Illinois Fighting Illini Hockey is back

Re: Illinois Fighting Illini Hockey is back

SCHOOL RUMORED (Source)
Illinois (Let's Play Hockey and CollegeHockey.info tweet)
Eastern Illinois (self-tweeted)
Iowa State (Let's Play Hockey tweet, online article)
Buffalo (Bowling Green paper)
Minnesota State-Moorhead (actually pursued)
Colorado State (online article)
Kennesaw State (multiple online articles)
Lindenwood (multiple online articles)
Liberty (online article)
Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Milwaukee paper)
Akron (online article)

Am I missing any?

Here is an article from two days ago quoting Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas.

Not exactly the words of an athletic director about to announce a new varsity sport.

University of Nebraska (Lincoln) - article about them planning for ice in their new arena - read that here somewhere

Re: Illinois Fighting Illini Hockey is back

How could you leave Syracuse out of your list? Like the robins retuning in the springtime, there is an annual Syracuse to add hockey thread somewhere every year it seems. There was a report when Darryl Gross took over as AD that he was considering it. I believe that they actually did some sort of study, but concluded that they'd have to build an arena. Buffalo actually gave it a serious look under Warde Manuel but when he left for UConn it was dropped. He was the Assistant AD who oversaw hockey at Michigan, and has a real affinity for the sport. Rhode island actually studied the feasibility of upgrading when Boss was built. They spent time, at least informally, going around to a number of AHA schools including UConn, Holy Cross and I think Bentley collecting information on costs, attendance scheduling and so forth. A friend's kid was a grad student there at the time and worked on the study. there is some thought that St Anselms will move up to take UConn's old spot in AHA when the Huskies go to Hockey East.

It would never happen in Syracuse.

Re: Illinois Fighting Illini Hockey is back

Gonzaga, Appalachian State, Grambling, University of Phoenix and Butler (they will probably drop bouncyball now that the coach left)
Central Michigan and Grand Valley State have been tossed around as well as rumors.

Re: Illinois Fighting Illini Hockey is back

THN column that mentions this rumor as well as Canisius' new rink.

The news of this partnership comes at a coincidental time, as Twitter was abuzz on the weekend with rumors of the University of Illinois joining the new Big Ten hockey conference in the future. As it turned out, the “big announcement” revolved around new uniforms for the school’s club team, but bringing Division I hockey back to Illinois is long overdue.

I will say one thing about club hockey. They get to start playing earlier. First game is Sept 13. Glad it is all about grades.

They also end earlier. I think 3 weeks, so the season length is just about equal.

Re: Illinois Fighting Illini Hockey is back

Wasn't there a DePaul rumor for about five minutes a few years ago?
