Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2012-2013, Part 2
First congratulations to the Falcons.
IT’S TIME.
I’m sitting here at the end of the season watching the Lakers barely get a home series for the playoffs and once again at the bottom of the conference; then watching an early exit in the post season. While two of the perennial basement dwellers, Western Michigan and Bowling Green, improving their respective programs by making coaching changes in the last 3 years (Western twice). This is new territory for Michigan, MSU and Northern each will likely improve their standings in their new conferences next year.
Putting 5 million dollars into renovations to the arena and getting more money into the program is fantastic! All parties who worked on this should be commended. However, I have a question for AD Dunbar: what is LSSU willing do to improve itself in standings going into a new conference. Money is always key, but she has ignored a glaring problem for too long, as I said after the Miami game they should be embarrassed by their performance and they should be embarrassed by their performance, again, this past weekend.
You can have the finest arena in the conference and new monies for the program; but if you have a coach who is not capable of putting together a winning season you will have WASTED the $5 million renovation and the new money coming into the program. I agree the talent has improved on the team; but the record has not improved. If changes are not made to improve the product on the ice, everyone’s hard work to improve the program will have been wasted.
A winning record put seats in the seats of the newly renovated Taffy Arena thus bringing more money to the program, which will enable LSSU to attract additional better recruits. Generally when schools have a winning sports program enrollment goes up. I have no reason to think this could not happen at LSSU.
I am a Laker fan through and through and have contributed in my own way over the last several years and would like to see the Taffy full of fans watching an exciting team capable of winning more than half of its games. Look what happen to Bowling Green’s crowds with just a winning second half of the season.
LSSU cannot wait to get into a conference where team records are worse than LSSU’s and say ‘Hey Look At Us We Really Have Improved’. I believe in loyalty but: It’s time – AD Dunbar needs to step up and make a coaching change to take the program to the next level after the CCHA Tourney. Jim Roque’s coaching ability will not improve any because he has a newly renovated Taffey Arena. Do you want a beautifully renovated building, with 1700-2000 (or less) watching a losing program? Or make a change and put some excitement back in the program? Wouldn’t it be nice to see 2,500 – 3,000 for a game and maybe that special night when it is sold out?
Sorry about being so windy but; if AD Dunbar is unwilling to step up then President McClain needs to step in and make a change in both positions. Again, if changes are not made to improve the on ice product everyone’s hard work to improve the program will have been wasted. I will keep going to the games because I am a Laker fan but: What a terrible- terrible shame it would be to waste all the work to improve the program; then leave a loosing coach in his program!
