Inappropriate behaviour in Women's Hockey seems to be running rampant - UCONN's turn

Re: Inappropriate behaviour in Women's Hockey seems to be running rampant - UCONN's t

What's really pitiful is when coach behavior of this nature happens at private DII/DIII schools where kids and parents are paying an arm and leg just to be there.

It should not happen at any level but it does. These types of scandals have been evident in Women's Lacrosse as well at both D1 and D 3 levels. Like any other profession, there are some great coaches, some good coaches, some okay coaches and some terrible coaches. Most fall into the last two categories. Just because someone is a coach does not mean they are smart or that they are a good person. Families need to consider this before they send their daughters off to play for that person behind the bench. The best you can hope for is that your child is treated fairly and with respect and can operate in a safe environment on a even playing field. Do some due diligence before you decide who you want to play for.

Finally, there is NO PLACE for hazing in sports, sororities, fraternities or any other organization (See recent story about the young man apparently killed by his Fraternity brothers at Baruch in NYC). I recall rookie night, swigging schnapps and puking my guts out with my fellow Frosh. I have fond memories of it, but nobody got hurt in the process and we all moved on.

It's a different world now. Hazing is now a crime. Coaches need to tell their teams DON'T HAZE and if you do, you are off the team. It's simple...ZERO TOLERANCE.

Who knows how this case will play out but it's a story that has been told before and one that seems to appear in reruns every few years.

Anyone have any experience with this coach? Does this seem likely or is it more likely sour grapes/litigation related exaggerations? I'm sure there are many recruits who are not sure what to believe that the moment.

Usually when there is smoke there is fire. Seems quite a coincidence that this is the second coaching gig he's had in recent years where there was controversy. At Niagara he suddenly resigned "out of the blue" during the season, and the circumstances were hushed up. Associated with something to do with players there too.

From what I recall, not entirely true. He did resign, but it was in August I believe. Also, if what I was told is accurate, allegedly, he resigned because he cut the wrong player and that player's dad then struck a deal with the AD that included a donation to the program, with conditions. One of which included his resignation. If there was more to that story then perhaps they are related but that was how it was presented to me.

My feeling at that time was that he was on the wrong side of politics and that he was a decent guy. If the current allegations are true, then he really needs to work on his people skills.

I heard of a case where a team had a "super nice guy" for a coach. Everybody was happy, and the team sucked. Then the "super nice guy" was replaced with a "super-jerk" as coach. Everyone was distraught over the change, many considered leaving or transferring or just quitting the team. Over time the team realized that the previous coach had actually been a "super nice guy/in over his head as a coach". And as much as the new coach personally stayed a jerk, the team improved on the ice, the players felt better about themselves, and became very close and successful as a team. Turns out the guy was a "super-jerk/really good coach". I guess it depends on what you want out of a school, team, situation, life, whatever. Everyone would like to play for the "super nice guy/great coach" but that usually isn't going to happen.

Anyways, in terms of this thread, I think the phrase "running rampant" is in this case being stretched really thin, like "butter over too much bread." (B Baggins)

As I recall he resigned much earlier than August - about three months before the program at Niagara folded. (but my recollection may be wrong)

Chris MacKenzie left Niagara a season before the program folded. Josh Sciba was the coach in the final season.
