!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Last night the Irish showed promise for the upcoming season. A nice effort from the freshmen with a combined 4 goals (of the 5 scored) and 5 assists, 3 of which belonged to TJ Tynan, in a 5-3 win over the Guelph Gryphons.

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

Who will impress? Who will lead? Who will stand between the pipes? Who will have a break out season?

Look for Anders Lee to have an impact as a freshman. He is a tremendous athlete and a great competitor who has always produced.

Yeah, I was impressed by several freshmen yesterday. Shane Taker is the one who fed Lee on the breakaway, Stephen Johns had several big hits (although I think he left his feet on one...) and Jeff Costello carried the puck well. If pressed, I'd say I was more impressed with the freshmen than any other class. That probably needs an asterisk as it was only an exhibition game and there are 98 freshmen and only a few in the other classes...

I was even impressed with Coach Jackson in the DTP talk. He looked relaxed and even used quality humor in his talk.

Lastly, thank goodness I said "virtually" where Christian Hanson is concerned. Rats. :o

Now on to the real thing...

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

It also is virtually a lock that Christian Hanson will stay with the Leafs rather than start out the season with the Marlies.

Here's Burke's explanation of why Hanson was sent down to the Marlies.

Brian Burke claims some Maple Leafs players are on a very short leash. Or, as he refers to it, a “chihuahua leash.”

Count John Mitchell as being one of those.

Mitchell was outplayed at training camp by fellow forwards Luca Caputi and Christian Hanson. Yet, when the team announced which players were ticketed for the American Hockey League Marlies Monday, it was Caputi and Hanson who were headed to the farm, not Mitchell.

In this particular case, Mitchell’s previous service with the parent club went into the team’s decision.

“He got a call from the governor on this one,” Burke said. “He got a reprieve. He’s going to get a chance to show us what he can do.

“He hasn’t earned that this time around, but he earned it with his past contributions.”

Burke said the choice came down to “a balancing act.”

“You want to be fair to the players involved,” he said. “There’s a ‘body-of-work’ concept that we employ, too.

“I don’t think Mitchell has played as well has he can or should have. But we’ve seen what Mitchell can do for a couple of years.

Unlike Hanson, Caputi and Nazem Kadri, Mitchell would have had to clear waivers in order to report to the Marlies and was a likely candidate to be snapped up by another team.

As well, Burke said he did not want Hanson and Caputi playing six minutes a night, a scenario that may have very well played itself out had they remained with the parent club.

“Sometimes, if you’re a new guy, you’ve got to be better than the incumbent,” Burke said. “If you go the way training camp went, I think Caputi and Hanson could both make a real good argument that this isn’t a fair result.”

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

It's odd how last season seems both so far removed and yet like it was just a few weeks ago. But this season is upon us now.

ND meets Holy Cross at 6:30 our time Friday with BU and UW set to start approximately 3 hours later. I wanted to go to these games, but with the Blues hosting the Flyers Saturday night I didn't want to have to stay 2 nights in a hotel for this tourney. Sunday's games are at 1:00 and 4:00, give or take, our time with ND meeting either BU or UW.

ND and BU are the only ones of the quartet to have played a game so far (BU blew out their Canadian opponent), so there are no stats on Wisconsin or HC and ND's and BU's are stats that don't count anyway.

Still, I'll be paying attention to several Irish freshmen. Anders Lee, Jeff Costello, Shayne Taker and Stephen Johns got my attention Sunday. Remember, ND has more freshmen than any 2 other classes combined. I expect Nick Larson and Riley Sheahan to lead the way for the sophomores, while Patrick Gaul, Sean Lorenz and Billy Maday will be the hotshot juniors. Seniors will be represented by the captains.

I've been wondering who will be in net for ND. Assuming Steven Summerhays sets his alarm all week, I was thinking he might be in net Friday to be followed by Mike Johnson Sunday. That's something I can't get used to...wondering about starting goaltenders. I guess if Summerhays is as good as touted, that's a happy conundrum.

Holy Cross is pretty experienced having only 5 freshmen this season and 15 players who are juniors or seniors. Rob Linsmayer is the sophomore to watch. Third year studs include Mike Daly, Matt Clune, Jay Silvia and Matt Gordon. Seniors are led by Everett Sheen and Mark Znutas. Thomas Tysowsky saw the most time in net last season, so I assume he'll see most of the time this season.

