It's 106 miles to Chicago: Hosted by Old Pio

Re: It's 106 miles to Chicago: Hosted by Old Pio

You have a reason to be concerned. It's likely a good choice for her to leave Turkey at this point, but which hood/burb of Chicago is she looking at?
Loop, North neighborhoods within the city limits, northwest neighborhoods in the city limits, those are okay. Most of the suburbs are okay. Elgin's east side is awful. Aurora (mostly the heart of the city limits) is Flint/Detroit-looking. The outside edges of Aurora are great though. Joliet is the same as Aurora.

Gary, Hammond, and Calumet City. Awful. Almost as bad as some of the south side of Chicago.

Oh, and Rockford is just terrible too.

If Burd's daughter is looking at the City proper, I'd hazard that she's looking at Near North Side, Lincoln Park, Logan Square, Avondale, North Center, Lakeview (aka Wrigleyville), Uptown, Lincoln Square, Edgewater, Roger's Park, Lincoln Square, North Park, Forest Glen.

If I were a betting man, Lincoln Park, Lakeview, or Logan Square is where she'll land.

My aunt lives in Evanston. I only have visited once or twice as a wee child. That's a decent neighborhood, yeah?

C'mon, Kep. I know we're all jaded from years of sniping at each other, but this is a pretty facetious response to a large number of human victims, even for you.

It's sorta like me telling clients, "Oh, I'm from Detroit" and then having to clarify, "I live in the suburbs. No, I don't have to open carry when I leave my apartment."

Andersonville. She likes the neighborhood. But then, she lived in Washington Heights Manhattan for a while during college, so Andersonville probably seems pretty tame to her. It seemed like a nice neighborhood to me.

And it's not white, 25-year old employed women who are getting killed in numbers in Chicago. If they were white middle class people being shot, the outrage would have begun long ago.

Frankly I don't understand why the population puts up with it. Not sure if Boston is any whiter than Chicago but when it had a spike it homicides 25 years ago even though the violence was primarily in the low income neighborhoods the city went balls to the wall to crack down and clean up the problem. Proportionally Chicago is about 4X the size. That would equate to 125 murders a year, but the city is usually around 50.

Exactly. When DC was the "murder capital of the world" Georgetown was the safest place to live in the US.

You can't tell in Boston cuz they're all dead inside anyway.

"You know it's sad, but true"

To go with the recent theme in this thread, I'm listening to the news while winding down for the night. In Minneapolis there has been 120 shootings thus far this year; 80 of them have taken place in North Minneapolis, the section of the city that's pretty much delegated for the poor people. It's also where the BLM did its Occupy style protest outside the police station after the officer killed a man. Had these same numbers appeared in Northeast Minneapolis (Hipster Mecca these days) or anywhere south of I-394, the city would be under martial law right now.

Frankly, BLM can go F itself. Clean up the gangs, which are mainly black. BLM indeed.

That being said, I agree with your assessment about coverage/lack of coverage on the shootings.

Psst, the BLM comment was to show a bit of hypocrisy the group has demonstrated. Also, it turns out that BLM does a weekly protest in the Hennepin County Government Center, as I just learned. Each time it's about the police, FBI and such, but never have they cried out about the immense amount of violence happening within the poorest neighborhoods in the city, mostly populated by black lives.

Re: It's 106 miles to Chicago: Hosted by Old Pio

Forgot to post last night, there was another shooting in North Minneapolis last night that the #11 news crew reported as it happened during the news broadcast and just a few blocks from where their reporter in the field was located to report on the mother of a shooting victim was calling out for people to start informing the police what they know about various shootings around there or things will never change.

Re: It's 106 miles to Chicago: Hosted by Old Pio

Owned a house in North for awhile. Near Penn and Lowry. Its not just the danger. Its the pervasiveness of the situation. It penetrates all facets of life. And what makes it even more difficult is that folks there get glimpses of wealth that others have that seems so simply acquired. On the other hand, the people are genuine. They have family and community bonds that are not nearly as common elsewhere...they have to. So while its wrong to shut down parts of society to make their point, BLM as a concept is understandable and a good reminder of our neighbors who just didn't start with the same opportunities as us.

Not directly City of Chicago related, but the county it resides in, Cook County, had a "Per Bullet" tax kick in June 1st. The bullets are taxed at a rate of $0.05/each center fire bullet and $0.01/each rim fire bullet. An additional $300,000 is expected from this tax.

Cook County also added a $25.00 tax to each firearm sale.

The county budget for next fiscal year is 4.5 Billion dollars.

Some entrepreneur will open an ammo store just outside the Cook County limits.
