LSSU Lakers 2014-15

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

You definitely deserved to win Friday night's game. I have no idea what the BG players' mindset was going into this series but their heads weren't on straight Friday night. For me it was like a flash back to 5 years ago when we could do absolutely nothing right, and that was all due to how LSSU came out with guns a blazing. You had us back on our heels from the first through a large part of the second period and by the time we righted the ship (sort of) it was too late.

As for our crowds, they have been steadily growing this year so, yes, winning solves a lot of problems. I had no idea what to expect this weekend and was very pleased with the turnout.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

Should be a much welcomed bye week for the Lakers coming up this weekend. The injured guys will get to rest up before a big series with Alaska. Maybe Nardi and Patterson will be good to go after the bye, that'd be nice. Hopefully Anchorage and Huntsville struggle and it will be interesting to see what happens in BGSU at Bemidji this weekend. Hard to say if we should be cheering more for Anchorage and Huntsville to fail or if we can catch up to a spiraling Northern. Huntsville and NMU series will be key and the trip to Fairbanks after the bye is going to be a tough one I think.
Heard something about a Blue/White game at the Pullar this weekend. Sounds like it's going to be free or by donations??? Should be a fun day down there with Sault High and Eagles playing there too!

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

I wouldn't be surprised to see UAA sweep NMU this weekend. I never realized until just now how poorly the Wildcats have played the past two months. They are winless in 13 out of their last 15 games. Walt Kyle must be feeling the heat.

I can't wait for the blue/white game Saturday. It's so cool to see them playing at the Pullar again. Kudos to Damon for doing this.

Which guys are injured on the Lakers ? Does Sandler have to sit out any games for that hit in the back he gave a Bowling Green player Saturday night ?

Laker Hockey Show is on shortly. We should get an injury update then.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

Anyone listen to it? Oddly for some reason, the podcast of tonight's show is not up. What is the injury update and anything else worth noting?

I heard most of it. I was going to go back and listen to the portion I missed but I too noticed the podcast isn't up yet.

They talked some about injuries, without getting specific. Patterson is skating again but hasn't been cleared for contact. They hope he will be ready soon; maybe even available to play in the Blue-White game. Nardi may or may not be able to play in the Blue-White game. They hope he can. Miller was out with mono, but it sounds like he is close to being ready to play; he just has to show that he's ready by what he does in practice. It also sounded like Harris is ready to go. Barring anything adverse happening in practices (or the Blue-White game), it sounds like the team should be fairly healthy by the UAF trip. Maybe Nardi is still a question mark depending upon just what his injury is.

UAF plays on an Olympic size rink so that may help Loesch's chances of making the trip. The coaches like his skating ability. He still has to play well enough in practice.

They clarified why Defiel only has 3 years of eligibility. The rule is that once a player reaches his 21st birthday, unless he is enrolled full time in school he can't continue to play Junior hockey without losing a year of eligibility. Defiel turned 21 last January and finished out the season playing at Merritt but wasn't enrolled full time in school. At least that's how I understood what Damon and Bill C were saying.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

I read the book Unbroken about Louis Zamperini the Olympian and a POW of the Japanese and when Louis was first training as a runner ,he said he found how to be successful in sports and it was an easy truth . Workout harder than everyone else. it is so important for a team like the Lakers competing against more talented teams to workout harder than everyone else. Strength and conditioning can turn the tables when competing.

That's a great book and makes a good point: talent will only take you so far before harder work and preparation makes the difference between winning and losing. But what came to mind was at Tech when Jamie Russell kept talking on and on about "making sure we're the best conditioned team in the WCHA" and ran an extremely hot weightroom schedule, and half the team was out with injuries by December two years in a row. "Work out harder than everyone" needs to be balanced somehow with smart rest, nutrition, stretching, whatever it takes to keep muscles attached to bones.

I was wondering why Defiel had only three years of eligibility. You explained what was said on the subject well Bill.

The Soo High game starts at 1 p.m. and is Pink n the Rink against Escanaba. Proceeds of this game will go to the Road to Recovery. The jersey's that Soo High will be wearing were donated by Dr. Smith and they look real good. Ticket prices for the game are only 5 dollars with Sault school kids being free.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

How has the attendance been at Taffy this year with Whitten at the helm?

No noticeable uptick yet, though the student section is starting to fill in again.

The other night when they announced 1,900+ it was a very generous number. I think they counted anyone over 125 lbs as two people.

But you are hearing more chatter around town about them. Rightly or wrongly, they will always be held the the gold standard set from 88-94; but it seems people are willing to give Whitten a chance to see if he can right the ship.

Obviously there's less home series this year compared to last season but there has been a reported increase in ticket sales compared to weekends around the same time as last year, so it appears that there is a little bit more of a buzz this year which is nice. I know people don't like to go watch a losing effort but for as much as the Soo tries to claim that they're a 'hockey town' they sure could do a better of a job showing up. Good attendance goes a long way to winning games as well, in terms of crowd intensity and it attracts future recruits who may be in for a visit.

Paid attendance matters, so if someone did a buyout or season ticket-holders didn't show, they still count.