BU is pretty balanced with their experience. They have 8 freshmen, 2 of whom had stellar appearances in their exhibition game. Charlie Coyle recorded an equal opportunity hat trick over the weekend: he had a PPG, an even-strength goal and a shortie. Adam Clendening is another newcomer to admire. Their sophomores are led by Alex Chiasson and Max Nicastro. David Warsofsky and Corey Trivino are the juniors of note, along with goalie Kieran Millan (the goalie who backstopped them to a NC 2 years ago). I assume he'll be in net for the weekend, although Coach Parker has employed Grant Rollheiser on several occasions. BU has only 2 seniors, led by Joe Pereira.

UW lost a lot last season. They are the 2nd youngest team this weekend behind ND. They have 10 freshmen and only 9 3rd and 4th year guys. The sophomores of note include Craig Smith and Justin Schultz. Juniors are led by Jordy Murray with seniors represented well by goalie Scott Gudmandson and Patrick Johnson. And yes, his pedigree is that Johnson family.

It's interesting to note that the last three Frozen Fours have been represented by 3 of these 4 teams, one in each year. Actually, the championship game in the last 3 FF's has been represented by 3 of these 4 teams. I like that my team is one of those three.

Pythagoras said it best, "The beginning is half the whole." Here's to a successful beginning.

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

It finally hit me just how many freshman are on this team. Jackson expects that he will be dressing about ten frosh every night. 8 of the 18 skaters will be freshmen as well as 2 of the 3 goalies. On any given night, half the team will be rookies.

For $10 you can watch all 4 games from St. Louis this weekend. Go to hockeyprimetime.com to buy Internet PPV tix.

Great, now all I have to do is figure out how to hookup my computor to my flat screen. Wish me luck!!

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

Impressions after the first real game of the season:

1. Stephen Johns is a big boy who has big boy hits. :D That check at the blue line was monstrous. Unfortunately, he was later called for boarding that became a major... It was definitely boarding, but I question the 5" version.

2. Anders Lee can score. And score. And score. Trivia question: who was the last Irish player to record a HT (and his was Texas style) in his first game?

3. I saw the Irish (especially the freshmen) work harder, skate faster, hold the puck in and keep control of the puck more tonight than in more than half of the games last season.

4. Ryan Guentzel finally has some linemates he apparently can click (and earn points) with. Nice dishes.

5. Did anyone else realize that of the 10 different players registering points tonight, half of them were not in an Irish sweater one year ago.

Here's to high hardware hopes.

Impressions after the first real game of the season: ...

impressions on your impressions:

1. I believe that check was audible across the river in East St. Louis. If it is possible he played this game BIGGER than his listed 6'4"/220. That's a scary thought.

2. Anders Lee has the quickest stick of any freshman I've seen at Notre Dame in a long time. And upper body strength to make it very effective. Seeing him play makes me wonder how this guy was JUST a 6th round draft pick by a joke of a franchise, unless he is a lot more polished now than he was in June of 2009. As for the trivia, without looking it up, I must confess I don't know. I want to say someone scored 4 in one of the games against a Canadian college at some point in time, but have no idea if it was a counted game or exhibition.

3. Yes. Very obvious this game was played with a level of enthusiasm that was often strangely absent last year. I do think they battled better in the offensive end than they did in their own, and they'll need to make sure they have the entire ice covered, especially against a BU team that probably has guys on 3 lines who can beat you, but an inexperienced defense. Don't get caught up in a shootout with these guys because if one of these teams can win 6-5, it's probably BU right now. I was impressed with the way the guys supported the puck and helped out in the HC zone. Very few breakdowns leading to any breaks for HC.

4. Really hope for a turnaround for him in his senior year. He was a solid player in '08-'09, but one of the biggest mysteries last season, a very confusing presence on the ice. Was he supposed to be a defensive, checker type of player? Was Jackson counting on him to actually provide offense since he added that to his game as a sophomore? Whatever it was, he struggled as much as any Irish player last year. Just hoping for solid games out of him and we'll let the points be a big bonus.

5. Amen. This team needed new blood, new energy.

Now, having witnessed a pretty solid effort, keep in mind, this was against a team that was 0-2-2 versus AIC last year in the regular season. And AIC won exactly 3 other games all season  .

It was the first real game of the season, and also a league game. Ironically, it was after an exhibition game the previous week against Guelph. (My brother and Mr. JJfP drooled over this player's mom.)

I expected BU to blow out UW last night, given UW's drastic losses from last season, but were it not for what I believe to be a bad call with under a minute left and some stellar goaltending by Milan, UW would have won by a few goals. BU eked that win out. Having said that, BU will come out on fire after that wake up call. And while they don't have many seniors, they are a more experienced team with some killer newbies of their own. (At least our freshman recorded a HT in a game that counted...)

