Fricker,no one is saying bring in a top money coach. After 9 years it is apparent Roques coaching is not making a better team or improving players. You can't change the whole team and so you do what you can. Get a new coach with a different coaching style and hope he wants to win and has a smart game plan to put out on the ice every game.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

The old saying, "ya get what ya pay for" unfortunately, applies to Jim Roque. He is an "adequate" or "good" Head Coach, but not a higher level D1 Coach. Lake State can't or won't pay a big time money to bring in a big time coach so must do with Coach Roque. There's nothing wrong with that - just bite the bullet and accept it. A HC like Roque highly depends on recruiting assistants to drag blue chippers to the Soo to see the program and meet Coach Roque to close the deal. Unfortunately, compared to Minny, ND's (Notre Dame & North Dakota), MSU, and, of course, the Wolverines without even looking back East, the Lake state "scene" falls short and too many blue chippers say "thanks, but no thanks" and move on. The days of a hi-pot prospect (Brian Rolston) chosing Lake State in part cuz his older brother (Ron) is a Lake State assistant are long gone.................

At this point we all understand the HC money situation and the get what you pay for. No sense in beating a dead horse.

So what kind of money is he getting?
How far off what top HC's get is he?
Small market, so if you fill the building and shovel every last dime to the HC can you compete pay wise?
We couldn't.

He is locked into a 3 or 4 year contract and it must be worth about 130k a year, with his stature in the coaching community, around that town, and his track record. Year 9 will be the best year yet for Lake Superior under Jim Roque. Just you people wait and see!!!

That is a bargain! Jim Roque deserves a raise and another contract extension.

wow. last time I checked in on this thread (about 10 months ago)--this same conversation was going on. does it ever end? #creepy #tapeloop #groundhogday #twilightzone

anyway, on a better note: kudos to all the LSSU fans who showed up at BGSU ice arena last week. according to my extremely unofficial tally, LSSU has had the biggest visiting turnout of the season in BG. so far. which isn't saying that much: it's the new WCHA. but still, points to the LSSU faithful.

Winning Fall: Few Posts.

Losing January: Many Posts.

That's a sad state of affairs, and it has nothing to do with coaches, coach's pay, or third string keepers.

For one thing, losing does tend to bring out more action from the resident trolls. Beyond that, you have to expect the continuing saga of second half slides to bring coaching into question. As to why there weren't more 1st half posts, who knows. Maybe many of our fans have had enough of Roque as coach and withdrawn from the forum (or reduced their participation). Maybe they were expecting this season's second half to be like many of the past ones and were reluctant to get their hopes up too high. Maybe they needed the Lakers to "show them the money" before they were willing to believe this season would be different. There is still time left to see if it will be different, but not much. Winning at least 7 or 8 of the remaining 10 games would help.

The conversation will end when Coach Jim Roque gets his walking papers.

No it won't.

If whoever you hire to replace him fails to win a title within 3 years, you guys will start the bickering all over again.

Neither Jeff Jackson nor Ron Mason are coming back.

No, the couple helmet kids that constantly repeat the same drivel over and over again will go away once the coach that took away their Division 3-caliber 4th liner's playing time is gone. And the other one will likely be banned again soon.

Whats wrong with bickering about a coach who in 9 years has proven if he had 100 years there as coach he would still not win a tournament or a top four finish. Are you saying we should just like the coach and that is how it works. So all the coaches out there in every sport that get fired never should be fired. What do you want us to smile about ? Another second half collaspe ? Tell us what we need to talk about . A offense that can't score . A defense that gives up way too many shots over the course of the season. Please guide us with your thoughts on what we should talk about and what we should not discuss . Should we be like you and just roll over if a coach is not improving the game or players. Please tell us.

Jim Roque has been locked up and has signed a long term extension up at that college and Year 9 will be the best year Lake Superior has under his leadership!!

Great weekend of hockey last weekend.

I wish we didn't split. Hoping to be home for the playoffs. To many collapses after Christmas. Maybe next year when the team goes to Canada things will change and form team bond and win for Coach Roque. Something has to change like inviting Canada. fans free tickets to LSSU games and maybe they will buy nachos.

Year 10 will be even better than year 9 for Lake Superior under Coach Roque!!

Jeff Jackson has been at Notre Dame now 8 years, and they have yet to win the NCAA title.

Since Jim Roque has been coach, Jeff Jackson has 2 regular season titles, 3 conference championships, and 5 NCAA tourney appearances (2nd & 3rd place finish) with ND. No one would be complaining if Jim Roque had those stats. Pick another example please....

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

Tech beat BG tonight to pull ahead of us in the standings. UAF is likely to do the same at home against UAH.

Thank you I could not have put it better.

All that is great, but at the end of the year the season is a failure for all 58 teams that do not win a national title. A conference championship is the same as winning a division in football. If you win your division, but don't win the Super Bowl, the season is not a success in my opinion.

Jackson is proving that he cannot win a national championship by building a team himself. It is becoming more evident that his championships at LSSU were based on what Anzalone built. Anzalone is still the only coach that has been able to build the Lakers into a winning team.

If Roque was the coach at Notre Dame, with those resources, I am sure he would have been capable of winning a couple CCHA titles, and gaining a few NCAA tournament births.

Jackson is a large part of the reason why the Lakers program is where it is at today. He saw that the wheels were coming off and bailed ship when he could. He was also confident that Borek would fail, and that is why he pushed to have Borek take over in 97.
