Lest We Forget

I cannot think of a better way for me to mark my 2500th post than by paying tribute to all those who gave their lives in defense of the freedoms that we enjoy today.

Whether you mark Veterans Day or Remembrance Day, I hope that you took time at the 11th hour to remember.

I thought of my uncle, Signalman Percy Jack Thomas (age 20), who went down with all hands when HMCS Raccoon was torpedoed in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on Sept. 7, 1942.

Re: Lest We Forget

I'm in the process of reading all the WWII Medal Of Honor Citations. I'd say over half were killed during their heroic act or soon afterwards. The ones that move me the most are the ones where the fellow jumps on a grenade to absorb the blast to save his fellow soldiers. I recall 1 guy actually lived through his jump on the grenade incident. Talk about the ultimate sacrifice. Words can't express the gratitue I have for all our veterans.

Re: Lest We Forget

I've posted before about the time years ago when my brother and I were driving around Phoenix and saw a guy with a light blue license plate. When we got close enough, we saw that it was a Medal of Honor plate, number 001. We wondered how many living winners there were in AZ at the time. He may have been the only one. While I'm humbled by the exploits of the guys who've been awarded the Medal of Honor, let's not forget the millions who have served honorably, all of whom have made sacrifices to do so.

As an Army veteran, thank you for starting this thread!

Re: Lest We Forget

Thanks to you servicemen and servicewomen for defending the best dam country in the world.

Special thanks to my cousin, who joined the Navy about 3 months before 9-11, fresh out of high school, (whoops, so to speak) and just got out this past summer to get married and start a family.

Re: Lest We Forget

This Veterans Day , let us not forget:

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag and whose coffin is draped by the flag who allows the demonstrators to burn our flag. (Author unknown)

Thank you to all those that have and are currently serving this great country.