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

Losing is not fun, especially losing so late in the game. But I will say this feels quite a bit different than coughing up all those games late last season.

Notre Dame played with some jump all the way to the end, and pressured BU quite nicely until the final whistle. The effort and puck possession they displayed in the attack zone was great, but once again got caught a few too many times in bad spots in front of the net.

Summerhays didn't play particularly well, but there were too many turnovers in bad spots. BU has quite a few talented skaters and will make you pay for giving them an extra chance or a wide open look or lane.

A lot of work to do, but the things that didn't go right this weekend look to be things that can be corrected by coaching and practice, and getting comfortable with all your linemates and partners out there.

The freshman skaters showed me a lot of what I expected defensively, and were everything I hoped for offensively. We'll get there.

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

I'll add some specifics to IHF's post now that I'm home and have watched my tape-delayed copy of the game:

Reiterating IHF, this loss is a lot easier to stomach than the many losses from last season because they almost didn't lose this one. They battled til the last whistle, took some quality shots, held the blue line nicely, cycled the puck/forechecked extremely well and played as a team. Losing when you work your tails off is okay. Losing because you play lazy, selfish hockey is not, and this definitely was not lazy, selfish hockey.

I continue to be impressed with Joe Lavin as captain. His leadership in his own end is what led to that pretty drop pass goal in the 2nd. Don't know if anyone else noticed, but he saw the possibilites way down the ice and directed his linemate to send the puck.

Others who made an impression tonight include T.J. Tynan, Riley Sheahan (who was oh, so close on that breakaway...) and most definitely Nick Larson. I kind of like that Calle Ridderwall is not the BMOC (or rather, the ice) so far. The scoring is spread out nicely and each line can threaten.

Somebody needs to reign in the testosterone level on Stephen Johns. While I love big physical guys who separate the opponent from the puck, leaving your bench short two games in a row is not a wise use of your physical prowess. Maybe he should stick to open ice hits...

I would also say there are some holes in the defense and net as all three periods saw a goal scored within the last minute forty. That's not good. I hate goals in the first and last 2 minutes of a period. It's disheartening when they did so well controlling the puck in the offensive zone. But that just means they have to work twice as hard in their defensive zone. It's hard to win games when you have to score 6 goals to do it.

The PP needs some tweaking. They did such a nice job controlling the puck when they were a man up, but came away empty handed. The shortie was outstanding, but you can't rely on short handed goals to make up for going 0-fer a man up.

While I'm disappointed that the Irish couldn't bring home a trophy, I'm encouraged by how hard they tried to take hold of that trophy.

The clock is ticking on Johns now for supplemental discipline as well, and its 40 minutes passed the hour. New this year I believe is an automatic 1 game suspension for anyone who receives three GM penalties. 2 in just the first three games needs to be addressed. Friday's was perhaps slightly questionable, but Sunday's was textbook hitting from behind against the glass. Consistently called in recent seasons as a 5 minute major with a GM. Makes me wonder if Jackson won't hand out a little supplemental discipline of his own for the game on Thursday. It is a fine line for sure that needs to be walked between being aggressive and physical and committing game ending penalties, but one that shouldn't require a bunch of GMs to be learned.

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

Aah. The first real home game. The first league game. The first opportunity for this team to remind the students and local fans how driven they are.

If you haven't seen the new arena construction video lately, check it out. You can see the outline of rink and the supports for the stands.

Remember that due to ND football playing a CCHA team, the hockey games are Thursday and Friday this week.

LSSU comes to town after a good test this past weekend in the Superior Showcase, tying a tough UMD team and losing to an apparently up-and-coming MTU program.

It's odd when looking at the stats thus far for both teams. The juniors are barely cracking the scoresheet. Granted, both teams have played only 2 games each so far and there are only 8 juniors total who've dressed so far.

Both teams have employed a freshman goalie for their 2nd games, with the same result: a loss, a GA of over 5 and the exact same save % of .792. Which leads me to conclude that Brian Mahoney-Wilson and Mike Johnson will be in net for their respective programs. BMW was in net for LSSU's tie and Johnson was in net for ND's win.

The Lakers top line has consisted of seniors Rick Schofield (with 5 points) and Will Acton (2 pts.) and sophomore Domenic Monardo (4 pts.). They've scored a whopping 4 PPG's in the early going, but all 4 came against one team. Granted that team was UMD and they were INCH's pre-season 5th place pick. LSSU has given up 3 PPG's and has not scored while shorthanded so far. They are averaging under 6 penalties/game in their 2 contests.

