Left or right leaning east coast colleges and universities

Hopefully this topic can be civil and not polarizing, for those out east who hopefully can be objective - which colleges/universities are quite liberal and which are middlin and which are more to the right?

From an overall feeling on campus and the schools point of view.

Re: Left or right leaning east coast colleges and universities

OK, I will jump in.

One the low end 95% of any US four year school will be liberal to very, very, very liberal. The only one that I know of that has any core common sense is Hillsdale College in Michigan and there is no hockey there yet.

One way to gauge the campus atmosphere is to look at the curriculum for majors and the elective courses. Some of these colleges will never leave the 60s and the modern re-incarnations at other schools are comprehensive. Courses can range from weird to completely disgraceful. Tacking on to this topic are the post-election polls of how campus faculties voted and where they gave their money for candidates. Those news stories are very available in the public domain.

If there is parental concern about politics on campus it is very unlikely it will affect the hockey experience. The affects will be felt in the classroom.

Transaltion for anyone outside the U.S.: "liberal to very, very, very liberal" means more or less middle of the road everywhere else.

Bingo!

Re: Left or right leaning east coast colleges and universities

This question reeks (sp?) of overcontrolling parents attempting to shield their kid from alternative viewpoints. Regardless, it has nothing to do with hockey.

BTW - all of us Easterners are communists or socialists and you should stay away.

Fantasy league conservative vs. liberal matchup would pit Brigam Young vs. U Cal Berkeley but neither has womens' hockey that I'm aware of. So here's info gathered from both the 2012 Newsweek/College Prowler "Liberal" College list and the Newsweek/College Prowler "Conservative" college list. In tournament form, Liberal vs Conservative, it goes: Northeast Regional #11 Wesleyan vs #24 Providence. Southeast Regional #19 Vermont vs #89 Bethel. Southwest Regional #23 Brown vs #115 Concordia (WI). And Northwest Regional #132 Carleton vs #144 Holy Cross.

You should have included this school in one of your fantasy league matchups:

Re: Left or right leaning east coast colleges and universities

What a silly topic!!

All these schools are controlled by a small minority of what passes for the Education "Establishment" these days...U know, the same folks who scream for "Diversity" in every convievable way possible.....except of course when it comes to brainwashing your children with liberal BS.....Funny but "Diversity" apparently doesn't translate to these jokers when it comes to political diversity and exposing your child to different viewpoints....since 99% of the Univ Establishment is Liberal Democrat/Communist...and 1% or less could be called "Conservative"....It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

Absolutely correct in every sense.

Re: Left or right leaning east coast colleges and universities

You've touched on a topic that is very personal to me, as I attended Boston College assuming it would be a place defined by traditional values and the Truth as presented by the Catholic Church. Unfortunately, my experience was beyond disappointing and was in fact downright horrifying.

While on campus, I met people who believed all manner of crazy heresies: that Nate Silver's polling aggregations were a reliable predictor of the 2012 election results; that Barack Obama actually won the state of Ohio rather than having it stolen for him by ACORN; that the earth's temperature is increasing; and that there's reasonable evidence to suggest that earth is more than 6,000 years old. They also described communism in pretty extensive detail in history and political science classes and yet what they called "communism" had little resemblance to the policies of the Democratic party in the United States. So obviously it was a bunch of lies.

It's bad news, really. There's almost no hope, at this point, of getting anything resembling the Truth in your typical American university. Your best bet would probably be to contact some of the better madrassas.

Right back at you HockeyEast33. You Easterners aren't the only commy Blue State liberals out there (Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois are all Blue States too). Hockey is pretty much a Blue State sport so the Neocons and Tea Partiers should stay away from Minny too.

Re: Left or right leaning east coast colleges and universities

Good luck finding a “right” leaning hockey school, actually good luck finding any “right” leaning school outside of a few very specific, religious based institutions period. That being said my D and many of the girls she has played with have a more rounded, balanced view point compared to their teachers. Part of this comes from the prep school she attended and part probably from her parents. Others could be attributed to hockey being a middle to upper middle class sport and much of the household influence that brings. My D’s team did a mock election and their outcome was opposite of what occurred back in November. She enjoys her political science classes but she goes into every class with her eyes wide open.

Sorry, I forgot Wisconsin. UW was and is a bastion of liberalism. Wisconsin is the birthplace of the Republican party but that was back when the Republican party was a progressive movement.

I think what you say is somewhat true. I'm not so sure that affluence alone is an indicator of someone's political leanings. Hilary Clinton was a product of an affluent Republican family. Here are some facts that might seem contradictory in the recent election. The majority of the college educated voted for Romney but the majority of people with post-graduate degrees voted for Obama. States with higher percentage of educated people voted for Obama but states with higher percentages of minorities voted for Romney. Basically I'm saying that people just need to send their kids to school to get a good education. They will find their own place on the political spectrum. My parents are hardcore right wingers that are comfortable but I wouldn't classify them as affluent and they didn't go to college. I on the other hand have an advanced degree and have had some success and lean left. I don't know where my child will end up politically but I want her to get a good education and I trust her to make good decisions regardless of her politics.

This pretty much sums up my feelings on the topic.
