Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

Projected Lakers Remaining Games' Results
Jan. 10 Bemidji State W
Jan. 11 Bemidji State W
Jan. 17 at Notre Dame W
Jan. 18 at Notre Dame L
Jan. 24 at Bowling Green State W
Jan. 25 at Bowling Green State L
Feb. 7 Alaska Anchorage T
Feb. 8 Alaska Anchorage W
Feb. 14 at Northern Michigan W
Feb. 15 at Northern Michigan T
Feb. 21 at Alabama-Huntsville W
Feb. 22 at Alabama-Huntsville W
Feb. 28 Minnesota St.-Mankato W
Mar. 1 Minnesota St.-Mankato L
Mar. 7 at Ferris State W
Mar. 8 at Ferris State L

Completely speculative, but we for sure need 3 points vs Bemidji and a sweep of UAH. We should also take 3pts against NMU and Alaska-Anchorage. This schedule favors us significantly as far as getting into a position for home ice for playoffs. We can't let it slip away like year's past.

Good site for playing out scenarios on how the league will shape up: http://siouxsports.com/hockey/whatif/.

My expectations for the 2nd half are pretty well equal to what you have posted here. My only difference is I have them splitting with Tech.

You right about the Lakers splitting with Tech. Hopefully we are both right about the Lakers sweeping Bemidji this weekend.

I hope we are both right about them being able to sweep Bemidji as well. I am not so sure they deserve a top 4 finish if they can not take care of business at home this weekend.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

Out of 7 WCHA home series this season, we've now played 4 and are at a .500 level. It's pretty unlikely that we can get a top 4 finish unless we do a better job winning at home. We have 3 more home series. I'd like to see us win at least 5 of the remaining 6 home games. If we do that and continue to split on the road, we have a decent shot at a top 4 finish.

On the coaches show Jim said the Lakers have no plans to play over the Christmas break next season. I was incorrect about the Canadian trip.

He also said there are a lot of long trips next season including Alaska, Alaska-Anchorage, Mankato, Alabama-Huntsville, and North Dakota.

I. would like to see the Sioux play in the Soo.

*face palm*

At least Ferris helped us by beating Tech but we can't count on other teams helping us in the standings. Lakers need to come out aggressive and hungry for 60 minutes tomorrow and win. Hopefully Kapalka's injury isn't too serious.

Bemidji was 0-4-4 in their last 8 games and they come out and produce a decisive 5-2 victory on LSSU's ice. Games like this simply cannot happen.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

Yep, the Lakers laid an egg. Special team play was huge. Not a lot of penalties, but Bemidji scored on their 1st 3 power plays , Boom, Boom, Boom, and the Lakers struggled to even get a shot on goal on their 2 power plays. A ton of turnovers by the Lakers, some forced but many unforced, both by the D and the forwards. After getting their 1st goal, Bemidji as a team played with more energy and outskated the Lakers. The only Laker line that was able to generate some occasional offensive pressure was the top line and even they didn't generate many good scoring chances. The other lines were dangerous a couple of times but didn't generate and sustain any pressure. We had a lot of shots on goal but many were from far out and the Bemidji goalie had good looks at them. Not enough traffic in front of the Bemidji goalie. Bemidji did a much better job of creating traffics in front of our goalies. Kind of looked like Kapalka might have injured his groin but that's just a guess. Doesn't seem likely he will dress tomorrow unless it turns out to be something less serious than it looked. It also hurt that Dommett was out with an injury. He's one of our best skaters and face off men.

Agreed especially regarding traffic in front of the goalies. Laker need to crash the net more tomorrow and create havoc for the Bemidji goalie. Lakers need to do a better job in front of Murdock as well. PK needs to do a lot better tomorrow or else we will lose. I doubt Kaps will dress tomorrow but hopefully he'll be back for the Notre Dame series.

Injuries are definitely hurting the Lakers right now, but no excuses, the Lakers just looked flat tonight.

I think staying out of holiday tournaments is the way to go. Gives the team time to heal and allows them to spend time with family . If not playing 2 more games during the schedule makes or breaks how the team plays, the team is in bad shape. Players can still condition during the break.

Playing in Grand Forks is the same as going to a tournament. It means big bucks for LSSU.

****!!

At least on the bright side, the Lakers are just four points behind 4th place Bemidji and we have two games in hand of them. Unfortunately we need to start sweeping more series to make a serious run at home ice. If we get swept at BGSU, 9th place might be breathing at our necks. The offense needs to score WAAAY more. The Lakers have scored two or fewer goals 4 out of the last 5 games. That isn't going to win games.

Unfortunately Northern is just 1 point behind the Lakers with 4 fewer games played.

Luckily NMU has got a tough schedule coming up. After next weekend they play in Anchorage, play Mankato, and then travel to Ferris. Then we play them in Marquette. Lakers need to take care of their business though. Lakers offense laid an egg this weekend. PP is a major concern.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

The Lakers played much better tonight, especially for the first half of the game. But much like last night, once Bemidji scored their first goal, it energized them and they took over the game. Taking 4 penalties in a row in the latter half of the 2nd period (with the last carrying over into the 3rd), obviously hurt the Lakers tremendously.

For me at least, there's no sense in talking any more about getting home ice for the 1st round of the WCHA playoffs, at least for the foreseeable future. Unless this team can somehow regain its scoring touch, the question now is can they make the playoffs at all. That is no longer certain. Maybe they can find some spark at Notre Dame next week, although that will be a tough job. That's followed by a tough road series at BG, who will be looking for revenge. If the Lakers don't play well there, they could very well return home 4 games below .500 in the WCHA and in a tailspin.

Hopefully Kaps gets healed up soon. I would guess he won't play the Notre Dame or Bowling Green series, but I haven't heard how bad Kevin pulled his groin. Hopefully Radke and Dommett will be back next weekend.

With Kaps, I think it's his hip. I think there is some concern that he could be done for the season, although it may be too early to tell. The last I heard, they hope Radke will be back next weekend. Dommett hurt his back in practice; I haven't heard how bad or when he might be back.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

When was the last time the Lakers had a feared power play? In the era of National Championships, what kind of PP percentage did we enjoy? To my way of thinking, pp performance has to be a key ingredient of the making of a national power Any comments?

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

Deja Vu anyone..... The annual Laker Hockey free fall has now commenced. Let's face it until there are some upper level admin changes nothing will change with Laker Hockey. I have been to two games this year and listen to the rest. Its the same excuse(s) week over week. Well to reduce my stress I will not listen or go to anymore games for the rest of the season. I had it. Let me know when the AD grows a pair
