How long until tournament expansion?

Re: How long until tournament expansion?

Even Big Ten schools aren't going to jump at this. It's 36 scholarships a year, a likely need for a new arena, and it's not like your share of the BTN profits are going to increase by adding a hockey team.

It very well could be more than 36 scholarships needed. If you add 18 scholarships for the men's program, but your school population is, say, 55% female and 45% male, then your scholarships have to be at that ratio. That would mean you would need 22 scholarships on the women's side of the equation somewhere.

That is, if I understand Title IX correctly........

That would be true if the school were already in proportion with its expenses. If it is not yet in proportion, then any move *toward* proportion is still considered acceptable, so as long as the net change of the scholarships added on both sides moves the overall number toward the correct ratio.

In your example, if the population is 55% female and the current athletic funding is 45% female, then adding 18 scholarships on both sides still moves the funding ratio toward 55%.

I wouldn't say huge, will grow from the team playing, but will it grow in spectators or viewers? I don't see it, just like all the year everyone said soccer will be huge. I do see some growth in viewers for hockey, and maybe an outside chance of a new team or 2 in the next decade, so in the long run I would say it would be a wash between lacrosse and hockey, hockey needs to find away to make those viewers into more revenue.

Re: How long until tournament expansion?

Does the NCAA's 25% rule for the tournament apply to college hoops? If 65 teams make the tournament including the play-in game, that would mean 260 mens D-1 hoops programs. Are there that many?

25% is maximum not minimum. Given how many conferences get auto-bids with no chance of any other team in the conference getting an invitation, it is not appropriate to count every division one program as a potential participant. Take half a dozen conferences and use 6 rather than 48, say, for the total number from them (if each of those conferences had eight teams). I'd have much preferred they stayed at 64, but they do not consult me!

There are 344 men's D-1 basketball programs.

Re: How long until tournament expansion?

Isn't Basketball at 68 teams now? I thought they went to four play in games last year or the year before.

They were pushing for 96 when they backed off and went with 68 instead, if you recall.

Re: How long until tournament expansion?

Wow, I had no idea there were that many teams. Thanks for the info.

Regarding expansion, the quickest way I could see that happening given the 25% waiver that the sport needs is if the Big 10 conference started adding members but some of its teams were getting shut out of the NCAA's because of ECAC or AHA teams making it. This is a ways off though.

Can't really see any reason to contract the tournament. Give the regionals a little more time.

8 scholarships, a gym, and a coach and you have yourself a basketball program. Plus it seems to be popular for some reason that I can't fathom.

I never found repetitively slapping a ball on the floor entertaining. ;) :D

And a ball. It is just cheaper for so many people to play, and more people do.

It's popular because its the game of CONSTANT ACTION. Which is too much action for me. Action=points

The parade to the free-throw line for the last few minutes of nearly every game doesn't qualify as CONSTANT ACTION in my book.

Re: How long until tournament expansion?

The tournament should stay at 16. No team should get an advantage (12 team tourney with 4 byes) because you never know what will happen, look at Holy Cross vs Minnesota. Also the tournament should not expand because it loses meaning if 1/3 of team would get in the tournament. As a fan of a team in a big conference who gets in every 20 years, Merrimack, being one of 16 is something special. Think about how many times a conference gets 3/4 of their teams in the final four after they went .500 on league play. The current format makes every weekend big but not stupid like the BCS.
