Home Improvement - Undoing Previous Owners "Landlord" Specials

87 hours later... my 17-year old grill which, despite my best scraping and scrubbing efforts and zero effort by my prior tenants, had become more carbonized fat grit than grill, now looks like the day it rolled out of the plant. And there is a fine white powder of incinerated everything that was not steel which even now is circulating in a cloud above the city of Phoenix.
Isn't that essentially how a self cleaning oven works?

Fuck building contractors and insurance companies with a skate blade sideways. I have an adjuster accusing my contractor in print (text) of fraud and blackmail.

I just want my fucking house dried out, people. If y'all want to have a knife fight do it in a bar, not using my claim number.

Temps warmed to 20 here outside Chicagoland, so I popped my frozen Nest Hello off the wall mount and brought it inside to warm up. It's been offline since midnight the 23rd when the Polar Votex settled into the region.

Let it warm up for an hour and it came back to life. Reinstalled it, we'll see how long it lasts in the (still frozen) temps. Thr trickle charge from the doorbell transformer seems useless in zero degree temps.

I had to take apart some of my washing machine to try salvaging it. I ran it a few times and it kept failing at the drain process, like the pump wasn’t doing its thing and thus the spin cycle didn’t start.

I pulled up YouTube to watch this pro appliance repairman who discusses the whole gamut of home appliances, brands and models to buy or avoid, features, etc.. He happened to have a video of my exact washer for the exact issue I had. It turns out that one of the color-catching sheets made its way into the drain hosing, lodging itself where the pump sits. There was also crapload of lint and a couple bobby-pins.

I man-crush that dude.

ETA : Ben’s Appliances and Junk is the name of his channel.

Your adjuster is probably right, tbh. We had sewer backup flood our basement a few years ago. Because the house has a history of this, I purchased a sewer backup rider on my HOI, which Progressive shockingly paid with no resistance almost immediately.

Because of that, we informed our restoration contractor that we would be paying for the job ourselves and they shouldn't bill insurance. This caused a whole rigamorole with their office staff where they kept asking for our insurance info, before finally agreeing to send us the bill. The bill was grossly inflated relative to the work done, so we insisted that they itemize it. Of course they were not used to doing that because they want to soak your HOI, so we received a very complex itemized list of charges for equipment, labor, and multiple units of measure.

Long story short, we got the bill cut in half after talking to the leader of the crew who actually did our job. He agreed the numbers provided didn't make sense relative to what they did.
