International Left-Handers Day 2011

To all my fellow left-handed brethren, whether completely left-handed, or you just shoot a puck left-handed...

I wish August 13th to be a terrific day! :)

Re: International Left-Handers Day 2011

I notice a lot of lefties in the political threads.

Oh, the other kind - never mind.

Re: International Left-Handers Day 2011

At the way America keeps going, there won't be any lefties left. :D

BTW, is the afterparty at the Leftorioum?

Re: International Left-Handers Day 2011

I heard or read somewhere that your dominant hand is the one you wax your dolphin with.

That's an...interesting theory.

Researcher Theodore Blau said, using each hand in turn, draw X's, then circle them. If you draw the circles counterclockwise, you're left-handed.

(from the book "The Natural Superiority Of The Left-Hander" by James T. de Kay)

Great short read, btw.

You know, I just realized that to be so... it really did feel unnatural for me to air-draw a circle clockwise.

Re: International Left-Handers Day 2011

As a leftie I remember with dread that a guy in my class (3rd or 4th grade) was a leftie, but his parents evidently gave permission to turn him into a rightie (I'm thinking about how effective "pray away the gay" is). Nobody said a word to me about changing. But this poor kid seemed to struggle mightily. And was constatnly under the watchful eye of the teacher. I'm pretty confident that nonsense doesn't go on anymore. And I'm also confident this effort to change what he was didn't affect my buddy at all. They say he hardly ever misbehaves during that hour a day he's allowed out of his cell.

My folks assumed I was right handed when I was a kid...like everyone else in the family. Bought me a baseball glove for a righty...then wondered why I couldn't catch or throw worth a $****. :D I don't remember who figured out I was left handed but I eventually I got the right...ah, correct equipment and suddenly I excelled at catching and throwing a baseball. It was the same with a football initially when I was forced to throw the ball with my right arm.

Re: International Left-Handers Day 2011

I was supposed to be a lefty. My mother, when showing me how to do things like write or eat with a fork or spoon, kept taking the pencil or other utensil out of my left and putting it in my right because it looked wrong to her. For some reason it never dawned on her that I was a lefty like my father. She was so persistent with it though that it made me ambidextrous. I can write with both hands very well, but with my right slightly quicker. I can swing/shoot/catch with both hands equally well.

Like many (most?) lefties, I'm a mixture. Bat right. Throw left. Tennis left. Golf right. Write left. But when a child is alway reaching for things with its left hand, that's a pretty good indicatation. No offense, but your parents sound like they were a little slow on the uptake. ;)

If you were of major league quality, imagine how valuable you'd be. A pitcher who could play the percentages by switching arms.

Yeah that would have been nice. I have thought about getting one of the ambidextrous gloves, just to mess with people when playing a little catch.

Edit; Kind of like this:

That's hilarious. I'm a bit confused, did the umpire rule the batter couldn't change which side of the plate he was standing on during an at bat? Otherwise, they could still be going through those gyrations.

Hitters can switch sides during ABs -- it happens on some rare occasions when a pitcher is removed due to injury. I assume the umpire ruled once you step into the box for a pitch you can't switch, otherwise, like you said, infinite regress.