ND's top line so far consists of freshman Anders Lee (4 pts. that earned him CCHA rookie of the week) and seniors Ben Ryan and Ryan Guentzel (each with 3 pts.). ND has scored only 1 PPG so far, but on the flipside, has not given up a PPG while scoring 2 shorties in this young season. If you ignore Stephen Johns', umm, contributions to the PIM's, ND averages under 4 penalties/game so far. With Johns, that average jumps to 6 penalties/game. I want to know what the team will be like with him hitting the showers after a game. I wonder if he will be dressed...in a suit and tie...Thursday.

Coach Jackson is looking for his 300th career victory behind the bench. Wouldn't it be nice to get that out of the way Thursday?

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

{Boy I must be getting old as I can barely see the smilies on the new site. Not sure which is which...}

This game was played out in fits and starts. There were times when ND controlled the puck, cycled well, worked along the boards...then there were times when they played like the young team that they are, playing at the beginning of their season.

Oddly enough, the worst players on the ice tonight were not the unseasoned freshmen, but rather the senior captains. I was wholly unimpressed with their effort tonight, including their propensity to take penalties (save for Ryan Guentzel). Guentzel had one solid shift and Calle Ridderwall did score what was quite possibly the ugliest goal he's ever scored, but other than that, they took several penalties (Ben Ryan took 3), made bad passes and didn't control the puck that well.

It was also frustrating to see all the chances not capitalized on as the Lakers' Mahoney-Wilson gave up some fat rebounds and there was more than one occasion where I saw a yawning net.

That said, none of that bothered me as much as I thought it would. And for several reasons: the team went 25% on the PP, went 87.5% on the PK and a junior (Billy Maday) scored a fantastic shortie on an amazing pass after a stellar puck-controlling effort by a sophomore (Riley Sheahan).

Mike Johnson looked a little more solid in net. The first goal he gave up he was completely screened on, so a brick wall probably would've let that one by too. The 2nd was a PPG after ND had just gotten one guy back after being down 2 guys.

Kudos go out to Mike Voran for his 2-point night, including the insurance goal, his first of his career here. Kudos to David Gerths also for his first goal in an Irish jersey. And to Nick Larson for continuing the effort to keep his name on the scoresheet.

My source says LSSU will start their freshman in net tomorrow.

Here's to the first sweep of the season.

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

I'm browsing through my diary from last year in Rome and happen to read this:

"10-09-09...HOCKEY SEASON FINALLY STARTS!..... I thought I could let go after 7 months and a break with so much things going on, but no, it's still killing me, and their performance doesn't help... this is ridiculous..."

"10-10-09... I could not sleep after that disheartening event. It began to rain before dawn and it turned into a major storm which just echoes my emotions... God is a Notre Dame fan..."

... ...

And late in the season I wrote something like "Knowing it would break your heart, why still put your whole heart into it? Because you just could not control. It has become a habit which you can't change, even though heartbreaking is part of it. Then just accept it. Learn to be calm and look ahead. There is always tomorrow. You never know what will happen tomorrow."

...........

Comparison makes good things look better. Right?

I was not here on site to feel all the frustration, but was not thus influenced much less. My insistence of sticking with my computer in those 2am darkness for the game stream mostly ended up giving me bad mornings, and for times I feared to think about the situation when I come back, which looked highly possibly just finding my beloved team no longer the one I knew. But now I'm just happy. The boys are young and still not perfect, but this is definitely a new year, a new season, a new team, a dynamic one. I'm excited that the unknown "tomorrow" brings in fresh air and hopes when it turns into today, and that I can be here watching it happen.

Lordy, Yue, I am so glad you are back here in South Bend. Your game photos are amazing, as are your scenery photos. So, since I won't be at the Boston College game next week, because I have shows in Kansas City (Gates Barbecue Sauce, here I come, I've missed you so much!), can you take tons of photos from that game and post them on line really fast so I can see them that night?? Like figure out how to take a photo and put it on line right away before you take the next photo? I can then look at them on my phone while I am at our show. I do that constantly anyway so I can update our fiddler on scores (much to the disgust of our lead guitar player who does not have a complete and undying love for Notre Dame like said fiddler).

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

Dear Cindy, I really don't want to disappoint you, but I myself will head out after the first period of the game tonight for a trip to Sedona, AZ, the red rock country... Now my scheduled returning time is about midnight next Saturday. I admit that I was too amazed by Sedona to remember to check who we are playing on that weekend... well I am actually considering about rescheduling my time back.. Let's see how it goes but probably, we will both miss it..
