Inception

Re: Inception

Just watched it for a 2nd time. Still very good. I think I caught a few little things that are making me lean towards still in limbo. But I could easily watch it again and be swayed another way I think. I need to force myself to watch for details but its tough. Lots of visuals that can distract you from the very little things.

This has been on a continuous loop in my head, much like it is in the movie. Very powerful soundtrack in this flick.

Re: Inception

The real kicker for me will be when I'm able to pay closer attention to the kids when I see it a second time.

There were actually two sets of kids in the cast? They looked so identical.

For me, the main pieces of evidence that Cobb might still be in limbo/dreaming in the last scene are the kids (and the odd qualities of the Mombasa scene, which supposedly takes place in the same level as the final scene). If I can be convinced that the kids actually are a little different and may have aged, then we might be on to something.

Or wait... the kids were shown at different ages in the film, weren't they? Did the kids look different in the beach memory (scene where Aridane follows Cobb into his Mal memories)? Or maybe the older kids are on the phone in the hotel before Cobb and Arthur try to leave on the helicopter?

The wedding ring is a good catch, but it just might be yet another piece of contradictory evidence. This film seems ripe with them.

Re: Inception

Another thought... what was the significance of the thing where Cobb and Mal commit suicide on the train tracks? Were they deep in dreamspace, and that's how they both got into limbo in the first place?

Re: Inception

It would be his only totem; the top was his wife's.

Right - that's what I meant. I did say to my wife at one point that i wasn't sure about the top since it was specifically pointed out that it was Mal's totem.

It is suggested in the comments from my linked ring article that the two different sets of kids may have been the ones we see (younger) and the ones we hear on the phone (who sound older). All that does is confuse things more, though...

No I thought the suicide was how they got OUT of the Dreamscape. By allowing themselves to die they woke themselves up. He put the thought in her head that the only way to prove that reality wasnt what they thought it was was to kill themselves so they can wake up. The thought stuck with her after that is why she killed herself in the "real world".

Or am I misunderstanding your question?

Nope, I think that answers it.

Honestly, I think I can buy the "the last shot is in the real world, and Cobb doesn't know/care where he is anymore" theory. The only two things that stand in the way of that are the kids not aging (I want to see for sure where the second pair of child actors come into play) and the way that the Mombasa chase scene so closely resembles a lot of the action sequences that take place in dreamland ("enemies" popping up all over the place from nowhere and the weird walls).

Re: Inception

I like the ring theory.

Now, I say this having just saw it tonight, and not even thinking about looking at this thread until I had seen the movie. But, it does make sense, and it sounds like something Nolan would do, judging by his tendency of minor details in twists that completely change the movie. A subtle foreshadowing, I guess you could say.

Of course, I'll have to watch the movie a couple times more to get every nuance, and I will enjoy that, as I did love the movie, and the mental challenges it presented (and of course, the actual plot/action).

An aside, something about the actress who played Mal (also the main girl in Public Enemies, I can't remember her name offhand) bugs me. I can't place it. Maybe her slight accent? I dunno. Good actress, not taking anything away from that, but something just doesn't jive with me.

Re: Inception

That is Marion Cotillard. She does have a thick French accent, and those are hard to cover up completely. I really like her, it is a shame she had the role she did.

I'm thinking that's the case. It doesn't quite fit. She does fit the "classic beauty" look, though, which is why I looked past whatever bugs me in Public Enemies.

And I have to admit, I was mentally doing the "tree graph" when they started going to multi-levels of the dreams, just to keep things straight (like who can die without going into limbo, etc).

Plus the character was kinda whiny and annoying and sometimes that rubs off on one's perception of the actor. That's why I will always think Marcia Gay Harden is evil after seeing "The Mist".

Re: Inception

If Cotillard is your problem with the film then you've got weird priorities.

She's fine.

I also have a huge crush on her. :o

I actually think the opposite: if that's the biggest thing I am worrying about, then that was a dam good movie. :p

And Frenchy, I see your point, but that Harden character was on another level.
