LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

Congratulations to Joey Shawhan on his new position as assistant coach at MTU.

=Bill;5979677 Perhaps a bit of a surprise since we already have 4 other D recruits.

Perhaps a defenseman that played last season won't be back? Perhaps Damon wants a bigger roster than Roque did?

We have another D-man recruit for this coming season. Perhaps a bit of a surprise since we already have 4 other D recruits. The latest is Kyle Chatham who played for Powell River of the BCHL.

These last 2 recruits have both have USHL ties, hopefully this is the start of a trend for the Whitten era.

It may take a while to see if we start pulling in more guys from the USHL. There will only be 3 Seniors on this coming season's team, all forwards (Perfetto, Ciotti, Dommett), so there won't be many guys to replace from a numbers standpoint (unless there are some early departures) from Damon's first season with the Lakers. There are three commits for beyond this season, Gauthier, Gorowsky, and Basilico, all forwards. The recruiting web sites are currently showing them as 2015-16 season commits. Gorowsky is a 94 birth date, so he would have to come in for the 2015-16 season. Basilico is a 95 birth date, so he could come in either 2015-16 or 2016-17, although he's currently targeted for 2015-16. Gauthier is a 96 birth date so he could come in anywhere from 2015-16 to 2017-18; it will likely depend upon how fast he develops with the Eagles. Although I think Damon has better USHL contacts than Jim Roque had, and like everyone else I would like to see the Lakers recruit more USHL players, I don't know how soon we'll see that happen. It's going to take a few years for him to have a team that he was instrumental in recruiting (with help from Metro and Aubry of course). And just having USHL players on your team doesn't guarantee success. Both WMU and BG, under prior coaching staffs, had a lot of USHL players on their teams, but that didn't translate to having much success on the ice.

According to the 2014-15 schedules thread, we MIGHT be playing at Notre Dame October 17-18. Even though our schedule was already released, it's possible Dunbar or someone else really goofed up and didn't add those games to the schedule.

Something I discovered when looking for the ND schedule: http://www.und.com/sports/m-hockey/sched/nd-m-hockey-sched.html

Even though it still has last year's schedule, the "Events" section at the bottom has most of next year's games listed. LSSU is listed as October 17-18. Since we didn't play them last year on those dates, it is consistent with what you are saying. It is possible the games were added after the LSSU Schedule was released, as I know in my talks with Coach Whitten he was still looking to add a couple more games.

The Notre Dame games were added to the LSSU schedule so it's pretty much official now.

I saw the Chatham kid play with Green Bay. Nice pickup for LSSU. Good size, decent skater. Likely will start out as a depth player but could develop to a top 4 D man in a couple years. His younger brother was a 3d round pick of the Devils this year.

I happened to notice that all three goaltenders on the LSSU roster last year were seniors. Are any of them returning with another year of eligibility? Or will the goaltenders be all new? Also, I didn't see any goaltenders in the Heisenberg recruit list for LSSU. What's the story for goaltending for this upcoming season? Did I miss something?

Three new goalies this season. 2 recruits and 1 transfer. Recruits are Kevin Aldridge (Fairbanks-NAHL) and Gordie Defiel (Coquitlam-BCHL). Transfer is Pete Megariotis (from Ohio State). Heisenberg missed Aldridge. Megariotis was at OSU one season, then transferred to LSSU and sat out this past season.

That was a very good interview. I am a little excited about the future of the Lakers with coach Whitten, in three years we will see.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

A lot of BCHLers coming in, can't complain with that! From all reports I've read, it appears the BCHL is becoming one of the better college feeders in junior hockey. I think the one thing we can all agree on is Whitten is certainly hitting the recruiting trail hard early on.
