This season has been my least attentive to D-III hockey to date. Any thoughts on the Laura Hurd nominees and favorites?

This season has been my least attentive to D-III hockey to date. Any thoughts on the Laura Hurd nominees and favorites?

It's usually won by a senior who is player of the year in their conference.

Top seniors this year: For forwards there's Carly Moran of UWRF, Melissa Sheeran of Plattsburgh, Sarah Bobrowski or Darby Dodds of Hamline, Olivia Spellmire of Lake Forest, Sarah Hughson of Elmira, Bek Lucas of Neumann, Kaitlyn Klein of GAC, Alex Toupal of Amherst and Jessica Young of Middlebury. Defensemen (only one D has won before so unlikely): Kasandra Peterson of Chatham and Kristi Zink of Adrian. Goalies (only 2 goalies have won): Sam Walther of Hamilton, Brooke Wolejko of Plattsburgh, Kelcey Crawford of Elmira and there's also Angie Hall who took the career wins mark but her single season metrics aren't great.

I don't think any of the defensemen or goalies win, if I had to choose a favorite from that group alone I'd guess Walther. I would love to see Sheeran take it given the body of work over her career but I'm not sure she takes 17-18 POY for the NEWHL over Plattsburgh junior Courtney Moriarty. Lucas has been an outstanding forward who would be a lot more acclaimed if she played for a better school. Carly Moran was the senior leading a lot of the offensive categories early on this season. I'm not sure Toupal or Young can climb over the aforementioned players. Kaitlyn Klein would be the feel good story considering how she came back from a catastrophic injury in late 2015 to become GAC's leading forward.

The picture will clear up when the POY awards come from the conferences.

Re: Laura Hurd Award

Turns out most of these are out already.

2017-18 Players of the Year:

NESCAC - Sam Walther, G, Sr, Hamilton
UCHC - Sarah Hughson, F, Sr, Elmira
CHC - Tess Adams, F, Jr, Canton
NEHC - Amanda Conway, F, So, Norwich
MIAC - Allison Borgstrom, F, Sr, St. Thomas
NCHA - Olivia Spellmire, F, Sr, Lake Forest

Only conferences left are WIAC and NEWHL. I think it will be Moran of UWRF for WIAC and either Moriarty or Sheeran of Plattsburgh for the NEWHL.

Re: Laura Hurd Award

WIAC Awards are out, and as expected senior UWRF forward Carly Moran is the WIAC Player of the Year. Now waiting on the NEWHL.

The NEWHL selections are finally out. I see they named a Goalkeeper of the Year, with Rookie, Player, and Coach of the year coming next week (Monday - Wednesday)...

If we're rewarding a career, I think it has to be Sheeran. If we're rewarding a season, Courtney Moriarty is having a HELL of a single season right now.

Obviously, all these players have had outstanding careers. Equally obvious is the fact I have no familiarity with the 3 western finalists.
That said, Sheeran gets my vote.
