  • The USCHO Fan Forum has migrated to a new plaform, xenForo. Most of the function of the forum should work in familiar ways. Please note that you can switch between light and dark modes by clicking on the gear icon in the upper right of the main menu bar. We are hoping that this new platform will prove to be faster and more reliable. Please feel free to explore its features.

Its a shame

I just discovered if you click on the link of the thread from the menu it works, but only after you've going into a thread after the migration.
Once I knew I caught up, I set every thread to read. Then, from now on, whenever something gets added, I can just click on the bolded title, and it goes to the latest unread post.

USCHO should review and index its forum database.

While the board is snappy a majority of the time, I am still running into daily occurrences of threads hanging, or specific pages of threads hanging for minutes. This points to a DB query problem and I am reading that it's likely due to the data conversion from vBulletin to XenForo - the DB schema between the two is considerably different and some queries are likely falling back to performing full-table scans.

Not sure how valuable or valid this observation met be, mainly because of the browser I use, but I also get threads that hang quite often and I started to try something that seems to work. I’m usually on WiFi (on a mobile device) but when a thread hangs, I’ll turn off WiFi which will flip me over to cellular, and the thread begins loading immediately. Then I’ll turn WiFi back on until the next occurrence. Been working quite well as a “solution”.

Why this works, I donno, but it seems to do the trick. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

When you switch to cell, you’re essentially starting a new call to the server.

My trick has generally been to just try the next thread and then come back to the one that's hanging. Second time it will load quickly.
