"Mac" is for Gary McClellan. I don't live in the Soo area, but I think he was a long time Soo businessman who died this past summer. I think he was the founder of, or at least instrumental in founding, the Lakers Blue Line Club. Other Lakers fans from the Soo area can probably verify this and provide more info.

Davyd what's your honest take on the Lakers from what you saw last night?
I think they are way ahead of last year and the underclassmen give us hope for the future.

He was the first President of the blueliners Bill. You pretty much nailed it as usual.

Gordie hasn't gotten off to a very good start this season. Tonight would be a good time to give Kossoff a start and let Gordie watch.

I think they have some good young talent. I think team speed is improved a bit. Where they finish at the end of the season largely depends on how quickly some mature. I'll have a little better take after I see them tonight and get a look at Huntsville, Anchorage and Ferris. It's really tough to get a good accurate read on a team based on one early season game. When our fans ask, I tell them to get back to me after I've seen 10 or 12 games.

Hope Wright didn't get hurt too bad last night. I'm just glad he got released out of the hospital and traveled back with the team. I wonder how long he will be out for?

Great win by the Lakers tonight in front of a big crowd. You could really feel the atmosphere in the rink tonight, on Great Lake State weekend. This teams looks a lot better, faster, and skilled than the team head coach Damon Whitten inherited. Nice to see Owen Headrick score his first goal of the season on a blistering shot from the freshman defenceman from Garden River, Ontario, and former Soo Thunderbirds standout from the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. I also liked the play of freshman goalie Nick Kossoff who posted a shutout in his first collegiate start. The freshman standout who played last season for the Keystone Ice Miners of the North American Hockey League was seeing the puck all night.

He has probably earned a start for one of the Michigan State games. I think Gordie will start Thursday and then Nick on Friday.

I thought the atmosphere in the arena was the best it has been in a long time. The crowd was really into the game. Not sure if that is due to the alcohol sales.

When buying tickets, did anybody else choose the option of printing your tickets at home? They had issues getting the ticket I printed to scan.

Is alcohol sales new this year at the arena? I heard MTU started selling this year.

The atmosphere on Saturday night was electric, and the loudest I have heard it for a collegiate hockey game around here in probably 10 years. The announced attendance of 2400 was misleading, there were more in the Taffy Abel Arena. Give a lot of credit to the athletic department and the good folks that put on the events for Great Lake State Weekend. There was a lot of buzz around campus all weekend for the Lake Superior State University Lakers hockey team, and what head coach Damon Whitten is bringing to the program. With a 30-player roster that includes 11 freshmen, the Lake Superior State University Lakers continue a project in progress, but they are making some on and off the ice.

Can't wait to hear Bill Crawford and Damon Whitten on the Laker Hockey Show tonight.

Put together a winning team,an exciting team,a fun team and the fans will come. If this team can start to turn things around, getting fans in will not be a problem.

Sorry, but I call BS. A successful program doesn't end with the support of the fans and community, it STARTS with it. Ask the coaches and players, fan support goes a long way.
That being said, the university can still do a lot more to improve the game experience for fans, and bring in more casual fans off of the street. It's not like there is anything else to do in this town.

Back in the 80s when the wings were struggling to win games, you could go down game night and buy a ticket for the game. When things changed and the wings became a power house in the NHL, getting tickets game night was next to impossible and why? Fans will come to watch winners and grow tired watching losses. Does this team want fan support? Give them something entertaining and fun and exciting to watch. Every Laker fan out there grew tired the last 18 years hoping this would be the year they turn around. If the team wins and the people show up and if the team keeps losing and the fans don't show up, you just got a birds eye view on how it all works.

I can see your point, but the Lakers are not a professional team, and the Soo isn't Detroit. We are lucky to have a D-1 hockey program in this town, and it needs to be supported to be successful. You can argue the chicken and the egg all day, I guess, or you can simply support your team. I'm an alumni and fan, and I'll be in the stands win or lose enjoying the game. I enjoy the time with my kids and interacting with the other Laker fans, and that has nothing to do with the product on the ice.

The university itself can add more fans at the game through promotions, theme nights, giveaways, and advertising. Even if they added just another 100+ fans a game it would be worth it.
