LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

I know there was talk earlier regarding the WCHA playoff format. Does anyone know if it has changed to allow all teams into the post season? Seems like it would be pretty easy to do and would make things more exciting for some bottom end teams.
I haven't heard of any changes.

For everyone who wanted to see more recruiting in the USHL, we have our first USHL recruit under Damon; Tanner Karty, a forward from Des Moines:

The playoff format remains the same. Personally, I like the 8 team format. I also like that each team will play its' nearest rival on the final weekend of the regular season this year.

And another verbal commitment. Brody Brunet, played for Sudbury of the NOJHL last season and playing for Smith Falls of the CCHL this season:

97 birth date, so he has time to develop in Juniors. Probably will become a Laker when the coaches feel he is ready.

Thanks for the updates Bill. Damon sure is active with future prospects, a nice change.

Looks like there are now 4 goalies on the roster for the upcoming season.

The 4th goalie, Aaron Davis, was in school at LSSU last season and practiced with the team after the holidays. He has NAHL experience.

Who do people think will be the starter going into the season? I think Megariotis will play the games against Tech, since he has some experience and there will only be a few hours of official practice up until that point.

I think it's pretty wide open at this point. On paper, Aldridge perhaps has the edge as the principal goalie recruit. He had pretty decent stats at Fairbanks. Megariotis had decent stats in the NAHL but hasn't played in game conditions in two years. He didn't play at all at OSU, then sat out last season after transferring to LSSU, and if I remember correctly he wasn't able to practice the last half of the season due to injury. Defiel had excellent stats in the SIJHL a couple of years ago, but that's a weaker league. Last season in the BCHL his stats weren't that good in the regular season but then he played very well in the playoffs. I'd be surprised if Davis sees any action; his numbers in the NAHL weren't very good. He'd have to really shine in practices to get a chance.

I"d expect at least two, and maybe all three, of the Aldridge/Megariotis/Defiel trio to see some action fairly early in the season to see if any of them stands out above the others. A lot will probably depend on what they show in practices. I kind of thought it would be mainly a two person fight for playing time between Aldridge and Megariotis, but Defiel's strong post-season play in the BCHL might get him some additional consideration and put him right in the mix with Aldridge and Megariotis.

My guess is that both Aldridge and Megariotis play the first weekend of the season. I guess we'll find out in just four short weeks.

I think it's wide open as well. Other then Davis who I think is a depth and practice goalie it will be a battle. Before the coaching change and Diefel was brought in my guess would have been Aldridge getting the nod.

This season the Lakers will be picked once again next to last but this season will be a mystery with the coaching changes .

A mystery too because of four goalies that haven't played one second of NCAA Division 1 hockey.

Anyone can recruit mediocre talent, or even bad players for that matter. Time will tell, but I'm not holding my breath!

A post such as this is indicative of your disdain for the program and really shows how little you know....the Lakers just acquired a true blue chipper and one that Roque himself was heavily after. This player could have been playing in the O last year as a 16 year old. As it was he was one of the better defensemen for a very strong T-bird squad last year and is expected to be the go to player on the back-end for the same team this year.

Wonder if he's the big recruit that Billy Muckalt mentioned the other day that he had just lost the battle for.

Great pick up by the Lakers. not surprised as Damon is a great recruiter.

Whitten did not recruit this kid - Roque did. So, this acquisition cannot be credited to Whitten.

It will be interesting to see how many of Whitten's recruits will get gassed when all is said and done. Actually recruiting 30-35 kids is brilliant for Lake State. It's like what they're doing with their JV basketball program. LSSU is lacking in academic reputation, so it won't bother anyone at the school when they're cut. Sure it's all fun and games until a parent sues the school for breach of contract!
