LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

I watched the Whitten press conference online. It said 102 people were watching it. So, looks like more people were interested in Whitten's press conference than Frank's, seeing his wasn't available online, so if you wanted to watch it, you had to be there.

You mean to tell me that more people would rather do activities at home and watch a PRESS CONFERENCE on their computer or phone than waste half of a Saturday of nice weather going up to LSSU and watching it in person? I just can't believe that. After all, momma says the internet is the devil!

Like-able does NOT win games! I wish him lots of luck - he's going to need it!

Like able will win fans. It is great place to start. Lakers need a guy who interact with the fans. He can sell those empty seats. Damon's smile and personable personality is what Soo needs. He brings positive energy to the program. This guy is going to sell the program to the public.

I'm going crazy waiting each day wondering who will be added as the AC, Coach Whitten I must ask in the words of Chris Farley “Sweet mother of god what is the hold up!”Just kidding the board has been quite of late. Everyone have a safe Memorial Week-end.

How many more players do we need now? I know we still need a 3rd string goalie, but anyone else? Also I'm guessing we won't know the new assistant coaches until at least the middle of June.

I'm not sure what Damon'e philosophy on roster size is. We've usually had 26, which seems to be a fairly common number at the Div 1 level. Damon came from Tech, which has been carrying several more than that and which also has had to try and juggle recruits, but that may very well be more of a Mel Pearson philosophy. We lost 9 guys; 3G, 4D and 2F. So far we've lined up 2 new Gs, 3 new D and 1 new F. I think the primary need at this point is one more forward. True, they'll probably bring in another goalie but that may depend on whether they can find a guy with decent junior stats to walk on. We actually had another goalie in school this past year who practiced with the team the latter part of the season, and who could be the #3 goalie for next season if they can't find someone else they are happy with on short notice. They likely will try to find another D for next season, although that may or may not be a walk on situation. Roque was talking up Nathan Harris on some of the hockey shows this past season as a really good skater who he expected to play a bigger role next season (and probably give him scholarship money). Whether Whitten will have the same opinion on Harris, I don't know. Harris is still a question mark. He needs to bulk up and get stronger, plus the jury is still out on whether he will come back from his concussion problem he had in Juniors. And there are those who feel Pete Spratte will see more playing time on D next season as well.

With DW's past as somewhat of a penalty kill expert it will be interesting not only to see what kind of PK the Lakers can roll out next year but also what type of PP DW decides to go with, hopefully that will be improved....coaching a PK, one would think he would be familiar with a type of PP that would be hard to defend.

Tech only finished one notch better than LSSU on the PK last year. Whatever scheme you use, the key is having the players to execute it. As for assistants, I'm sure he needs to find individuals who will work for a half step up from, "Would you like fries with that?" I'm more than certain the resume pool is no deeper for the AC positions than it was for the head coach position. Don't expect an experiences recruiter with a track record of success. As long as we continue to fund this program, the coaching staff, the support staff at the bottom of the league, we cannot expect to be at the upper echelon on a consistent basis.

Three more wins would have put the Lakers on home ice in the first round of the playoffs instead of sitting home.

I think RapidsCity was refering to Tech being one notch better then the Lakers about the penalty kill. I think we all know that with more wins the Lakers would have had a playoff birth, heck take one of the conference losses and turn it into a tie and some other team would have been sitting home.

My point was that the LSSU situation may not be as dire as some might think, despite the lack of funding. Even a small improvement could put them in a significantly better position. If they can get one or more of the new goalies to give them a boost, they could well contend for a home playoff berth.

Oh, most of us know that too. Thats why we wanted a better coach and hopefully Damon Whitten can do the job.
