can hear those games, with the Voice of the Lakers, Bill Crawford at www.yesfm.net.

Your Lakers are covered all week long on ESPN 1400 radio http://stream.1400espn.net/ with the Laker Hockey Show, with Bill Crawford and Damon Whitten on Monday night at 6, the Hockey North Show with Randy Russon Tuesday night at 5, and Laker Talk, with Bill and Damon Wednesday morning at 8:30.

Time to pack the Taffy this weekend. Ringy dingy!

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I saw Saturday nights game and it was one hell of a contest. The fan base for Bowling Green was very vocal and the noise they produced filled the rink. Both teams worked hard with non stop action up and down the ice and I was impressed with how the Laker freshmen backed down from no one. Gordie was great in net and the Lakers as a whole never stopped working . This is probably the best conditioned team I have seen in years. The only thing I had worries about was the passing back with the puck and the reason being was that a couple times , there was no player to drop the pass back to and it got picked off by a Bowling Green player and that can come back to bite you. Over all. Great goal tending, great conditioning, and a team that seems to know they are only going to get better.

I think we're on the right track. As young as we are, there is bound to be some inconsistent play at times.

I think the Lakers are on the right track as well. Another year or two with this kind of recruiting and seasoning of the players here already have my hopes and expectations high going forward.

I didn't know Peter Magariotis got picked up by Adrian College . At least he is still playing and going after his education.

Guys who play at a Div 1 hockey school can leave and go play Div 3 without having to sit out a year. It's usually, but not always, because they aren't quite making the grade at the Div 1 level.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I am just surprised Adrian picked him up. Even at division 3, he is playing third string .

Pretty much everyone carries 3 goalies. They probably needed a 3rd and decided to give him a chance. From his perspective, he probably was just looking for a fresh start. I've never seen him play so can't comment on how good or not so good he looked. But he hasn't even made it to the #2 goalie slot anywhere he's played college hockey. He was #3 at OSU, #3 at LSSU, and now #3 at Adrian.
