LSSU Lakers 2014-15

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

This certainly has been a dismal season so far...who knows, perhaps the team can make some noise in the playoffs but I'm not holding my breath against one of the top ranked teams in the nation. What has made this year some what bearable has been the quality of the recruits who have either made a verbal commitment or signed a LOI...you have to go all the way back to Jackson's tenure to find recruiting classes that rival what Whitten and co. have put together so far. If they can get these kids on campus, develop them properly and have them play within their system then there is little doubt that this program will be at or near the top of the WCHA within the next five years.
Of course much can happen, some recruits may renege, others perhaps will not be as advertized but all in all, these are some very very impressive prospects coming in, the likes that we have not seen here in quite some time!
It will be interesting to see how many recruits we actually have on campus in the Fall. I don't think even Whitten and crew know the answer to that as of yet.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

Anyone here making the games to Mankato?

Schedule news for next year. According to Damon on tonight's show, the non-conference series with NMU will be home and home, not both games in Marquette as previously thought. Also the US-Under 18 team will play at Abel Arena with Damon hoping for a blue/white game the day before. Also the Arizona State series will be early in the season within the first few weeks. Very nice to know that there will be more home games next year, with at least four more games.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

Anyone happen to have a collection of Laker programs from over the years? In particular, I'm looking for ones from 1966-67 (the first season of the program) and 1971-72. I've got most of the Laker roster information from over the years but some of it from the first decade is a bit sketchy. What I'm really after is roster info from those couple of seasons (uniform number, height, weight, hometown, academic year of player) and that's the type of info you normally see in programs. Yes I know there are pictures of the Laker teams on the wall in the Norris Center, but the pictures don't have the roster type info I'm after. There are a couple of other early seasons where my information is a bit sketchy also, but if I had roster info from those two seasons it would help. Thanks.

If you have no luck, I bet the LSSU Sports Information office would have programs and media guides from years past that they would allow you to copy.

I appreciate the reply Dopey. Actually the SID office was very helpful in providing me access to hockey media guides from years past when I've been up to the Soo, and that's where I gathered most of my information. There were a few seasons that I couldn't find media guides for; the SID office indicated they would try and look through their files and see if they can find the ones I couldn't find. In cases where I couldn't find a media guide, I was able to reconstruct roster type info from the surrounding (prior and following) season media guides, but not always as thoroughly as I would have liked. For season one (1966-67), for which I couldn't find a media guide, I could only try and reconstruct a roster from the following season media guide (there was no prior season) plus the team picture in the Norris Center. That is the season where I think my information is most sketchy. What I have now is a spreadsheet of roster information from every year of the program, starting with 1966-67. Some of the information, particularly from the first decade, just isn't as complete as for later seasons. For example, it wasn't until the early 80s before the rosters in media guides started including information about the prior (Junior or High School) team a Laker played for. I've been able to come up with some of that information for earlier seasons, but not all of it. I figured it might be a bit far fetched to inquire if anyone has a collection of programs from all seasons past (especially the early ones), but it doesn't hurt to ask.

If those three guys are completely healthy, then I assume guys like Vernace, Angus, Loesch and Sandler looked better in practices earlier this week.

I thought Clemment was coach's golden boy. I'm just a little miffed by this. I also don't expect Nardi and Miller to be on next year's roster ... among others.

Also curious why coach left the senior banquet before any of the senior speeches ... or to stay and talk with parents afterwards?

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

*This coach won 8 of 36 games this season, half the total from last season.

*Out of 36 games this season, the Lakers scored one goal or less in 21 of those 36.

* The Lakers scored 2 goals or less in 27 games for the season.

*No other team had more losses in the nation that Lake Superior State.

*Power play last in the nation all year long.

*All other stats last or near last in the league and the nation.

*Attendance was as low as it has ever been for the season, with fewer fans attending games this season in recent memory.

*For his career, Mr. Witten has won 86 out of 298 games as either head or assistant coach with LSSU, Michigan Tech, Alaska Anchorage, and Wayne State (video taping doesn't count)

What I'm saying here is this guy didn't have a record of accomplishment on his resume, and certainly hasn't helped his situation or this team in one year with their record on the ice, and his constant complaining off it and in interviews. All one has to do is go to the podcasts of the Laker Hockey Show or listen to his interviews after the game, where he, at times sounds snide and certainly unprofessional complaining about officials.

Maybe everything will come together and the Lakers will have a great weekend, or maybe next year with his system and a few more recruits it will start to take shape, or maybe in a few years once he fully gets the chance.

After one regular season, I certainly have my doubts!

Unfortunately I only made it to 1 game this year and what I saw in the first period was very exciting; the other two periods were another story. I do believe when he gets his guys in and playing his system there will be a great improvement. A person I thought pretty highly of didn't do as well at Princeton, as Whitten did a here. It is going to be interesting to see the type of players they will be having come in the next couple of years. I am confident they will improve in the next couple of year and look forward to seeing more games in the coming years.

I think the coaches like his skating ability. He hasn't produced much offense this season, although that is true of many of the Lakers players. He's played in most of the Lakers games. Could be that the coaches feel he's been lax on the defensive end of his game lately, or maybe he just got outworked in practice by some of the other guys early this week. Could also be that he's a bit banged up.

I thought about making the trip, but was just over that way for the Saturday MTU vs. Mankato game a couple weeks ago. Glad I did not make the trip now.

It is a pretty cool city and arena to go visit. Nothing special about the rink, but it was a good atmosphere inside the rink.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

My only question at this point, is why Whitton continues to play a style he currently does not have the players for.
