Interesting story for sure, AH? Another angle on it, this canadian school now can sell more of their college-motivated hockey players from Canada to stay in Canada instead of always migrating to the USA to play NCAA college hockey. Stay in Canada & play NCAA hockey. Has a nice ring to it.
Shameful. It's one thing to cut a sport, but to blind-side them that was is utterly despicable in so many ways.
I heard about this through the Alumni newsletter, but I had no idea about the details.
NU announced cuts in tennis and wrestling this year, but allowed the programs to continue if financing could be found.
The thing with Shepherd at WWU there is that he seemed to be pretty dead set about killing the program and didn't really go outside of the administration there before making the announcement, and even that was botched as well.
On a slightly reverse note, Centenary College (NCAA - D1) has applied to reclassify to NCAA D-III.Some administrators come in with an agenda and carry it out whatever anybody thinks. This reminds me a little bit of when UVM dropped football. Some people think it enhances reputation to be a non-football school. However, nobody told the Ivies about it.
It does seem that the addition of SFU (who I remember playing us back in the dark ages when they were NAIA) would have helped reduce travel costs. I still think NAIA to DIII would have made more sense.

For lots of schools DIII is a logical place to be. If only the NCAA would spread its wealth around more to DIII to alleviate some of the growth issues. I know there are a number of schools that have explored the idea of going to DIII from DII in at least a preliminary fashion.

It only makes sense as they are an extreme outlier in the Summit League, though not as bad as Southern Utah.
Now if we can get NJIT out of the Great West Conference...
