17 hour bus trip. Yawn.

That is a standard weekend for almost every Junior team.

Most youth travel teams, especially in the UP, make those sorts of trips regularly.

Most AHL team take LONG bus rides

All other minor pro teams take long bus rides.

MOST college programs take lengthy bus rides. As early as about 10 months ago, most WCHA teams were bussing to Houghton -- often 9-10 hour bus rides, in bad weather, from Grand Forks or Mankato or Omaha.

So my suggestion: Go look for problems and concerns someplace else. If you want to be critical of the LSSU program, feel free. But find something legitimate to be critical about. Bus rides aren't a very wounding assault. Its sort of like saying the coach needs to go because of his treatment of a 3rd string goalie. The coach may indeed need to go -- but not because of a 3rd string goalie. Ergo, the program may need to adjust its finances in some areas -- but bus trips are not likely to be the cause of any hand-wringing in the Athletics department.

Meanwhile -- Northern Michigan, with the alleged large budget -- is really thriving in the standings right now, eh?

Please, list all the 17 hour one way bus trips in the AHL. Now I worked at the minor pro level for six seasons. I never had one 17 hour one way trip. Not one. There were some 10 or 11 hour trips, but you also play several teams on those runs and so it may be the long ride one way or the other, but not both. Which AHL teams are making 17 hour bus trips? Utica to Syracuse? Providence to Worcester? Milwaukee to Chicago? Now I've got 11 years of college hockey travel under my belt as well. The longest busser has been 14. And that's going six hours, then spending a hotel night on the way out. 17 hour bus trips? They may happen occasionally. But they are very few and very far between. They happen about as often as a Truth post that's worth reading.

UP Junior teams regularly make 17 hour trips? Really? Which UP Junior teams are playing in Alabama or Wyoming or Arkansas? And there is a huge difference between a 10 or 12 hr trip and one of 17.

How can you compare Northern's result at Huntsville, since they haven't been there yet? But I am pretty they've been to the Joe and the NCAA more recently than we have. It seems to be a pretty well known fact that LSSU was one of the worst funded teams in the CCHA. And we were consistently near the bottom. Gee, I wonder if those are related.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

I'm not finding a trip much long than 8 hours in the BCHL, unless you're going to Prince George. Then add another 3. Nothing over 8 in Alberta either. That's 16 round trip, not one way. The Soo Eagles, their longest bussers, Springfield and Johnstown, each around 12 1/2 to 13 with meal and rest stops.

Northern apologist . . . just stay in Marquette. We know you are only half-heartedly interested in LSSU hockey, and it appears only support the program when its winning.

NMU can rot. And take that cinder-block nightmare Northern passes off as a campus and drop it into the lake.

Ugly school, ugly colors, ugly stadium, and ugly half-hearted fans.

Go Lakers.

No Northern fans allowed.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

Is there really a discussion going on here regarding a 17 hour bus trip in which WE SWEPT THE FREAKING SERIES??????? Who gives a crap whether it was 8, 16, 24 hours long? If LSSU had the top budget in the WCHA, I still wouldn't fly them to Huntsville. Unless its a West Coast trip or Alaska, they can take a sleeper bus. If old, half-crippled people can ride 15 hours from the Sault to Branson, MO and still retain the ability to walk I'm sure a bunch of young, highly-fit athletes can manage. Give me a break.

Saturday is Fan Appreciation Night at the Taffy. $5 tickets and they will be giving away 2 WCHA Final passes.

We can manage those 15 hour trips to Branson because of the good drugs doctors give us once we get old.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

If FOUR teams play THREE games, why is it called the Final FIVE?

I was also confused by that. I read the tournament info three or four times to make sure I wasn't misunderstanding it. I'm excited about the tournament format though. It ought to be a little more suspenseful than the CCHA tournament. I like that the bottom rung is cut from the playoffs. Especially in a season like this, even the number one matchup is not a gimme.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

Perhaps the WCHA will have FIVE teams again in the WCHA Final FIVE once they have 12 teams in the league.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

I think the WCHA Final Five name is a relic of the old WCHA League Playoff format. There were 6 teams playing 5 games over 3 days. So the "Five" refers to the number of games played. The bottom 4 seeds played each other the first day in #5 vs #4 and #6 vs #3 games. The winners went on the play the #1 and #2 seeds the next day (with re-seeding if necessary) in the semifinals. And the winners played for the title on the last day. I don't know why they decided to carry over the same name for the tournament in the new WCHA given that there are now 4 teams playing 3 games (semifinals and final). Couldn't bear to do away with the old name I guess. Doesn't make much sense.

Commissioner McLeod told me they chose to keep the Final Five branding in hopes that it will return to a five team format in the future. Final Four and Frozen Four were not options, even if designated "WCHA." So they opted to stick with the brand much like the soon to be 14 team Big Ten or a ten team Big 12.

How dare someone confuse the issue with the use of fact! Feeling a bit insecure because someone called your BS. The bus they took was hardly luxury. We underfund the program year in and year out yet there are those who think it's still 1994. Lakerblue, how old were you the last time we were winners? Ever make it as a player coach or administrator above peewee? Yet you know how a D-I program should be run. Oh, I've been to Branson. Took my parent on a bus tour out of Green Bay about 4-5 years ago. Stopped and spent the night in a hotel near Chicago on the way. Big difference in riding down, checking into a hotel and going for dinner, drinks and a show and playing a D-1 hockey game. Just curious, what's the longest hockey trip you've been on before playing? Likely street hockey in front of your house.

Any good ideas for hotel rooms in the soo... proximity to the arena and/or bar scene would be a plus (guess there is always the kewadin and cabs). Any places to eat worth mentioning?? Having never been to the arena, is there any advice on the seating(what section and/or row is best to be looking for)?? Thanks for your time. Looking forward to road tripping to the soo in January.

holiday Inn is right by the arena, Ramada downtown. No matter where you stay, it's a cheap cab ride

I'd recommend staying downtown. That way during the day you are walking distance from a number of good places to eat and have a beverage. The Palace is good. So is Moloney's. There isn't much by the arena.

Cool. I'll save myself $7. I'm heading up to the Soo in the morning for our final home series. At least the worst of the cold weather sounds like it will be tonight.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

Congratulations to Kevin Kapalka for getting WCHA Defensive Player of the Week!

He looked good, but ... DPoW against a UAH team that struggles to score more than a goal a game? Of course, the WCHA PoW stuff is ridiculous (as it usually is).

Yeah I checked the forecast and it's supposed to be -27 tonight. High of 6 tomorrow. Low of 5 tomorrow night with a few inches of snow. High of 9 Saturday and low of -11 Saturday night. I'm bringing my cross country skis and will go out skiing for an hour or so on Saturday to warm up.

I don't miss those days of bitter cold and snow at all. I still have family in the Soo and Marquette and they can keep that weather.
