I would think that if they really wanted to, they could negotiate with Iran to keep their sources flowing into China... So they had a possible workaround before today.

Apparently a Chinese tanker carrying methanol from Iran to China made it around the US "blockade" despite being sanctioned by the US and supposedly not being allowed to make the trip. So the blockade seems to be working about as well as you would expect an idea from this clusterfuck of an administration to work.
