LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I second that. Bigger louder crowds amp up the player's and putting an exciting skilled team on the ice draws fans.

I think that Damon is on the right track and the crowds should start getting bigger at the Taffy.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

The atmosphere on Saturday night was electric, and the loudest I have heard it for a collegiate hockey game around here in probably 10 years. The announced attendance of 2400 was misleading, there were more in the Taffy Abel Arena.

The announced attendance is the paid attendance, which is always more than the actual attendance. I would guess there were actually about 2100 at the game.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

For those tracking Laker recruits, Bryan Basilico is back in the BCHL playing for Prince George. He was on the Chicago (USHL) roster at the start of the season.

I thought the atmosphere in the arena was the best it has been in a long time. The crowd was really into the game. Not sure if that is due to the alcohol sales.

When buying tickets, did anybody else choose the option of printing your tickets at home? They had issues getting the ticket I printed to scan.

The scanning issues were caused by a lack of wi-fi bandwidth due to too many devices being used in the arena at one time (everyone trying to watch the Michigan game!). Our ticket scanners run on wireless so although tickets scanned fine, it took way too long for them to actually tell us it was scanned and ok. We anticipated this being a potential issue but there really was no way to test it out until we have more than 2,000 people in the arena, which only happens on (regular season) game nights. We are fixing the issue today and next weekend you should encounter no issues.

Sorry, but I call BS. A successful program doesn't end with the support of the fans and community, it STARTS with it. Ask the coaches and players, fan support goes a long way.
That being said, the university can still do a lot more to improve the game experience for fans, and bring in more casual fans off of the street. It's not like there is anything else to do in this town.

I've been in the sports biz for 25 years, college, minor pro, three different sports. I've learned that you can sell beer, give away hot dogs & foam fingers and shoot tshirts to the crowd. But by far the best marketing tool is a "W." You can do a big promotion to get butts in the seats. But if the team doesn't impress, it's all for naught.

Terrific game by the Lakers. They really bottled up the NMU offense and Kossoff was outstanding. Nice to see a good crowd & atmosphere. One of the better I've seen in recent memory.

Does anyone know why there hasn't been a pep band at the home games so far this season?

Another quality and professional interview with Damon Whitten this morning, on Laker Talk, with Bill Crawford on ESPN 1400 Radio. Great to hear their excitement about the team.

Randy Russon talked to LSSU sophomore defenceman Aiden Wright, from Wawa Ontario, who was a late walk-on recruit of Damon Whitten's, on a recent addition of the Hockey North Show, heard every Tuesday 5-6 pm on ESPN 1400 radio. The hard-nosed defenceman talked to Randy about the team and an update on his recent injury at NMU. The affable Wright also had high praise for another young defenceman, freshman Owen Headrick, from Garden River, Ontario, who scored his first collegiate goal Saturday night in the Lakers 4-0 win over NMU.

Go to www.hockeynewsnorth.com for the Wright approach.

I really like Wright and Headrick and I follow RR'S hockey blog. But it would be nice if he interviewed more than just two Lakers and I understand that they are both from across the river. But come on.

ha. it's like Groundhog Day. let me guess, the article also mentioned how Randy was instrumental in helping get Headrick noticed by D1 scouts.

Just watching the archived version of the Saturday win vs NMU on WCHA.tv. Looks like LSSU has fixed their camera issue from last season where each one had a different white balance, and they've switched back to using Bill Crawford's radio feed instead of having dedicated announcers for the video stream (whether this is a permanent change or not I don't know). I would like to see the score bug take up less of the screen (stacking opaque boxes takes up a lot of real estate) and a clock would be nice. Otherwise, the replays were quick and camera work was somewhat improved - still need to get the left hand topside camera to use some more friction on the tripod to smooth out the panning.

Better, but still with room to improve.

The band was not at the game Saturday due to attendance issues - we elected to call it when, a half hour before game time, there were only a half dozen or so of us there. Many members were away on field trips or home visiting family. As for the exhibiton games, it is rare that the band shows up for those. By all accounts, the band will be there next weekend against Huntsville.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Randy Russon doesn't just cover the Lake Superior State University Lakers for his website www.hockeynewsnorth.com and for the weekly www.saultthisweek but he also covers the Ontario Hockey League, Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, North American Hockey League, NA3, and the Great North Midget League, U.S. Premier League and has over 40 years experience. So he hasn't had the chance to interview every player being it's October. I wonder if you have the same questions for other media outlets on the American side, outside of ESPN Radio 1400 and Sovereign's tremendous coverage?

Being based out of Soo, Ontario, he has focused some of his articles and interviews on The Hockey North Show, Tuesday's at 5-6pm on ESPN Radio 1400, for those players in his back yard, and some of the best young players under Damon Whitten. If you don't like it, or want to make snide comments about it, you don't have to choose to read it or go there, you can try to find that kind of coverage somewhere else. Good luck man.

Lakers at Michigan State tonight with Bill Crawford, the Voice of the Lakers on www.yesfm.net. Ringy Dingy.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Hello Lakers,

I am hoping one of you can help me out. I am seeking a mid-90s blue LSSU game used jersey. I have four other LSSU game used jerseys to pick from that I could trade you for it. Why am I seeking this jersey? Here is the semi-short version of the story: A former Lakers hockey player has been having some health issues. One of his friends would like to gift him one of his jerseys from his days at LSSU. I've located one of the player's jerseys however the current owner doesn't want to sell it. He would however be interested in trading it for a mid-90's blue jersey which is what I am seeking to facilitate this swap. Below are the photos of the jerseys I can offer as a trade. If you, or someone you know can help me out, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Ryan Johnson

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

I've been reading RR since his coverage of Matt Caria deciding between LSSU and Major Jr, so 10 years or so I guess. He has always been a bit of a cheerleader for whatever Soo Ontario kid has the best shot at going somewhere past Jr A. I guess that is his job though. And if his articles get even one Canadian to drive across the bridge and buy a ticket to a Laker game, then God Bless him.

Still, with two Soo, Ont kids playing for Lake State, he has an opportunity to increase his readership. I hope he has the time to expand his LSSU coverage a bit, because Laker fans on this side of the bridge will eventually tire of reading about what Owen Headrick had for breakfast this morning (though early returns seem to indicate that the kid is nearly all he was advertised).

I still think Caria made the wrong decision.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015-16: The 50th season

Mogerfan I am right with you on that.

Dave is a real pro. When the Lakers are not playing and Northern is I like to tune in to Dave's call of the game. Just don't tell him because I like to razz him.
