Friday's game got away from the Lakers because of BG's tripping, clutching, grabbing, and holding the stick which BG is a master at in the corners by the way...but tonight the refs put on their glasses and saw a totally different game which Lakers came out on top. Funny how things have a way of working themselves out when the game is played on an even level. Seeing the game live as opposed to WCHA.tv really is an eye opener too...Lakers had 25 shots last night and lost and tonight BG had 25 shots and lost. Kinda weird how things work out.

Owen Guy, a 1998 birth-year centre who was selected by the Soo Greyhounds in the fifth round of the 2014 Ontario Hockey League draft, has made a future commitment to play for the Lake Superior State Lakers of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
The 5-foot-9, 175-pound Guy is currently playing for the Kemptville 73’s of the Central Canada Hockey League. In 41 games with Kemptville thus far this season, Guy has 19 goals, 17 assists, 36 points.
He is expected to begin playing at Lake Superior State effective the 2017-2018 season.

Big big win for Damon Whitten and the LSSU Lakers over a ranked and very good Bowling Green team. The refs were much better tonite, as they cost the good ship Laker the game last night. Gordon Defiel and Owen Headrick were the stars of the show, in front of a good crowd, as they continue to surge up the standings in the WCHA.

It took all of regulation and just over a minute of overtime, but Lake Superior State hockey found the only goal of the game during the Western Collegiate Hockey Association weekend series finale against No. 16 Bowling Green on Saturday night.
The 1-0 victory gives the Lakers a record of 8-12-4 and 5-5-4 in the WCHA. The eight wins by the Lakers this season matches their total win output from 2014-15.
"I'm just really proud," said head coach Damon Whitten of his team's determination in the victory. "I thought we played like men, I thought we played hard, and I thought we certainly deserved to win that game."
"For us to go earn it in overtime, I'm just so proud of the effort across the board," continued Whitten. "We talked about not having any passengers; the Lakers didn't have any passengers. They showed up and played like men. That's a big win for us."
Gordon Defiel (5-8-3) produced 25 saves for the Lakers in recording his first shutout of the season and the fifth of his career.
In front of 1,664 fans at Taffy Abel Arena, freshman Diego Cuglietta netted his third career-collegiate goal and second career game winner off a deflected shot by fellow freshman Matt McArdle.
With four assists to date in his freshman campaign, Cuglietta now has a total of seven points in 22 games.
Another freshman, Anthony Nellis (3-7--10) also assisted on the play to become the fifth Laker to reach 10 points on the season. During 2014-15 a total of seven players reached at least 10 points.
Chris Nell produced a terrific night between the pipes for the Falcons (9-3-5) for the second consecutive evening. Nell stopped 31 shots by the Lakers before the redirected overtime winner snuck past him.
In four contests against each other this season the teams split a win each and a pair of 1-1 ties at Bowling Green in November. For the four-game series the Falcons scored a total of five goals to the Lakers' four.
Neither team connected on a power-play goal in four opportunities apiece.
For the second-consecutive evening the Lakers defense produced 18 blocked shots, headlined by freshman forward Mitch Hults blocking four shots on the evening.
The Lakers also won the faceoff battle, 32-25.
LSSU plays host to Alaska Anchorage next Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 16-17.

Great game last night. Happy to see Cuglietta net the winner after watching him be stoned on two beautiful chances earlier. With the way the defence and goaltending has been playing, this team looks as though it can give somebody serious fits come WCHA tournament time.
Next week is UAA, who just got swept by Bemidji at home.
And for those keeping score, with the win last night, the Lakers have equalled their win total from last season!

The one area where the defense was weak in this series was defending the long stretch pass. That led to BG's first goal Friday on a breakaway by Cooper (I think). BG also got a breakaway on the same play Saturday (from Spezia) but Gordie stoned him. They also came close to making that play work a couple of other times. Our D-men have to do a better job watching for that play regardless of the opponent.

The Lakers are a tough team to beat at this point with the defense and goal tending playing solid hockey for the most part and yet at the same time they are a team that is finding it tough to win every weekend with the offense struggling to put pucks into the net.

Anybody know why the UAA series is Saturday/Sunday instead of the traditional Friday/Saturday? It's also odd we play UAA twice in the same half of the season as well. Very rarely do you play two series against the same team in the same half.

Looking at the schedule, UAA plays at BG next Thursday and Friday. Looks as though they were trying to get a shorter road trip (assuming they're staying down here for the duration.)

Damon Whitten does not make it a habit to go overboard when praising his young Lake Superior State Lakers but the second-year head coach was gushing with pride following a 1-0 overtime win over the visiting Bowling Green Falcons on Saturday night.
“I’m just really proud,” Whitten of the Lakers. “I thought we played like men, I thought we played hard, and I thought we certainly deserved to win that game.”
“For us to go earn it in overtime, I’m just so proud of the effort across the board,” continued Whitten. “We talked about not having any passengers and we didn’t have any passengers. They showed up and played like men. That’s a big win for us.”
In front of close to 1,700 fans at Taffy Abel Arena, three freshmen combined for the game winner just over a minute into OT to give the Lakers the stunning victory over second-place Bowling Green.
Forward Diego Cuglietta tallied his third goal of the season with assists from fellow freshmen Matt McArdle and Anthony Nellis and sophomore goalie Gordon Defiel made 25 saves for the shutout.
The win improves the Lakers record to 5-5-4 and 14 points, good for seventh place in the tight, 10-team Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
To be sure, the Lakers are only two points back of fifth-place Ferris State and Northern Michigan with two games in hand on both the Bulldogs and Wildcats and are just three points behind fourth-place Bemidji State with four games in hand on the Beavers.
Overall, the Lakers have a record of 8-12-4 on the season. The eight wins ties their win total from 2014-2015 with 14 games still to play in the 2015-2016 regular-season.
With the setback, Bowling Green remains in second place in the WCHA with 22 points from a 9-3-4 record.
The Lakers are home again next Saturday and Sunday when they play host to the eighth-place Alaska Anchorage Seawolves.
Tune into the Laker Hockey Show, with the Voice of the Lakers, the legendary Bill Crawford, on Monday night at 6 p.m. on ESPN Radio Station 1400.

That may turn out to be the case. I've heard the NCAA has been a little more lenient in the past year on how long a player may have to sit out. Things may be changing a little. In this case, it may also depend upon whether Gelsinger and his family have any type of records showing how many WHL games he actually played and how many of them were pre-season vs regular season. He had 5 goals in 2 games this past weekend in the BCHL, which is encouraging to we Lakers fans assuming he will be able to play for us eventually.

I wouldn't be surprised if Brett Boeing is on their radar. Damon recruited him to Michigan Tech. He left the program after the GLI and is back in the USHL.
