Hockey East Playoff Attendance

Re: Hockey East Playoff Attendance

In the history of the boxscore there probably has NEVER been an attendance figure given that reflects FEWER people than were actually there. The opposite is frequently true, especially when buildings are unexpectedly or embarrassingly empty. I would be willing to bet if they provided a figure of 2888 for the boxscore there is no way there were 2889 or more people in the building, including players, ushers, and mascots.

Come to a Brown game at Meehan Auditorium, and you will see a shining example of exaggerated attendance. Not that the exaggerations make us look much better. You can only stretch it so much before someone throws the bull sh*t flag.

Re: Hockey East Playoff Attendance

I know for a fact that Brown counts players on both teams, coaches/equipment people as well as broadcasters/media types in their attendance figures.

They count every breathing human in the arena when they do their attendance. I'm sure they aren't the only ones.

Re: Hockey East Playoff Attendance

League playoff QF attendance is a problem all over college hockey, not just Hockey East. Only North Dakota sold out its playoff game in the WCHA - all the other WCHA hosts were well down from their season averages.

Certainly, spring break is a huge killer. It's not just the students leaving campus, but faculty, staff and community families who leave town. That's probably 50-60 percent of the loss.

I think the other 40 or 50% are those fans who are sick of watching the same teams playing again in games that are often unattractive match-ups.

Finally, I think a lot of fans know these tournaments mean very little in comparison to the regular season and the upcoming NCAAs. These tourneys decide very little and basically are money grabs to fund league coffers.

Re: Hockey East Playoff Attendance

BC's quarterfinal attendance has been pretty bad for that last 6 or 7 years (since I became a season ticket holder). Usually the students are on Spring break but not this year. The only explaination I have is that people want to save their money for the garden.

It's strange cause you can walk up and buy 10 dollar tickets and sit anywhere you want at Conte. I am currently sitting at center ice about 10 rows up with tickets that are supposed to be in CC. It's not a bad deal.

So I think everybody did a bit better today, though I haven't checked. If this is a problem around all of college hockey I wonder if someone had the time if it's a problem in college basketball too. Not for the huge conferences, I'm sure, but maybe for the big mid majors? Is it just a quarterfinal thing...?

Just want to give you a warning - BC fans generally get very angry when you point out that BU outdrew them at the gate. Especially after they get upset with NESN for deciding to broadcast the BU game, what with all the empty red seats in Agganis.

Didn't know that, but that's hilarious! And pathetic.

And mookie, I'm sure if we could actually get some fans in the building more than twice a season (Harvard and Cornell are our only good draws, and Cornell only because 500 Big Red fans invade the place), they would never let kids in for free. I agree it's a nice offer, but the motive probably is not hospitality.

Some fans don't like the prospect of going 2 or 3 nights in a row -- at least not in a lot of places. The 2-of-3 isn't a particularly attractive set up for a lot of people except die-hard fans.

Re: Hockey East Playoff Attendance

All conferences should go to single elimination q-finals.

That is absolutely never going to happen again. There's too much riding on the marquee teams being at the Garden, Joe Louis, etc. for them to risk having a couple of bottom feeders screw up the attendance.
