ipod touch question.

You guys haven't failed me yet so I am hoping some one knows the answer to this.

I use Microsoft office/outlook to manage all my email, contacts, etc. I currently have an iPaq that is bulky but syncs beautifully with my outlook calendar and visa versa. Does anyone have an ipod touch (looking at the 32 G) that uses it with Outlook. When I search I can't find too much except a few random things about apps and retrieving contacts from emails.

Re: ipod touch question.

You *should* be able to sync your contacts and your calender with your iPod Touch when you plug it into your computer. I don't know how much of a difference there is in that function between the Touch and the iPhone, but it works with the iPhone.

If you have an Apple store in the area stop in and talk to a rep. Or call Apple Support. They should be able to give you all of the info.

Re: ipod touch question.

When I asked at the store they told me flat out it wouldn't work but then I was online and saw apps for stuff that said it worked.

That's weird. As 'bando said, syncing (contacts, calendars, notes, tasks at least) between Outlook (2007 in my case) and iPhone generally works fine without any third-party software to support it. I don't see why the Touch would work any differently, since they're basically identical except for cell network access.

Re: ipod touch question.

Apple products generally don't like communicating with non Apple products. not that it can't happen. ipod and Mac get along great. they tolerate the camera. they hate the Blackberry.

Re: ipod touch question.

I get my Google mail pushed to my ipod touch with no problem. I found instructions how to get Google to push my Gmail, contacts, and calendar to the touch with no problems.

As for how to do the same with Outlook, I would assume that you would just need to know the settings your Outlook uses and swap them with the Gmail instructions.

I did find it interesting that for Google to push correctly to the iPod Touch, you need to set it up as a "Microsoft Exchange" account. I NEVER had iTunes sync any of my mail, contacts, or calendars. I only use iTunes to copy music over to the iPod Touch.

*edit* I would also assume that your work would already provide an exchange server that coordinates the Outlook programs in order to share calendars. Maybe give a friendly IT kid a call to see what he recommends?

Ha. This is all personal stuff. Outlook comes courtesy of Mr's work but installed here so he can work at home if he wants.

Thanks all. I think I will take the plunge. Looks like a cool toy.

Re: ipod touch question.

And if you like eBooks, there is a free Kindle reader for the iPod.

Get the big one - Costco is generally cheaper than Buy More.

Re: ipod touch question.

Chances are you could get one a lot cheaper on ebay if apple is still giving them away to students when they purchase macbooks. Plenty of people already have iphones and just try to unload the touch for some money after they get their laptop.

Re: ipod touch question.

Thanks everyone!!

Got it for 259. Not bad but what drama to get it. Went to Cosco. Talked to 3 different people who all said that Cosco was great. No one told me that they don't get to use any credit card that every other store in America takes. They also told me it was in a bundle and the web page said so too~and it wasn't. However, I ended up getting a 10 $ cash card for joining and that brought it lower than anything I could get anywhere else. Had every problem that anyone described (when I was reading reviews) setting up itunes and needed to call Tech support twice (Cosco's) for them to tell me how to do stuff that I never would have figured out on my own! Apple might have the most anemic, pathetic set up for support or info ever! For a big company it is embarrassingly bad.

Couldn't sync my contacts even with tech support. My kid figured that out. Now I am up and running and it is a great toy! It absolutely is not an intuitive machine.

Really? I've never heard of anyone having any trouble with that since iTunes does it for you automatically. That really surprises me because iTunes is so easy to use.

The touch booklet tells you to do it thru the touch which it absolutely will not do. Went into itunes and poof. I would think I was stupid except the big manual and the support guy also tell you to sync thru the gizmo, not the itunes.

You can do it both ways. Through iTunes it does it automatically, through the iPod you have to do it manually but you have more options that way.

NOthing would make my touch sync, no matter what I did, Works now that I set it up thru itunes tho.

Odd, i was able to setup my google account to sync directly with my ipod. Didn't need a Microsoft Exchange account at all. But I only use Google for contacts.
