Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

17 hour bus trips don't exactly do wonders for the legs. And before a google mapster says it's "only" 14:47, don't forget to add meal and rest stops.
The thing is we pretty much dominated each game, carrying the play and easily getting the most scoring chances, but we had trouble finishing (scoring). We didn't play "tired".

We've had trouble "finishing" all season. They are going to need to figure it out quick or they won't survive the next 2 weeks.

When I was commenting about the series with Ferris the other day I was kind of getting at the same sentiment as this. We had the majority of the scoring opportunities that series, but its not reflected in the results because we failed to finish the play over and over again in heartbreaking fashion. Ferris on the other hand made a lot with very few chances. To some extent I think this is a confidence issue. We have a culture of losing that goes beyond the team and the coach. It's like watching the Lions, you always know they'll find a way to take themselves out of contention, and somehow you keep watching. I have more hope for Lake State than the Lions though. We may not make much of this season, but with 4 games left we could finish anywhere from third to ninth. Which means we're in just the same position as pretty much everyone else in the WCHA. I'm not apologizing for the team, but sweeping UAH just makes it clear that things could be a lot worse here.

Time for Jim Roque to show whether he deserves to come back next season or not. If the Lakers don't win at least two of out of their last four games, I don't think he should come back.

The team's record has improved this year despite losing it's leading scorer to graduation, two key players to NHL contracts and losing its #1 goalie for half the year. I'm struggling to find real negatives here. I'm not a Roque fan. If this supposed new money for recruiting is for real, it'll take a few years to show up in the win column. The fact that the Lakers are over .500 right now is a real positive.

Sure, their record is better than last season at this point, but it's pretty much on the sames pace as their record two season's ago. It looks like you are cherry picking and only only using last season for comparison. They have four games to go yet to try and make the playoffs, which is still far from certain. Finish strong and they might beat their record from two seasons ago. Finish weakly and their record may wind up close to that of last season.

How has the record improved from last season if this season is not over yet. If the Lakers don't win a game against their last two opponents ,they still finish below 500 . The fact they are in a much weaker league this year over the last couple decades doesn't impress me either. The same second half collaspe doesn't show me where they have improved as the collaspe this time has come in a much weaker league. I don't understand this I am not a Roque supporter but yet defending him over and over says different. When the actual season is over, maybe we will know if they are better or worse.

KK = Wins.

Its coming . . . .

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

The next two weekends will be a better test of that.

Two best teams in the WCHA.

Mankato has a first line as good as any in college hockey.
Ferris, at home, is a machine.

It'll be KK and 40-shots-against, per night.

We will need KK to be amazing, and we need to score on the PP to survive.

But we can do it.

Bemidji State will most likely pass the Lakers this week with a sweep of UAH. I project a split between NMU/BGSU & Ferris/UAF which means LSSU will need to take 1 of 2 this weekend to have a decent shot at the playoffs. LSSU currently holds the tiebreaker edge over everyone except Michigan Tech and Bemidji if a tie were to occur (not counting the top 2 of course).

Coach Roque, as he has done the past 9 seasons, will get the players fired up for both nights, and his teams will end the year, much stronger than they started. They should win all four of these games, get a top 4 finish, and an NCAA birth. You people that predicted that, again, this season are brilliant. If not, it because of all his best players being gone and people hurt, because LSSC is the only team that happens too in college hockey, and that isn't fair!!!

Year 9 will be the best year for Lake Superior under this coach. If not Year 10 will, or 11, or 12!!!

LOL. Truthless Pony sounds a little discouraged after the LSSU sweep last weekend.

At least we finally got our Alabama points. No disrespect to UAH, but until they get competitive(hopefully in the next couple years) they add a lot of wierdness to our rankings. Basically if your team got two series with UAH you got atleast 2 nearly free points. Given that Ferris,MSU, and UAH are the only teams not splitting practically every series. If your team got a single series with UAH and two series with Ferris then you're on the bubble to make the playoffs. I wouldn't call it unfair, its just the nature of scheduling, but there's no denying its a factor. I think we played some good games this season with a tough schedule. This conference is weaker than the CCHA, but our schedule wasn't soft. We played some quality opponents Union, Ferris,Wisconsin,Notre Dame. We also stunk it up in some games that should have been winnable. If Lake State can play some quality hockey these last couple weeks, I could still be proud of this season. And if they fall apart its a total loss, and another failing season.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

At which point the question would become: Will the administration make a coaching change?

And then the question would be will the administration offer the coaches and assistants salaries that would put them on equal footing with the rest of the league and offer the money for travel, recruiting and equipment that other schools have? It's a joke that they had to bus 17 hours to Huntsville while NMU, which is only 30 miles farther flies. If they choke this away, its probably time to end the Roque era. But we have to give a good coach the resources to win.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

17 hour bus trip. Yawn.

That is a standard weekend for almost every Junior team.

Most youth travel teams, especially in the UP, make those sorts of trips regularly.

Most AHL team take LONG bus rides

All other minor pro teams take long bus rides.

MOST college programs take lengthy bus rides. As early as about 10 months ago, most WCHA teams were bussing to Houghton -- often 9-10 hour bus rides, in bad weather, from Grand Forks or Mankato or Omaha.

So my suggestion: Go look for problems and concerns someplace else. If you want to be critical of the LSSU program, feel free. But find something legitimate to be critical about. Bus rides aren't a very wounding assault. Its sort of like saying the coach needs to go because of his treatment of a 3rd string goalie. The coach may indeed need to go -- but not because of a 3rd string goalie. Ergo, the program may need to adjust its finances in some areas -- but bus trips are not likely to be the cause of any hand-wringing in the Athletics department.

Meanwhile -- Northern Michigan, with the alleged large budget -- is really thriving in the standings right now, eh?
