Lake State Hockey 2022-23

The number of players leaving is just the way things worked with class dynamics. Probably not a bad thing this year.

I think they will definitely look at the portal, but I'd be surprised if they picked up more than 1 or 2 guys from it (unless they also lose a couple of underclassmen to it). Maybe they won't pick up anyone from it. I think all the Laker players currently in the portal are getting their degrees this Spring, and LSSU doesn't have graduate programs, so they are looking to move on as grad transfers. There always could be some unexpected additions to the portal from underclassmen.

Whitten has repeatedly said he wants his team to play with pace and be hard to play against. I don't think he will change from that philosophy but will need to tweak it based upon what players he has. I don't subscribe to Flo Hockey but did see the Lakers play in person a half dozen games this season. From what I saw, I didn't think their skating was keeping pace with other teams compared to recent years. They did lose a couple of their best skaters from the previous season and that hurt them. They also turned the puck over way too often, especially in their own end, which I think made things look worse from a skating standpoint. I think they need to upgrade their skating both at forward and at defense.

I know when Tech has played LSSU, Dirk and Joe both said they are slow games.

Not having grad programs really hurts LSSU on many levels, especially hockey right now with the COVID year/portal.

Nice to see Scott Borek coach Merrimack to the NCAA tournament. He has done a great job there. It's too bad things didn't work out for him for the Lakers.

Agree, it is good to see Scott make it to the tournament. His first couple of years at Merrimack were rough. It seems that he has it going now. Hope he can keep it up.

I saw an article about Scott Borek a year or so ago. In the article, he said his biggest mistake at LSSU was trying to be like Jeff Jackson instead of just being himself.

Looks like a solid pick up. I ramble on here frustrated with getting players that have not done much at the college level then jump schools and the schools just plug them in the line up in high profile spots. I would like to see LSSU do what they just did here get some players that can come in and get better every year and grow within

Should be a lot of new faces in uniform for the Lakers in the Fall. At this point, I think there may be 11 new guys.

Getting word that LSSU will open the 2023-24 season with a series at Michigan State in October.

The Lakers have had quite a few non-conference series at home in October the past couple of seasons. They're due to be on the road more in October; will be interesting to see how the rest of the October schedule shakes out. More scheduling will likely be finalized following the ACHA Convention the latter part of next week.

Any idea what the roster is going to look like next year?

I think it will be something close to this.

Returnees:

Langenegger
Huggins
Williams
Milburn (Connor)
Tritt
Roloson (Brett)
Westcott
Roy
Craft
Wildauer
Hindman
Venegoni
Bakos
Borshyov
Gervais
Posa
Hesse

New Guys:

Piku
Herrington
Milburn (Reagan)
Nemec
Kungle
Hakansson
Conrad
Teleguine
Roloson (Ross)
Levandowski
Schweitzer
Bushy
Batchelder
Blanchett

There evidently are some bigger name programs trying to poach Nemec away from the Lakers, so his roster status might be questionable.

Good to see fresh faces. Hopefully leads to a much stronger year.

There will be a lot of them. The coaches are going to need to do some rebalancing over the next few years to try and get class sizes a little more even. I suspect the portal will come into play towards that end.
