It's Awesome.....

hey jdubbs - you don't see anything odd about calling people who follow their alumni in the pros creeps and you yourself stalk every thread on here "look at me, look at me, look at me!" or "look at us, look at us, minnesota"

No need for hostilities. This is just a message board, and this is just a discussion. I told you I would move my remarks outside your season thread, and I was true to my word.

Civic Pride <> Creepy Ex-Player Fetish

No one is obsessing over ex-college players in the NHL. As fans, you follow someone into the NHL because you've become familiar with them. It doesn't matter what team they're on--you're interested in their success.

I haven't liked the Flyers since the Broad Street Bullies days (1970s), but now that Erik Gustafsson (NMU) is playing for them I kind of hope they win.

I'm sure anyone in this forum can think of players they root for even though they're on teams they generally wouldn't care about. It's not obsession, it's interest, curiosity, pride in someone you've seen succeed at a higher level. You've said as much about your ex-gophers: "It's nice to see former Gophers play well."

Relax, enjoy the hockey and try not to compartmentalize everything, open up and start hoping the Blues can turn things around. There are two Minnesotans on that NHL team. Whoops, Backes went to Mankato...sorry.

What makes this a discussion?

How is civic pride much different than an university pride?

It's Awesome......

...when you aren't trolling.

Re: It's Awesome.....

I just think the extent to which a certain fanbase fawns over ex-players is a little odd. And this is a discussion because I'd like someone to explain it to me. The only rationalization I can think of is it fills the void of not having an NHL team. Is that it?

Now you're thinking like a UW fan (Yikes). Since when does the fact that Backes went to Mankato not make hima Minnesotan?

Is that like Mark Johnson went to UW, so he wasn't born in Minnesota? Or Bob Johnson coached the Badgers after playing for the Gophers, so he's "Badger Bob"???

All makes little sense to me.

There are only 16 states, DC, and 5 provinces that have NHL teams.

If you want to root for an NHL team, and you don't live in one of those 22 locales, then perhaps you choose the team or teams your former college players now play for.

That doesn't seem a stretch, or unusual, or obsessive.

Edit: thank you soh

And this, makes little sense to me...

I'm out.

Re: It's Awesome.....

My NHL team (Blackhawks) are out, so now I'm kind of cheering for St. Louis (Backes) and New Jersey (Ryan Carter.) Why is that creepy?

Not until you start tweeting and posting about it daily, make a name like #NHLUniversity up, and make player jersey avatars.

That's #StalkerUniversity IMO.

Exactly. It's like cheering for kids from your state when they make it to college (or beyond), even when they are not from your own specific town. It's pathetic. :p:D:D

Try to understand it this way. Some people who did not even attend a university somehow grow a fetish for that university's teams. Or, as Uncle Bill would say, "What is Hecuba to him or he to Hecuba . . ."
