Looks like the situation with bots is likely back. 16 registered users online but like 24,000 "guests". Can't remember who pointed that out earlier. Russian bot farms probably got back up and running. When they went down things seemed much smoother and faster

Yes, making read access require a registered account would be the fastest way to stem the tide. The rest is all database tweaks, which I doubt whoever is left to manage this place will do.
