Illinois to D1

Re: Illinois to D1

But with only 9 men's sports and 10 women's, does title IX still hold true?
More than likely... Remember that Illini football is 85 scholarships... The most scholarships a women's sport would offer would be about 25 or so... Those other 60 have to come from somewhere to equal out...

I've always thought the 85 was a ridiculous number. Even being 3 deep at every single position (incl. K,P) you only come up with 72 scholarships. Its just wasted money.

You're right. I just tried to figure it out and it still seems that they men receive about 35-50 more scholarships than the women do already.

I thought Title IX was based on the student body population, and equal scholarships given.

Women's hockey doesn't NEED to be added to have Men's Hockey. It's just a quick way to maintain Title IX Compliance. Or, an increase in scholarships is given to an existing women's sport can offset the addition of Men's Hockey, as long as equal sports opportunities are given for women.

And... (skimming through Title IX discussion) Title IX is fulfilled if: "Full and effective accommodation of the interest and ability of underrepresented sex. This part of the test is satisfied when an institution is meeting the interests and abilities of its female students even where there are disproportionately fewer females than males participating in sports."

So... the addition of Women's Hockey isn't "needed" to comply with Title IX. It's just that you already spend $X,XXX,XXX on establishing a Mens D1 team, why not throw in the extra $XX,XXX needed for the women's program too.

No.

title 9 has 3 parts to satisfy, and every time any other than an equal quota has been tried, a liberal judge has been found that says the school has to have as many women's scholarships as men's. So, if you add 18 men's hockey scholarships, the school will have to add 18 womens, and track or rowing are the cheapest.

True, but given how long UM and MSU have been around, it's not really a very close comparison compared to what UI would go through.

True, UI would need to figure out the Title IX aspects, but I don't think there would be criticism from the hockey community if they decided to only add a men's program and add women's scholarships in another sport. Hockey is an expensive sport. I read somewhere the Gophers spend upwards of $100,000 just on sticks annually.

Re: Illinois to D1

The most confusing part about the scholarships and equal opportunity, is that you aren't giving scholarships to random students at the University. You are hand picking students to come in who are skilled in that sport. So I don't understand how that meets the opportunity criteria. It's not an opportunity for any female student, its for a very small subset of highly skilled athletes who may not have even chose your University without the enticement of a scholarship.

Like many rules, it's more about what is easy to measure than about what is actually accomplished. Few could possibly come to consensus on what equal opportunity is, but adding up a couple of columns on a calculator. Even the NCAA has people that can handle that.

Re: Illinois to D1

"The expansion area also includes a site where Fox and others would like to develop a new $15 million ice arena east of the I Hotel and Conference Center, but that wasn't the driving force for the land transaction, officials said. Fox said they are still trying to put together financing for the 100,000-square-foot ice arena, which would contain two sheets of ice."

Re: Illinois to D1

IMO, 15 million isn't going to get you very much for a Big Ten hockey arena. ;) Just sayin.

Re: Illinois to D1

With a new development agreement complete, planners are proposing a technology and fabrication building north of the UI's swine research facility along South First Street.

I'd like to hear more about the swine research facility, personally.

No, but it's a start and its easier for a donor to throw another pile of money on top of that that and say "Let's move up to the NCAA level and I'll give you a giant pile of small unmarked bills"

Re: Illinois to D1

I don't know about Champaign, but Chicago has the world's most passionate hockey fans going on 4 years now. :)

Kidding aside, hope he decides to go for it.

But it wasn't that long before where there were a lot of empty seats and abysmal TV ratings for the Hawks.
