Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

It would probably be easier to talk about match ups and other more direct hockey issues if the team weren't so predictable in recent years. It kind of boils down to this: fair to good first half of the season performance, then go into a slide the second half of the season. And this season there is even the Friday-Saturday contrast. With a few exceptions we play well on Fridays (10-3-1) and crappy on Saturdays (3-11). So any thoughts of how well we may match up against opponents and how that may affect any given series gets trumped by what day of the weekend it is and based upon that how well we're likely to play. It is what it is. I think most fans are tired of it and want a change. They see the overall talent level increasing in recent years but the overall results (W vs L and league standings) aren't breaking the pattern. While there is still time this season to break the pattern, it would probably come as a surprise to most Laker fans it that occurs.

As far as re-hashing the Anzalone firing goes, a new poster asked what happened to cause the firing. Sure I guess we could have ignored him/her, but how does that make us look.

Very true with a capital T.

I guess I didn't realise just how much there was with the Anzalone situation. Thank you for your replies and I apoligise disturbed any hornet's nests.

On a different note, is anybody else making the jaunt to Marquette this weekend? Last year, there was a decent showing of Lakers, but Northern was also on Spring Break during the games.

That pattern says that there are conditioning problems in addition to strategy ones. I've seen that one before at UAH.

We've speculated about that from time to time. I don't think that's really the problem. When we win on Friday, we just don't seem to match the opposition's passion and intensity the following night. They play harder because they don't want to get swept, and we have trouble matching their effort. And for whatever reason, we just have a problem scoring on Saturday's, putting more pressure on our D and goaltending.

Its a pattern in which I would tend to agree.

I also think there is another certain something to be considered -- making adjustments as the season moves along. Teams don't exist in a vacuum. Video is available, scouting reports are available. Coaches prepare and alter strategy to fit their team and their opponent. The best coaches make these adjustments as the season moves along, or are perhaps just better at making the adjustments.

Figures to be low scoring games this weekend. Northern doesn't give up a lot of goals, but doesn't score a lot either. It will be important to get the lead on them, especially since we're playing in their barn. We can't afford anything less than a split.

I think that it's very likely that teams solve LSSU based on early-season film of what they're having success with. If you're not improving as the season goes on, you're backing up.

Lakers beat NMU 5-3

Shots on goal: LSSU 38, NMU 35

12 different Lakers with at least 1 point

Lakers now are a perfect 5-0 in league play on the road on Fridays but 0-4 in WCHA play on the road on Saturdays. Lakers sure could use their first WCHA league road win on Saturdays tomorrow! I heard on the broadcast that Kevin Kapalka is close to coming back which is great news.

I think he'll play as soon as he tells Roque he feels ready to play, which I expect will be next weekend.

I was away from home and missed almost all of the game. Did it sound like we played pretty well, or did we just have a lot of puck luck?

It sounded like we played pretty well except for the first ten minutes of the game when we were down 2-0 and a five minute stretch of the 2nd period. I know Crawford said Murdock didn't have a chance on two of the goals. I think Loesch screened Murdock on the 2nd NMU goal.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

I was at the game and I thought we did a good job staying together when down 2-0. NMU didn't get many good chances after that. I'm pretty sure the coach gets no credit for the win, but if NMU comes back and gets a split, all the negative Nelly's will be out in force!

Truth.

This is where a coach has to show class. The game is over and your goalie is just running up horrible numbers on his stats and you don't play a guy who has been there for 4 years of horrible Laker hockey . Allow your backup goalie to have some playing time. My god. The game is over and the goalie you have in is just running up more horrible numbers for himself. I just don't see any class with this coach .

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

I was at tonight's game. The defense let Murdock out to dry on most of the NMU goals. Lakers need to sweep next weekend. Even a win and a tie would be a failure.

The common idiot may call it a thirdstringer issue, when it is fact a #1 coaching shortcoming on a very long list.
Respect and loyalty are key success factors on a team, and you get what you teach.
What matters to Roque is preventing Ravn from playing a single minute making sure he doesn't appear on any gamesheet, because he wouldn't have a blank season anymore. Murdock's numbers or self confidence, the team's momentum, and the fan's frustration are just not in the scope.

19.5/20 chances we can cheer next weekend !

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

No guts no glory . Your number one goalie is out and the number two goalie running up horrible numbers on his weekend play. Eight goals again Murdock gave up for the weekend. Ravn sitting on the bench and you don't see if maybe on a Saturday he may give the team some drive to play harder to protect him a bit better than they do Murdock or Kapalka. Lakers need goals on Saturday and Roque keeps playing Ciotti who could not score on a soccer net. No guts no glory.

So exactly when as a coach do you say to your team, "I give up?" Murdock was a big factor in the LSSU win on Friday and got hung out by his teammates on Saturday. As a coach, do you risk turning a 5-1 game into 7-1 or 8-1?

As far as Ciotti goes, he played pretty well both nights. I'm not sure I understand the desire to bench a kid who has double digit points playing 4th line. His numbers are quite comparable to a lot of other players in that position in the league. His line was the only one NMU didn't score on last night.
