Incoming Freshmen for Fall of 2012

Re: Incoming Freshmen for Fall of 2012

Seems like maybe they've cleansed the Commitment lists to exclude the incoming class. The 2012-13 commitments are no longer posted, but the ones for the following year are there. Most guys do not Commit to D3 2 years in advance.....

Re: Incoming Freshmen for Fall of 2012

That CUW class just keeps on getting bigger. I think it is safe to say that they will look very different next season.

Re: Incoming Freshmen for Fall of 2012

The date there was the date of the original posting - plenty of activity since then
well with the Oz rumor mill churning, NOT much as far as recruits either way..............what the devil is happening, or not happeneing:eek:

Does size really matter???:p

The recruiting classes at LFC were similar in size (16) in the Fall '09 and '11. Both classes had some really good players that didn't pan out in the long run, several transferred-out or just quit playing hockey altogether. Anyways, none of them had an immediate impact on the LFC program. As of now, LFC is in Year 4 of their commitment to improve while stuck on 5 wins per season. They're praying that Sully can bail them out in net until the offense emerges and Coach McKelvie finds the old "Forester Magic".

Meanwhile, only time will tell for CUW. This is now the time for their fans to enjoy CUW's willingness to make a commitment to improve. A New rink, a new coach, and a battalion of new players is a great start. Here is hoping that their success comes sooner. :)

The number of kids is less impressive than where they are coming from. The BCHL and AJHL are excellent Tier II Canadian leagues. He also has kids from a number of different NAHL programs. This is a big hike in class from what Hrkac brought in and most of the post-Fritz LFC classes.

I am curious to see what McKelvie does in terms of recruiting.

I guess that is just the start of the pain train we will be on:eek:
Oh come on all we've heard over the years is how players come to Oswego for the facility, friends, school, coaches, fans, tradition, town, and how money (saved) was one of the last reasons they would go there.

Plattsburgh had to go through it a few years ago and still managed to make the SUNYAC Championships for the couple years they were with out.

AVFC, your point is well taken. Fritz' last recruiting class of 2009 had only 3 players, out of 16, that became productive quality impact contributors over the past years. Those three were Sullivan, Bark, and Bushbacher (now at LU) all from the OJHL which at that time was a good Tier II Canadian League. The 2010 and 2011 post-Fritz classes have only produced Sharp and McAloon as quality impact players at this point. I will caution you that those two Western Canadian Junior Leagues have either some inflated stats, or the Dmen and goalies out west need more development. Junior stats are tricky reads. The NAHL presents the same challenge. IMHO, that is why coaches are getting these larger recruiting classes. Its a rater reliability issue.

Re: Incoming Freshmen for Fall of 2012

If someone contributed consistently in the BCHL or AJHL, there is a good chance they can contribute at the D3 level.

At face value I agree with your statement. However, there are some organizations that have no problem doling out "phantom assists" like candy at Halloween. This problem does exist from youth hockey on up to college. It is most apparent when you consider a club's future success is based on moving players to the next level. A track record of upward movement is a key in attracting players for their next roster.

That is why I said to take caution. A coach needs a true scouting analysis from a trusted source and often game film to see the true skill and hockey sense of a recruit. Just relying on stat sheets and box scores to predict a recruits ability to produce is iffy. Hence, rater reliability issues occur when due diligence is not taken. That is also why people qualify predictions with the comment, "they look great on paper".

Re: Incoming Freshmen for Fall of 2012

I agree with you too.

That's why you want a coach who has connections in certain junior leagues. Anyone can look at stats and make assumptions. The good recruiters know other coaches in the BCHL or NAHL, etc etc and are able to get the real scoop on players. I think Wise is one of those coaches. I would have no problem taking a goaltender from the last place team in the BCHL with a 4.75 gaa if I talked to four coaches from the league who said he was one of the best goaltenders they saw all year. Case in point - I don't believe Kyle Jones' BCHL numbers were especially impressive and he went on to have one of the most prolific careers in D3 history. Conversely, I wouldn't be too psyched on a 100pt. kid who played in the AtJHL or WSHL, especially if I didn't know or hadn't worked with any coaches from those leagues. But I think it's safe to say if someone puts up 50-60 points in the BCHL or the Alberta league, they can play - regardless of who is doing the score keeping.

Points well made.
When I look at the list of CUW's recruits they have 3 players that sport 50+ pts. for last season. One is from the OJHL and the other two are from NOJHL. These leagues are examples of my former cautions. They well may be that good , but I'd be skeptical unless due diligence supports the skill.

Wise is an excellent coach and probably has a handle on what these guys offer his program even if those numbers were inflated. I could see CUW as the 5th best team in the MCHA if they gel early with these additions coupled with Wise's coaching ability. Their problem is that they have 8 games with Adrian and MSOE because of the imbalanced MCHA schedule. However, its the last year for that crap.

Yeah, but then they go from 4 each with Adrian and MSOE to 2 against each, and 2 more against both SNC and St. Scholastica.
