Lindenwood to D-I

The Tommies likely have more money at their disposal than any other team in their conference should they choose to steer it to hockey. I would guess they committed to build a rink as soon as it was feasible. I'm not aware of any special arrangements that were made for them to join. It's a hockey crazy state and they're a private school with wealthy alumni and a tradition of successful hockey at lower levels. It shouldn't be any great challenge for them to get a facility funded and built when they find the right solution/location.

Just because they have a huge endowment doesn't mean they can throw money around like there's no tomorrow. They don't get public money to operate, they have to fund themselves through tuitions and that endowment. Like every other school in the new CCHA, the program will likely require a lot of funding from alumni and boosters- more so than the public universities. And I wouldn't focus so much on their facilities for now. What would be interesting is who they hire to run the program and how much they pay him.

...the program will likely require a lot of funding from alumni and boosters...
I completely agree and being located in MN, their men's hockey team will the be the signature program of their new D-I athletic department. If the men's hockey team and any other St Thomas athletic team hold their hands out to boosters and alumni at the same time, I would guess as many as 7 or 8 out of every $10 donated will land in the hockey hand.

While they’ve readily acknowledged they need to upgrade where they play hockey, keep in mind the reason they jumped to division 1 and were kicked out of their league was football. I think it will be a 1a &1b situation with hockey & football where hockey has more need for the money

The Tommies will play in the non scholarship Pioneer Football League. So my guess is that hockey may get priority.

Lindenwood's AD appeared on this podcast: https://www.extrapointsmb.com/lindenwood-ad-ovc-podcast-confernce-realignment/ to discuss the school's move to D-I generally.

In it they discussed the status of men's hockey. Essentially, they had hoped to get it done in 2021 but the fundraising didn't get where they wanted. Moving to D-I in all sports changes the monetary calculations a bit, so they need to regroup, and nothing is imminent. It remains on their radar and they think college hockey could succeed in St. Louis.

Lindenwood has been an odd case, ever progressing but not quite getting there. I think they have all the intention in the world, its just easier said than done.

A future NCAA D1 addition or just wishful thinking......? Would be great but it'll be some time if it happens at least according to the tone of the article.......

Sounds rock solid. I’ve always found declarations of intentions to move to NCAA D1 from current club players to be far more credible than coming from school athletic departments.

Andy Strickland is saying that D1 hockey is back on for the 22-23 season.

It's been an interesting couple weeks for Lindenwood. They recently announced a full athletic department reclassification from NCAA D2 GLVC to NCAA DI OVC. Although, that was the long-term plan when they moved from NAIA to NCAA D2 in 2013, the plan was to spend about 10 years as an NCAA D2 member then look to go D1. Then on Friday, LU announced that the AD, Brad Wachler left. Seems unexpected since he just handled the OVC DI move. Maybe that was the break LU Hockey needed, Wachler seemed supportive but not outright fighting to add DI Men's Hockey. Here's the article on the AD leadership change: https://lindenlink.com/176174/sports...ate-athletics/

Apparently, Andy Strickland also referenced the AD change and LU Pres stepped in to get the final donors on board. https://twitter.com/andystrickland/status/1503043376568012801?s=20&t=2UQvJV-QsvFpjWYukr-qsA

Maybe Lindenwood starting up will cause the SLU Billikens to restart D1 hockey as well after 40 plus years and rejoin the CCHA. If Chaifetz could be converted it would immediately be one of the top facilities in D1.

Best possible news for UAH, by the way.

There are viable routes to a conference for them, but every one of those options gets easier if any of the southern schools that have publicly talked about hockey (Lindenwood, Maryville, Tennessee State, Liberty, High Point Univ, et al) finally get in the game.

Lindenwood has always been the most likely of any of them.

We already knew this but "official" announcement tomorrow.

LIU, Augustana, Lindenwood, St. Thomas. Not exactly big money powerhouses in athletics. Maybe you don't need a bazillion dollars to get off the ground like so many people like to spew. And maybe, just maybe this will be a growing trend. Certainly looks that way to me. When's the last period of growth like this for D1 hockey? And yes I realize the difficulties for Alaska and UAH.

Um, yes. UST is a massive big money powerhouse. They just offered to buy a golf course for $61+ million just for a place to build future athletic facilities. They have an endowment of over a half billion dollars.

I just meant in regard to big time athletics. Are LIU, Augustana and Lindenwood all loaded too? I was comparing them to the likes of Arizona State and Penn State starting programs. Overall point, I don't think it's as difficult as many lead you to believe.
