Ken vs. Brad vs. Watson

Re: Ken vs. Brad vs. Watson

Well, that was frustrating. Props to Ken for showing a bit of a sense of humor about it all with his Final Jeopardy answer.

When Ken uncovered the Daily Double, this was the convo:

Alex: "what do you want to do, Ken?"
Ken: "Well, I want to unplug Watson, but I can't so let's make it a true daily double."

That was great.

Almost as funny as his "what is a ho?" answer from his last spell on the show.

Suck it, Tre-bek.
It's worth having Will Ferrell host SNL, just to have more of those sketches. An SNL Celebrity Jeopardy skit with Watson would be genius.

Re: Ken vs. Brad vs. Watson

Someone needs to hire Ken as a PR person. Not only is he very very intelligent (read: a total geek) but he has a personality.

Re: Ken vs. Brad vs. Watson

Watson beaten at Jeopardy. By a Congressman, of all people.

There are a lot of smart people on Capitol Hill. But none of them can claim quite the same brainy bragging rights as Rep. Rush Holt (D-N.J.).

On Monday, Holt beat IBM's super-computer, known as Watson, at a round of "Jeopardy!" at the Liaison Capitol Hill, part of an event organized by IBM.

For those unfamiliar with Watson, the interactive computer contains some of the the most cutting edge information processors in the world, and it recently beat all-time "Jeopardy!" champion Ken Jennings on TV.

To be fair, Holt is not your average congressman, especially not when it comes to trivia. He's a five-time "Jeopardy!" champion and a nuclear physicist, to boot. Nevertheless, Holt said the prospect of facing a computerized opponent was daunting.

Bah. Brad is the all-time Jeopardy champion. Only one person can claim never to have lost a Jeopardy match (that didn't involve an IBM supercomputer), and his name is not Ken Jennings.

I have never lost a Jeopardy match. I'm 0 for 0.

Just guessing here, but surely there were 5 day champs back when there was a limit went on to win the tournament of champions.

There was an Ultimate Tournament of Champions in 2005 where these champions were re-invited. Naturally, they lost.

However, there may have been some retired champions from the Art Fleming version back in the 60's and 70's.

Re: Ken vs. Brad vs. Watson

With the SNL idea, it might be funnier if they have Watson on there, Will Ferrell being all happy, but then Sean Connery institutes a virus or unplugs it.

Re: Ken vs. Brad vs. Watson

We know, from a few posts down. :)

Also, using "politician" in this story is misleading. Rather, Watson lost to a nuclear physicist.
Which is actually kind of surprising. Most nuclear physicists would suck at Jeopardy (I live with one, and therefore know many more as well) - there are far too many pop-culture/literature type questions for hard-core science nerds.

Ferrell asks where he got the virus, Connery says "From your mother last night!" and so on.

Ironically they might have problems with even the science questions. Knowing too much about a subject leads to enough delay that somebody with just the aptly named buzzwords can beat you to the buzzer.

Jeopardy is won by people with very broad, superficial knowledge, confidence, and quickness.

Re: Ken vs. Brad vs. Watson

So it isn't possible for a nuclear physicist to have broad knowledge? He did end up in polictics. I was just saying that he wasn't a normal congressman, he has some intellect. :)

Or some connections, but that's beside the point.

Does anyone remember the "Grand Slam" series on GSN? One thing I noticed is that the Jeopardy contestants typically had problems with the math category, but were still beating out Millionaire contestants on time because they were so used to needing to know the answer within about 4 seconds. Having Watson on that show, however, would just be plain unfair.
